Notes: Summary A study has been made of the cerebral blood flow (CBF) in moyamoya disease from the perspective of hemispheric cerebral blood flow and regional CBF (rCBF). The material includes 21 children between the ages of 5 and 15 years with moyamoya disease, and 19 adult moyamoya cases-all of which had virtually no neurological symptoms at the time of the study. CBF was measured using the133Xe intravenous injection method. Comparsion was made with the measurements from 16 normal children and 14 normal adults. Study was also made of the relationship between the angiographic stage of the disease and the CBF. With the exception of the more elderly patients, CBF was found to be significantly lower in the moyamoya cases than in normal subjects of the same age group. In all age groups, the distribution of rCBF showed a dominant posterior distribution, dissimilar to the dominant anterior distribution found in the normals. Among the juvenile moyamoya cases, there was a tendency toward decreasing hemispheric blood flow together with advancing disease-as determined angiographically. Moreover, with advancing stages of the disease, there was a continuing transition from the normal pattern of frontal dominance to one of occipital dominance. This dominance of posterior rCBF is thought to be a characteristic feature of moyamoya disease.

Notes: Summary For vascular reconstruction in cases of atherosclerotic stenosis at the origin of the vertebral artery, we use vertebral to subclavian artery transposition. We discuss the advantages and effectiveness of such treatment based on a study of 32 cases. We have experienced neither surgical mortality nor morbidity and the outcome at the time of discharge has been favourable. Follow-up revealed no deaths, however, three cases exhibited symptoms of cerebral ischaemia. One had a supratentorial completed stroke, and the other two hat TIA or RIND, but without any notable lesion in the angiograms. There were no cases of cerebral infarction of the posterior fossa. We believe that this method should be the first choice for treatment of cases without lesions of the subclavian artery for the following reasons: serious operative complications have not been encountered, surgical invasion is minimal, temporary occlusion of the common carotid artery is unnecessary, the operation can be done by occluding only the vertebral artery, and unlike various bypass operations, anastomosis is required at only one location and is consequently technically uncomplicated. Following anastomosis the cerebral blood pathway is physiological.

Notes: Summary The effectiveness of acute stage vascular reconstruction in cases of progressing stroke is reported. The clinical material consists of 28 cases of progressing stroke in the anterior circulation upon which vascular reconstruction was performed. Following admission, brain protective substances (500 ml mannitol, 500 mg vitamin E, 500 mg phenytoin) and dextran, were administered to the patients, and induced hypertension was also performed. Changes in symptoms were then observed and vascular reconstruction was carried out in cases where symptoms progressed. The vascular lesion was on the internal carotid artery in 8 cases and on the middle cerebral artery in 20 cases. Complete disappearance of neurological symptoms was obtained in 12 cases, whereas only mild neurological symptoms remained but a return to normal social life was possible in 11 other cases. Symptoms remained in three cases and there were two fatalities. In a long-term follow-up study, there were no cases of aggravation of symptoms due to ischaemic stroke. Moreover, the reconstruction was judged as effective on the basis of cerebral blood flow and metabolism. We concluded that acute vascular reconstruction for progressing stroke under the administration of brain protective substances is effective in preventing the progression of neurological symptoms.

Notes: Summary This report describes our retrospective evaluation of CT features of the acute phase in 34 cases of ruptured cerebral aneurysms of the posterior cranial fossa. The results are as follows. 1. Examination of cisternal haematoma distribution revealed that SAH had extended to the supra- and infratentorial cisterns in 28 cases (82%). There were only 6 cases (18%) in which SAH was confined to the posterior cranial fossa only but even when there was subarachnoid haematoma in both the supra- and infratentorial cisterns, thick haematomas were seen at the periphery of the brain stem. In cases of vertebral artery-posterior inferior cerebellar artery aneurysms (VA-PICA AN), haematomas in the ambient cistern were thicker on the aneurysm side. In addition, in cases of basilar arterybifurcation (BA-Bifurcation AN) and basilar artery-superior cerebelli artery aneurysms (BA-SCA AN), there were many thick, highdensity haematomas in the interpeduncular cistern. 2. The rate of intracerebral haemorrhage was extremely low (1 patient). 3. The rate of intraventricular haemorrhage was high, and these haemorrhages demonstrated a reflux pattern. 4. The rate of hydrocephalus was high (76.5%) in comparison with that noted in association with SAH due to the rupture of anterior circulation aneurysms.

