    Notizen: A cross-sectional study on 353 routine office workers was performed in order to investigate relationships between skin diseases, signs or reported symptoms and work at visual display terminals. Skin diseases and signs were ascertained by dermatological examination. Skin symptoms as well as details of VDT work and other work conditions were obtained from a questionnaire. Measurements of the physical environment were made at each work place. The results were subjected to a multivariate analysis, There was a tendency for increased occurrence of seborrhoeic eczema, nonspecific erythema and symptoms among VDT compared to non-VDT users. Organizational conditions during VDT work, such as a perceived high work pace or work load, and inability to take rest breaks, were found to be associated with reported skin symptoms and nonspecific erythema. A low relative humidity was associated with a diagnosis of seborrhoeic eczema. No associations were found in this study between current field levels of electric or magnetic fields and skin diseases, signs or reported symptoms.

    Notizen: The rabbit has been used for decades for predictive testing of skin irritancy, but in recent years, the guinea pig has been suggested as an alternative, especially for assessment of one of the components of the irritant reaction: edema (fluid accumulation). A method based on skin-fold measurements with Harpenden calipers has been developed and modified. In previous papers, experience with sodium lauryl sulphate, nonanoic acid and industrial solvents was reported. The present results concern the use of cutting fluids, buffered and unbuffered acid and alkaline solutions, formalin and dimethyl sulfoxide. This inexpensive and comparatively unsophisticated method afforded clear dose-response relationships and good discriminating power. The only exception was the acid and alkaline solutions, where no changes in skin-fold thickness were observed despite their documented irritant potential. The appearance of erythema (visual scoring) and the increase in skin-fold thickness, and their relationship, are discussed with some illustrative examples. The method described is now well standardized and is suited for predictive testing of the edema-inducing capacity of chemicals and products.

    Notizen: The aim was to mimic the repeated open application test (ROAT) procedure, well established in humans, in an animal model. Guinea pigs were induced with cobalt chloride (CoCl2). They were then challenged by repeated open application (4 sites/animal) of various concentrations of the allergen in 10% DMSO 1 × a day for 7 days, to study dose dependency, morphology of test reactions and time course. The reactivity at the test sites to repeated open application was dose-and time-dependent. There was good agreement between the results of the treatments with CoCl2 and the post-treatment patch test results. Among 26 of the 29 animals, such agreement was found when 10% DMSO was used as vehicle. However, some reactivity was also observed in pretests at sites exposed to petrolatum. We suspect that this may be due to contamination and/or irritancy of the vehicle.

    Notizen: Steel surfaces can be treated with zinc and chromates to prevent the steel from rusting. Cases of allergic contact dermatitis due to the release of hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) from chromated surfaces have been reported. The main purpose of the present study was to develop a simple procedure for the determination of leachable Cr6+ that could be used in industrial applications to check the quality of chromated products and to establish a “threshold limit value” for such products. Occlusive tests were performed in chromate-sensitive patients using chromated discs, and discs representing a release of 0.6 μg/cm2 or more elicited positive results in all patients tested. It was proposed that the mean release of Cr6+ from chromated parts should not exceed 0.3 μ/cm2. Approximately 1 out of 4 yellow chromated parts, collected from a chromating plant and a car assembly plant, gave values above this limit. Today, several tests are performed to evaluate the technical quality of the chromate layers. It is suggested that the present method should be added to the test program in order to reduce the risk of causing chromate allergy.
