Notes: Abstract Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by xerostomia. Although a common observation in SS is increased susceptibility to caries, the level of periodontal disease has not been described in these individuals. The purpose of this study was to determine the periodontal status of 14 SS female subjects who had a mean age of 52.9±11.6 years. Plaque, gingival, and calculus indices as well as probing depth (PD) and attachment level (AL) were determined on 7 index teeth in each subject. Result indicated that individuals with Sjögren's Syndrome did not exhibit significant periodontal disease.

Notes: Abstract It was found that trace amount of various ions could be effectively adsorbed onto hydrous magnesium oxide from aqueous solution. Attempts were made to investigate the feasibility of using hydrous magnesium oxide as preconcentration agent for neutron activation analysis (NAA). The procedure was successfully applied for the measurements of trace amounts of elements in the surface water of a number of large rivers which play very important roles in the lives of local people. Some of them are polluted rather badly. In order to improve the living standards it is rather important to establish reliable analytical methods so that more effective surveillance may be enforced on pollution control problems. NAA is generally accepted as one of the most suitable methods for simultaneous and multielemental determination of trace amounts of elements. In this work polluted surface waters were investigated by NAA using Tsing Hua Open-pool Reactor (THOR).

Notes: Abstract Distributed dynamic identification and vibration control of high-performance flexible structures has drawn much attention in recent years. This article presents an analytical and finite-element study on a distributed piezoelectric sensor and distributed actuator coupled with flexible shells and plates. The integrated piezoelectric sensor/actuator can monitor the oscillation as well as actively control the structural vibration by the direct/converse piezoelectric effects, respectively. Based on Maxwell's equations and Love's assumptions, new theories on distributed sensing and active vibration control of a generic shell using the distributed piezoelectrics are derived. These theories can be easily simplified to account for plates, cylinders, beams, etc. A new piezoelectric finite element is also formulated using the variational principle and Hamilton's principle. A piezoelectric micropositioning device was first studied; analytical solutions are compared closely with experimental and finite-element results. Distributed vibration identification and control of a zero-curvature shell-a plate-are also investigated.

Notes: Abstract The human papillomavirus was detected in cervicovaginal cells by the polymerase chain reaction in 14 of 37 (37.8 %) patients attending a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic and in 6 of 43 healthy young women (14.0 %) undergoing routine gynecologic examinations who served as controls. The results indicated that even the more malignant types of human papillomaviruses were not uncommon among the control group, and that the prevalence of human papillomavirus infection was significantly higher in STD clinic patients than in the control group. These findings confirm the suggestion that factors other than human papillomavirus infections may be involved in the pathogenesis of cervical cancer.

Notes: Abstract Electrons suspended in a Penning trap were transported more than 5000 km, all the way across the continental United States. The magnetic field was provided by a persistent superconducting solenoid at 4.7 T which was not connected to any source of power during travel. The electric field was produced using ordinary 9 V batteries. A good vacuum, expected to be sufficient to keep antiprotons stored indefinitely, was maintained within the trap by keeping it at 4 K. Portable traps are of interest for experiments which require small numbers of antiprotons for precise studies, for acceleration to energies not available at the LEAR antiproton source, for experiments with large immovable detectors, and for possible medical applications. The portable apparatus is so similar to that used to contain low energy antiprotons, that the trip demonstrates the feasibility of transporting cold antiprotons over large distances in portable traps.

Notes: Abstract The possibility to produce, trap and study antihydrogen atoms rests upon the recent availability of extremely cold antiprotons in a Penning trap. Over the last five years, our TRAP Collaboration has slowed, cooled and stored antiprotons at energies 1010 lower than was previously possible. The storage time exceeds 3.4 months despite the extremely low energy, which corresponds to 4.2 K in temperature units. The first example of measurements which become possible with extremely cold antiprotons is a comparison of the antiproton inertial masses which shows they are the same to a fractional accuracy of 4×10−8. (This is 1000 times more accurate than previous comparisons and large additional increases in accuracy are anticipated.) To increase the number of trapped antiprotons available for antihydrogen production, we have demonstrated that we can accumulate or “stack” antiprotons cooled from successive pulsed injections into our trap.

Notes: The use of multiobjective optimization techniques, which may be regarded as a systematic sensitivity analysis, for the selection and modification of system parameters is presented. A minimax multiobjective optimization model for structural optimization is proposed. Three typical multiobjective optimization techniques - goal programming, compromise programming and the surrogate worth trade-off method - are used to solve such a problem. The application of multiobjective optimization techniques to the selection of system parameters and large scale structural design optimization problems is the main purpose of this paper.
