Notes: Abstract The glass-forming ability (GFA) of the Ni-B-Sn ternary system has been analysed. The addition of small quantities of tin increases the GFA with relation to the Ni-B binary system. Glass formation was observed in the nickel-rich corner of the Ni-B-Sn ternary system for a tin content 〈15 at %. The difficulty of formation of a ternary compound Ni21 B6Sn2 (τ-phase) seems to play an important role in the GFA.

Notes: Abstract Invariant three- and four-phase equilibria in the magnesium-rich corner of the Mg-Cu-Sn ternary system have been studied by differential thermal analysis, optical microscopy, electron probe microanalysis and X-ray diffraction. The L⇋(Mg) + Mg2 Cu + Mg2Sn ternary eutectic reaction was found to be at 467 °C and at Mg−13.5 at % Cu−4.4 at% Sn. The L⇋Mg2Cu + Mg2Sn pseudo-binary eutectic reaction is tentatively located at 522°C and at Mg−26.0 at % Cu−7.7 at % Sn.

Notes: Abstract NiB is a system which glass formation from melt occurs readily in two composition ranges. With the purpose of analyzing the influence of Sn in the glass forming ability of the ternary alloy, Sn was added to NiB. Ni x B y Sn z samples were obtained by rapid quenching from the melt with the melt spinning technique. The glass formation was checked by X-ray diffraction and the Sn environment was studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy.

Notes: Abstract Tin exhibits different oxidation kinetics which are composition dependent, when it forms intermetallic compounds with the chalcogenides S and Se. This phenomenon is related to the layer compounds SnS2 and SnSe2 crystalline structure. These minerals have anisotropic bonding characteristics, due to Van der Waals bonds presence between chalcogenides adjoining planes. The mentioned weak bonds allow the oxygen diffusion to the bulk, favouring the reaction with the inner tin atoms. In this work we study samples of Sn−S alloy with different thermal treatment by XRD and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Results are discussed and compared with those obtained for Sn−Se alloy in an early work [1].

Notes: Abstract Young's modulus was measured in rapidly quenched ribbons of Fe44Ni38B18 annealed at a rate of 5 K/min up to different temperatures. An oscillating behavior was observed. Samples annealed up to temperatures that correspond to maxima and minima values of Young's modulus were studied with Mössbauer spectroscopy in order to correlate the macroscopic parameter with the hyperfine field distribution.

Notes: Abstract Melt quenched FeBSn samples of different compositions were prepared with three different quenching rates and analyzed by Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. In a previous work, the glass-forming tendency in this system was analyzed, In the present work, the short-range order is studied and an improvement in the determination of the glass-forming composition range is achieved. Mössbauer spectra were fit using hyperfine field distributions.

Notes: Abstract A new phase was observed in the MgNiSn system by metallographic examination, X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Quantitative analysis with electron probe micro-analysis showed that its composition was Mg75Ni15Sn10. The solubility of Sn in Mg2Ni was also determined.

Notes: Abstract Young's modulus of Fe44Ni38Bi18 amorphous ribbons annealed at different temperatures shows an oscillating behavior depending on the annealing temperature. In a previous work, several samples were studied and the Young modulus was correlated with the hyperfine field distributions. In this work, more samples are analyzed and further Mössbauer studies are performed in order to verify the above-mentioned correlation.
