Notes: Summary We studied thrombin-induced metabolism of phosphoinositide, protein phosphorylation and platelet aggregation in platelets from 32 NIDDM patients and 12 control subjects. To clarify the effect of diet, sulphonylureas, or insulin treatment, the subjects were divided into three groups based on the type of treatment. Thrombin-induced platelet aggregation was measured with an aggregometer. Low-dose thrombin (0.25 U/ml)-stimulated platelet aggregation in diabetic patients was significantly increased compared with the control subjects. Platelet aggregation in the sulphonylurea and insulin groups was significantly lower than in the diet group. On the other hand, in platelets incubated with [32P]orthophosphate, thrombin-induced incorporation of 32P radioactivity into phosphatidic acid (PA) was significantly lower in the sulphonylurea and insulin groups than in the diet group. Thrombin-induced incorporation of [32P] radioactivity into phosphatidylinositol (PIP) for 10 s was significantly higher in the sulphonylurea group than in the diet group. There were no differences in thrombin-induced 47 kDa protein phosphorylation between platelets from the diet, sulphonylurea, or insulin groups. These results suggest that sulphonylureas and insulin induce suppression of thrombin-induced activation of phospholipase C, which mediates hydrolysis of PIP and PIP2 and production of PA, which leads to inhibition of platelet aggregation.

Notes: Abstract We have found that single neuronal activities in different regions in the brain commonly exhibit the distinct dynamics transition during sleep-waking cycle in cats. Especially, power spectral densities of single neuronal activities change their profiles from the white to the 1/f along with sleep cycle from slow wave sleep (SWS) to paradoxical sleep (PS). Each region has different neural network structure and physiological function. This suggests a globally working mechanism may be underlying the dynamics transition we concern. Pharmacological studies have shown that a change in a wide-spread serotonergic input to these regions possibly causes the neuronal dynamics transition during sleep cycle. In this paper, based on these experimental results, an asynchronous and symmetry neural network model including inhibitory input, which represents the role of the serotonergic system, is utilized to examine the reality of our idea that the inhibitory input level varying during sleep cycle induce that transition. Simulation results show that the globally applied inhibitory input can control the dynamics of single neuronal state evolution in the artificial neural network: 1/f-like power spectral density profiles result under weak inhibition, which possibly corresponds to PS, and white profiles under strong inhibition, which possibly corresponds to SWS. An asynchronous neural network is known to change its state according to its energy function. The geometrical structure of network energy function is thought to vary along with the change in inhibitory level, which is expected to cause the dynamics transition of neuronal state evolution in the network model. These simulation results support the possibility that the serotonergic system is essential for the dynamics transition of single neuronal activities during sleep cycle.

Notes: Abstract Recently, 1/f fluctuations have been discovered in the single-unit activity of mesencephalic reticular formation (MRF) neurons during REM sleep. In a previous paper, such behavior could satisfyingly be interpreted on the basis of the clustering Poisson process. The question of applicability of this model to other MRF neurons remained unanswered. The present paper reports on 1/f fluctuations in 12 MRF neurons all of which can satisfyingly be modeled by the clustering Poisson process.

Notes: Abstract The mesencephalic reticular formation (MRF) neurons are regarded as contributing to the activation of the celebral cortex. In this paper, the statistical features of single neuronal activities in MRF of cat during dream sleep are investigated; the neuronal spike train exhibits 1/f fluctuations. Counting statistics is applied to the neuronal spike train giving rise to a variance/mean curve which follows at μ-law. For an interpretation of these findings, the clustering Poisson process is applied which not only gives rise to at μ-law but also suggests a generation mechanism. The MRF neuronal activities are closely fitted by the clustering Poisson process and the underlying statistical parameters can be estimated. These findings strongly suggest that neuronal activities can be interpreted as superposition of randomly occuring clusters ( = bursts of spikes).

Notes: Abstract We describe an 11-year-old girl who initially had mild hepatosplenomegaly and then presented with abnormal expansion of CD3-negative granular lymphocytes in peripheral blood and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genome in the DNA obtained from the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNC). After approximately 3 years, she developed oedema, ascites, marked hepatosplenomegaly, and pancytopenia, and showed both a profile of anti-EBV antibodies of reactivated infection and a high titre of anti-cytomegalovirus antibody. Although she was treated with antibiotics, ganciclovir, and prednisolone, she died of hepatic failure. Conclusion Careful clinical observation, periodic examination of anti-EBV antibodies, and the analysis of EBV genome from PBMNC are needed in young patients with CD3-negative lymphoproliferative disease of granular lymphocytes.

Notes: Summary A new small, flexible fiberoptic ventriculoscope for the accurate positioning of a ventricular catheter tip has been developed. The technique for ventriculoscope-guided ventriculoperitoneal shunt and shunt revision is described. The ventricular catheter can easily be positioned away from the choroid plexus. Choroid plexus adhering to the shunt tube can be coagulated during shunt revision. This procedure can thus prevent an obstruction of the ventricular catheter by an adherent choroid plexus.

Notes: We investigated the resonant magneto-optic spectra of the electronic band A 2Σ+–X 2Πi of the OH radical. The theoretical analysis was made under the condition that OH radicals were subjected to an externally applied magnetic field, which was oriented in a direction longitudinal (the Faraday configuration) or transverse (the Voigt configuration) to the optical path. Light interacting with the OH radicals was assumed to be elliptically polarized. The polarization change caused by the magnetically induced optical anisotropy of the OH radical was calculated as a function of the frequency and the ellipticity of the incident light, the orientation of the polarization analyzer, and the number density of the OH radicals. Experiments were carried out in the Voigt configuration using a narrow-band tunable dye laser as a light source. The observed profiles of the Voigt-effect signal for the rotational lines of the various branches agreed with theoretical predictions.
