Notes: Development of salt-tolerant genotypes is central both to remediation of salinity-affected land and to meet increasing global food demand, which has been driving expansion of cropping into marginal areas. The bottleneck of any breeding programme is the lack of a reliable screening technique. This study tested the hypothesis that the ability of plants to retain K+ under saline conditions is central to their salt tolerance. Using seven barley cultivars contrasting in salt tolerance (CM72, Numar, ZUG293, ZUG95, Franklin, Gairdner, ZUG403), a comprehensive study was undertaken of whole-plant (growth rate, biomass, net CO2 assimilation, chlorophyll fluorescence, root and leaf elemental and water content) and cellular (net fluxes of H+, K+, Na+ and Ca2+) responses to various concentrations of NaCl (20–320 m m). Na+ selective microelectrodes were found to be unsuitable for screening purposes because of non-ideal selectivity of the commercially available Na+ LIX. At the same time, our results show very strong negative correlation between the magnitude of K+ efflux from the root and salt tolerance of a particular cultivar. K+ efflux from the mature root zone of intact 3-day-old seedlings following 40 min pretreatment with 80 m m NaCl was found to be a reliable screening indicator for salinity tolerance in barley. As a faster and more cost-effective alternative to microelectrode measurements, a procedure was developed enabling rapid screening of large numbers of seedlings, based on amount of K+ leaked from plant roots after exposure to NaCl.

Notes: Summary We prove in this paper that the bias of the Kaplan-Meier estimator functional, which always under-estimates the true value, is decreasing at an exponential rate. An application of the inequality is also given.

Notes: Abstract To date, the chromosomes of 210 species of fresh-water fishes have been studied in China. They are principally cyprinids. Based upon the karyotypic data so far obtained mainly by the authors' laboratory, a report is here submitted on the karyosystematics of Chinese cyprinid fishes. The primitive karyotype of cyprinid fishes may be inferred as being 2n=50. During phyletic evolution the cyprinid fishes probably have been differentiated into two large branches, one of which with the Leuciscinae as a basic group and another branch with the Barbinae as a basic group. As to the modes of their chromosome evolution, Robertsonian translocation seems to be prominent in the first branch, whereas polyploidization appears to be prominent in the second branch. Based on the chromosome studies in cyprinid fishes, some tentative ideas about the classification of the subfamilies in Cyprinidae are presented. A table containing the karyotypes of Chinese fresh-water fishes is attached.

Notes: Abstract Semi-empirical SCF-MO method — CNDO/2 is extended to transition element iron. The chemical adsorption energy of atom H and the desorption activation energy of molecule H2 on a iron grain surface are computed using a cluster model. The weak chemical adsorption energy of H and the desorption activation energy of H2 on a nickel grain surface are also calculated by assuming a configuration 3s23p63d10 for the Ni-atom in solid state. In a diffuse cloud, which is near a strong interstellar radiation field, according to the kinetic theory of chemical reactions, the formation rates of H2 on Fe and Ni grain surfaces are estimated. The functions of dielectric grains and Ni, Fe grains on the formation of interstellar H2 are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Geometrical optimization of trusses, i.e. optimization of the cross-sectional areas of the members and the coordinates of the joints, is solved by atwo-level approximation concept (TLAC). Displacements and element forces are approximated by first order Taylor series expansions in terms of generalized variables (or their reciprocal) which define the geometrical properties of the elements. This approximation leads to a high-qualityfirst level approximate problem (FA) which is solved by considering a sequence ofsecond level approximate problems (SA) in the design variable space. The method presented here represents a new approach to the solution of geometrical optimization problems. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the high efficiency of the proposed method.

Notes: Abstract Continuum-type optimality criteria for the iterative optimization of “large” finite element systems (i.e. systems with over ten thousand finite elements) are discussed. By investigating optimization problems with up to one million elements and one million variables, it is shown that for a single displacement constraint the proposed method results in a rapid and almost uniform convergence, the rate of which, even for relatively ill-conditioned problems, does not depend significantly on the number of elements. Additional refinements, including upper and lower limits on the cross-sectional dimensions, segmentation, allowance for selfweight and the cost of supports, non-linear and non-separable objective functions, inclusion of shear deformations, built-up cross-sections as well as additional stress constraints and two-dimensional (plane stress) problems, will be considered in Part II of this contribution. The current development constitutes an extension and generalization of pioneering work by Berke, Khot, Venkayya and their associates, whose methods are also reviewed herein. In addition to an elementary truss example and a more advanced beam example, some simple layout optimization problems are considered in this Part. A special feature of the paper is that all numerical results presented are confirmed by closed form analytical solutions.
