Notes: Design and fabrication of the R 6501 microprocessor-based photon correlator, equally applicable to Gaussian as well as non-Gaussian radiation, is described. It works on the principle of directly registering the arrival times of photoelectrons.

Notes: We report here the first clear demonstration of intensity-dependent phase shift due to electronic nonlinearity in a nonlinear polymer waveguide in which propagation distances over 5 cm have been achieved with total attenuation of ∼1.2 cm−1 . Intensity-dependent coupling angle, intensity-dependent coupling efficiency, and limiter action behavior have been observed in the polyamic acid waveguide using grating excitation with 400 fs, 80 ps, and 10 ns pulses. A nonlinear grating coupler analysis identifies the subpicosecond and picosecond processes with electronic nonlinearity, but the dominant effect in the nanosecond experiment is due to thermal nonlinearity derived from weak absorptions. The magnitude and sign of n2 of electronic nonlinearity are measured.

Notes: Soaking pigeon pea seeds in 6% sodium bicarbonate solution for 1 h, followed by oven-drying to 10% moisture improved dehusking efficiency from 66% in untreated seeds, or 71% in water-soaked seeds similarly dried, to 94% yield of dhal. Treatment reduced gum and pectin content, increased enzyme activity, but caused losses in protein and starch content of the dhal.

Notes: Leaf crinkle symptoms, stem necrosis and stunting were observed in Solanum capsicastrum plants in India. A virus was isolated from these plants and identified as a strain of eggplant mottled crinkle virus based on host reactions, in vitro properties, icosahedral particle morphology, buoyant density (1.39 g cm3), molecular weight (41 ± 0.5 kDa) of coat protein subunits and serological relationships

Notes: The management of public affairs in northeast India has been in focus in the regional, national and world press in recent years. Much of the attention has been confined to insurgency, the ‘foreign nationals’ issue, tribal ‘uprisings’, ‘brutalities’ committed by the security forces, ‘involvement’ of foreign agencies in the area, political ‘horse-trading’ and floods. There has been no analysis of the economic, cultural and demographic factors which have acquired different nuances in the wake of the rapid modernization taking place in the region since the 1950s and which have a decisive say on the formulation of policies and the efficacy of institutions of governance in northeast India. This paper proposes to offer some facts and reflections on these aspects.

Notes: Kinetics of liquid water sorption by soybean (Glycine max) and pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) seeds was studied at several temperatures. The data could be accurately correlated in terms of an empirical model involving a single rate constant. The temperature dependence of the rate constant followed Arrhenius relation. Swelling of grains due to water sorption was slightly less than the volume of water imbibed. This loss related to the energy of activation of the water sorption process.

Notes: Abstract In this paper certain theorems of theoretical interest have been established with the help of the geometrical properties of Maxwellian surface (which is spanned by the flow and field lines). These theorems shed light on the behaviour of steady incompressible hydromagnetic flows. The complex-lamellar acceleration and simple geodesic motion admitted by such flows have also been studied.

Notes: Abstract It is proved that the only circulation preserving magnetogeostrophic flows whose current density is lamellar, and bears a constant on a current density vector have (1) a plane motion of constant current density (on which certain unsteady potential motions may be superposed) and (2) a particular circular helical motion.

Notes: Abstract Synthetic cubic boron nitride (CBN) compacts are an important tool material used extensively for the machining of hardened steels. The paper describes work on the synthesis and characterization of CBN compacts. A 200 tonne cubic press has been used for the generation of high pressures. Solid solutions of TiN and TiC have been used as the binder material. The CBN powder and the binder are homogenously mixed and the mixed powder is pressed in a steel die under a pressure of about 3 kbars (300 M Pa). The pellets so formed are the starting material for synthesizing the compacts. Compacts both with and without a tungsten carbide substrate have been synthesized. The best compacts are formed at 58kbar (5.8 G Pa) and 1450° C. The sintered compacts after grinding and polishing are characterized by using powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Knoop hardness measurements made on the best CBN compacts give a hardness of 3400HK 0.5.