Notes: The thermal structure of the Sambagawa belt, which is reflected by minerals produced during the highest temperature of metamorphism, generally is characterized by the occurrence of the highest grade schists in the middle of the structural pile. The origin of this structure has been analysed in the upper horizon of the Sambagawa schist sequence in Central Shikoku as an example for the structure of the whole belt. The upper horizon of the Sambagawa schist sequence in Central Shikoku consists of three nappes, the Saruta nappe II, the Saruta nappe I and the Fuyunose nappe in descending order of structural level. The Saruta nappe II shows a downward increase of metamorphic grade from the garnet zone, through the albite-biotite zone, to the oligoclase-biotite zone. The Saruta nappe I consists mainly of rocks in the albite-biotite zone and partly in the oligoclase-biotite zone, but the direction of the increase of metamorphic grade is not clear. The Fuyunose nappe shows an upward increase in metamorphic grade which changes from the glaucophane zone to the barroisite zone. It is concluded that the Saruta nappe II and Saruta nappe I were overturned and then mechanically coupled with the Fuyunose nappe. The Sambagawa metamorphic field, which is of the highest temperature phase of metamorphism, appears to have had an inverted thermal gradient and a thermal structure comparable with that expected in the deeper parts of a subduction complex.

Notes: Magneto-optical properties of Ba-ferrite particulate media were investigated. Faraday rotation and reflectivity were measured for different thicknesses of the magnetic layer, and compared with the predictions of a simple analytical model. The magneto-optical output of the media measured using a laser showed a maximum at a particular thickness. The dependence of the magneto-optical output on thickness is explained on the basis of equations approximating the Faraday rotation and the reflectivity. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An x-ray spectrometer has been designed and constructed for Compton scattering measurements using 40–70 keV x-rays from an ellipsoid multipole wiggler (EMPW) installed in the accumulation ring of the National Laboratory for High Energy Physics at Tsukuba. The spectrometer has four sets of a Cauchois-type energy analyzer and an imaging plate, which are arranged on the surface of a cone and share a scattering angle of 160°. In each energy-analyzing system, to increase signal to noise ratio a set of vertical and horizontal slits are inserted between the analyzer and the imaging plate. A resolution of 0.13 a.u. in terms of electron momentum was achieved. A Compton profile of a vanadium single crystal was measured with an integrated counting rate of 400 counts/s.

Notes: CeO2 layers epitaxially grown on (100) silicon substrates by electron-beam evaporation were investigated and proved to have (110) orientation. X-ray diffraction measurements showed the CeO2 layers consist of more than 98% volume fraction of the (110) component. Cross-sectional high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected-area electron diffraction clearly verified the above configuration of crystallographic orientations and that the 〈100〉 direction in the CeO2(110) plane is parallel with the 〈110〉 direction in the Si(100) plane. The cross-sectional lattice image clarified the existence of a ∼60-A(ring)-thick intermediate amorphous layer between the CeO2 layer and the silicon substrate. Moreover, the high density of defects such as dislocations and low-angle boundaries that exist in the vicinity of the interface agree well with Rutherford backscattering and channeling measurements.

Notes: Abstract Time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) spectra of the quasicrystalline phase Al79Mn20Si1 (800 ppm Hf) and the decagonal phase (T-Phase) Al80Mn20 (800 ppm Hf) were measured using the181Hf probe. It is obtained that the structure around the center in Mackay icosahedra in the decagonal phase seems to be distorted in comparison with that in the quasicrystalline phase.
