Notes: Disabilities of the articulations of the head and cervical spine can often be detected only by exact measurement of functional radiographs. From two radiographs, one in flexion and one in extension, not only can the total mobility of the head be measured, but also the mobility of the individual articulations can be evaluated by taking exact measurements of the position of each vertebra. A method for semi-automatic measuring of such pairs of radiographs is presented. Edges and structures of the bones that are clearly visible in both radiographs are digitized on a graphics tablet. Then, by computer program, each vertebra of the first radiograph is shifted and rotated until it fits best to the respective vertebra of the second radiograph. Thus, for each articulation, the mobility angle and the location of the mobility axis relative to the adjacent vertebra, can be computed. First experiences with this method are presented.

Notes: Summary Recombinant phage which encode the entire precursor polypeptide for subunit VI of the photosystem I reaction center have been selected from a lambda gt11 cDNA expression library made from polyadenylated RNA of spinach seedlings. The sequence predicts a precursor polypeptide of 144 amino acids (Mr = 15.3 kDa), a mature protein of 95 residues (Mr = 10.4 kDa) that lacks methionine, histidine and cysteine, and a transit peptide of 49 residues (Mr = 4.9 kDa). The corresponding gene(s) is (are) designated psaH. The gene for subunit VII, psaC, has been located in the small single-copy region of the spinach plastid chromosome using a synthetic oligonucleotide and a heterologous hybridization probe. It is part of a polycistronic transcription unit that is constitutively expressed and processed. Putative processing products include a monocistronic RNA for psaC. The polypeptide chain of 81 (deduced) amino acids is highly conserved and strikingly resembles bacterial-type ferredoxins. It harbours cysteine residues that appear to be involved in the ligation of the two 4Fe4S centres A and B in photosystem I. None of the two subunits appears to be membrane-spanning, and subunit VI, as subunit VII, is located at the reducing (stromal) side of the reaction center. All available information on the major subunits of photosystem I from spinach has been combined into a (revised) topographic model. Evidence that the innermost — plastome-encoded — core of photosystem I represents an old bacterial heritage in present day chloroplasts is discussed.

Notes: Summary Three conservation laws, expressed in terms of line and surface integrals, are derived for Reissner's transverse shear theory of plates. Mindlin's and Kirchhoff's (or classical) theories are included as particular cases. A physical interpretation of three plate transformations used to obtain the conservation laws is proposed. The path-domain independence property of the integrals, their connection to energy release rates due to cavity motions and their relationships with stress intensity factors are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract Theβ −-decay of148,150,152Pr into levels of148,150,152Nd has been studied byγ-singles,γγ-coincidence and for148Pr also byγγ-angular correlation measurements. The praseodymium activities have been obtained by thermal neutron-induced fission of235U followed by on-line mass separation with the helium-jet coupled mass separator HELIOS. Decay schemes for these heaviest praseodymium nuclides are proposed. From the angular correlation measurements spin values for the seven lowest levels of148Nd are deduced. Spin and parity assignments for the lower levels in150,152Nd have been extrapolated from level systematics.

Notes: Abstract Laser photoionization has been used to detect trace amounts of plutonium. A high sensitivity and selectivity has been achieved by applying three-step excitation and ionization of the plutonium atoms with high pulse-repetition rates and additional mass determination by time-of-flight measurements. A laser system was developed which consists of a copper vapor laser pumping three dye lasers simultaneously. Samples containing between 1010 and 1012 atoms of239Pu on Re filaments were measured yielding strong resonance signals with maximum ion count rates of several kHz at a vanishingly low background. A detection efficiency of 10−7 was determined allowing the detection of about 108 plutonium atoms in a sample.

Notes: Summary A resonant ionization mass spectrometer has been developed as an analytical tool for the detection of trace elements, especially of plutonium and other radionuclides. The sample, deposited on a rhenium filament, is evaporated by electrical heating and the atoms of the element under investigation are selectively ionized by laser light delivered from three dye lasers pumped by a copper vapour laser. The resulting photoions are detected in a time-of-flight spectrometer with a channelplate detector. For plutonium a mass resolution of M/δM=1500 was obtained and an overall detection efficiency of 4×10−6 was determined for stepwise excitation and ionization via autoionizing states. With a laser light bandwidth of 3–5 GHz neighbouring isotopes could be suppressed by a factor of 20 due to isotope shifts in the excitation transitions. The isotope composition of synthetic samples was measured and good agreement was found with mass spectroscopic results. The influence of the hyperfine structure on the isotope ratios is discussed.

Notes: Summary The ad- and desorption of trace quantities of the lanthanide elements lanthanum, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, dysprosium, and ytterbium and of the actinide elements americium and curium were investigated by thermochromatographic and isothermal measurements with hot titanium columns. The adsorption enthalpies deduced from the experimental data are in reasonable agreement with calculated values which indicate considerable variations in volatility under such conditions. More volatile elements can quickly be separated from less volatile elements by heating the mixture on titanium in high vacuum.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A fast method for the separation of lanthanide elements by gas chromatography of their hexafluoroacetylacetonates is described. Individual lanthanides can be isolated within a few minutes, and the whole group can be separated in less than 10 min. The hexafluoroacetylacetonates are applied in form of mixed complexes with tri-n-butyl phosphate or trioctylphosphine oxide prepared by fast extraction into quasi-solid solvents. The applicability of this method for the separation of trivalent actinide elements is shown, including the fast preparation of thin counting samples.
