Notes: Measurements are reported of the second-harmonic distortion in 1.3-μm InGaAsP distributed feedback lasers operating at different temperatures. A minimum of the second-harmonic distortion exists at a particular bias current when the laser is operating at low temperature (10 °C). The minimum shifts to a higher bias current when the operating temperature is raised. At an even higher temperature, the minimum dissappears. A temperature-dependent model of the second-harmonic distortion, based on an equivalent circuit analysis, is presented to explain the experimental results.

Notes: A working p-type Si metal semiconductor field-effect transistor structure, utilizing a boron delta-doped layer as the conducting channel, has been successfully fabricated. Based on Hall measurements, a hole mobility of 120 (180) cm2 V−1 s−1 at 300 (77) K has been obtained. The sheet carrier density of the delta layer was estimated to be about 1.8×1012 cm−2. It is shown that the delta field-effect transistor exhibits an extrinsic transconductance of 640 μS/mm for a gate length of 5 μm, and a high gate to drain breakdown voltage ((approximately-greater-than)18 V). By reducing the gate length to 1 μm, a transconductance of up to 3.2 mS/mm is expected.

Notes: Very low threshold (Ith∼1 mA) lasers emitting near 1.3 μm have been fabricated using multiquantum-well active region, short cavity length, and high reflectivity facet coatings. A laser-array transmitter utilizing these lasers can be operated without prebias and has negligible timing skew for 1 Gb/s operation. No crosstalk is observed when adjacent elements of the laser array are modulated.

Notes: The addition of ZrO2 is found to be very effective as the nucleation sites to promote the oriented growth of Y1Ba2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) during peritectic solidification. Extended regions of well- textured YBCO grains with superior superconducting properties of the YBCO bulk are readily obtained by a single-step melt process at much lower process temperatures. At 77 K, the platelike Josephson weak-link behaviors observed in pure melt-processed YBCO have been effectively eliminated, indicating that the coherency between the spherulitic superconducting YBCO grains may have been greatly improved by ZrO2 additions.

Notes: A photoreceiver circuit using an InGaAs p-i-n photodiode and InGaAs/InAlAs pseudomorphic modulation-doped field effect transistor (MODFET) based preamplifier has been fabricated. The 18 μm diam photodiode has a bandwidth of 29 GHz and the ft and fmax of the MODFET are 26 and 30 GHz, respectively. The photoreceiver circuits have bandwidths of 10 GHz and 17 dB gain. The sensitivity at 2.5 Gb/s is −26.4 dBm.

Notes: Abstract— The tensile failure mechanisms and the effects of manufacture flaws on the tensile behavior of an unidirectional composite (E-glass fiber/epoxy matrix) were investigated. Macroscopic failure processes were determined by an enhanced X-ray radiography technique and microstructural changes analysed by both optical and scanning electron microscopy. An axisymmetric finite element model was developed for analysing the microstress distributions in the composite containing broken fibers in order to determine the effect of local fiber volume fraction on the local failure process. Finally, the measurement of the volume fraction distribution of fiber misalignment was carried out and a simple analytical model was proposed to interpret the fiber misalignment effect. A correlation between the fiber misalignment distribution in the specimens and their tensile strengths was obtained statistically.

Notes: Abstract In a retrospective study involving 25 patients with occult sepsis in the ICU of Taichung Veterans General Hospital, the sensitivity and specificity of the new diagnostic method, Tc-99m HMPAO labelled white blood cells (WBCs) scan, were compared with other evaluating methods including clinical information, radiograph, ultrasound, bacterial culture, operative findings and pathological report. It was found that Tc-99m HMPAO labelled WBCs scans gave a sensitivity of 96.0%, a specificity of 84.4% and an overall accuracy of 87.3%, as well as the probable causes of false positive and false negative diagnoses were discussed. In conclusion, Tc-99m HMPAO labelled WBCs scans provide a reliable method for imaging of occult sepsis in the ICU.

Notes: Abstract Forty-one children (15 girls, 26 boys; ages 3.0±2.1 years) with Kawasaki disease (KD) were included in our study. The diameters of a total of 82 coronary arteries (CA), comprising 41 left (LCA) and 41 right (RCA), were computed by two-dimensional echocardiography (2D-Echo). If the diameter of the CA was≥20 mm, it was considered as dilated. The severity of the carditis was evaluated by [99mTc] HMPAO-labeled white blood cell (WBC) heart scans (Tc-WBC) carried out in all cases. On the basis of the results the children were divided into three groups. Group A children had the most severe carditis where the heart uptake was greater than the bone uptake; 11 of 32 (34.3%) of the CA in 16 cases were dilated. Group B had carditis of medium severity where the heart uptake was equal to the bone uptake; 11 of 28 (39.3%) of the CA in 14 cases were dilated. Group C had mild carditis where the heart uptake was less than the bone uptake; 9 of 22 (40.9%) of the CA in 11 cases were dilated. There were no significant differences among the three groups (p=0.87 by a chi-squared test). We conclude that no definite relationship exists between the severity of carditis and the dilatation of the CA in children with KD.

Notes: Abstract Camellia leaves were most effective for recoveringPhytophthora cinnamomi from soils followed by azalea leaves and cedar needles. A total of 131 isolates ofP. cinnamomi was obtained from soils and roots collected in Shanghai. Among them 125 were A1 and 6 were A2 type. There was little variation in morphological and physiological characteristics among 82 isolates tested. It is suggested that the fungus may have been a recent settler in Shanghai.

Notes: Abstract A method for finding the ground state of a many-body system, which is consistent with the truncation scheme used in the time-dependent density-matrix formalism of Wang and Cassing, is presented and applied to the Lipkin model. It is found that the method gives better ground states than the Hartree-Fock approximation. However, they significantly differ from the exact ground states.
