Notes: In most vertebrates, the β-oxidation of long-chain fatty acids is stimulated by the presence of l-carnitine, which allows long-chain acyl-CoA-esters to cross the mitochondrial membrane. A study was undertaken to investigate the possible effects of supplemental dietary l-carnitine on the growth, tissue lipid content and activity of hepatic acetyl coenzyme-A carboxylase (ACoAC) in the European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Four isoproteic (42% crude protein), isolipidic (19% crude fat) and isoenergetic (21.5 kJ g−1) diets were formulated to contain increasing levels of carnitine (0.3, 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 g kg−1). Triplicate groups of 25 seabass (mean body weight: 250 g) were grown in seawater (temperature: 20 °C; salinity: 35 ppt) over 85 days. At the end of the growth study, whole body, liver, viscera, gonads, muscle and plasma samples were withdrawn for analyses. Dietary l-carnitine supplementation did not significantly affect weight gain, feed efficiency or protein utilisation. At the end of the experimental period, the whole body composition of fish did not differ significantly between experimental treatments. Similarly, neither total plasma triacylglycerols and cholesterol levels nor tissue lipid content were affected by the dietary l-carnitine supplementation. By contrast, fish fed the l-carnitine supplemented diets showed a three-fold increase in the activity of ACoAC, suggesting higher rates of lipogenesis in seabass liver. The overall results show that supplemental dietary l-carnitine is not suitable for reducing fat deposition in seabass fed high-fat diets.

Notes: Abstract A progradational sedimentary body, the infralittoral prograding wedge (IPW), has been developing from the mean fair-weather wave-base level to the storm wave-base level between the onshore (beach) and the offshore (inner continental shelf) depositional zones along the Spanish coast during the Late Holocene. The main sedimentary body is composed of large inclined master beds which prograde seawards parallel to the shoreline, formed by sediments swept offshore by waves from shallow-water littoral environments. The inclined beds downlap onto finer-grained offshore sediments and, in turn, are overlain by shoreface deposits. The IPW is generated by downwelling storm currents and associated seaward transport of sediment. It represents a new depositional model for clastic wave-dominated coasts, and its identification requires a new subdivision of the nearshore environment.

Notes: Abstract Secondary diabetes following pancreatectomy in the dog was prevented by autotransplantation of pancreatic fragments in the spleen. The function and composition of the endocrine elements were analyzed by functional studies and by light and electron microscopy at 4, 8, and 24 weeks. During these different periods, splenectomy proved that all the animals were dependent on the transplanted tissue for normoglycemia. The morphologic study of the spleen showed the survival of the intrinsic pancreatic ganglia as well as the presence of an amyelinic, terminal nervous network, with adrenergic varicosities, exclusively related to the endocrine elements. Nerve endings were identified in close contact with beta, alpha-2, and alpha-1 cells, either isolated in the splenic pulp or forming insular structures with a variable size and composition. No cholinergic varicosities could be identified nor was there any innervation in the ductal and acinar tissue. From 4 weeks on, Schwann cells could be seen coating large surfaces of the endocrine cells at the same time as they sheathed nervous elements, thus creating true “neuroinsular complexes” with beta and alpha-2 cells. The few ganglia that could only be identified under light microscopy, as well as the ultrastructural characteristics of the innervation, suggest that the sympathetic fibers of the perivascular, trabecular and capsular plexus of the spleen had grown and invaded the inoculated endocrine tissue in the splenic pulp.

Notes: A comparative Raman band shape study of the reorientation of monosubstituted benzene molecules (C6H5X, X = CH3, CH2Cl, CHCl2, CCl3 and C≡CCH3) in the liquid phase has been performed. Reorientational correlation functions appear to be less sensitive to molecular reorientation about the major axis (Z axis) than to rotation of the axis itself, approaching a symmetric top case. Molecular motion anisotropy is found to increase in the order C6H5CH3 〈 C6H5CH2Cl 〈 C6H5CHCl2 〈 C6H5CCl3 〈 C6H5CCCH3 as the rotation about the Z axis becomes increasingly preferred. These results are in agreement with NMR spin-lattice relaxation data.As expected for liquids with imporatant intermolecular interactions, both the free rotor and Kubo's model fail to fit the experimental correlation functions.

Notes: Raman spectra of di-n-butylamine show bands whose temperature-dependent intensities clearly suggest the occurrence of different conformers in simultaneous equilibria. In particular, the Raman spectrum of the solid phase is compared with that of n-nonane in order to identify the more stable conformation. In addition, intensity rations vs temperature for pairs of Raman bands in the CH stretching region exhibit a smooth variation between the liquid and solid.
