Notes: The structure and vibrational modes of CO adsorbed on Cu(001) have been investigated by helium atom scattering (HAS). Below coverages of θ=0.13, CO adsorbs as isolated molecules, and the time of flight (TOF) spectra of helium atoms scattered from the surface are characterized by energy losses and gains of 3.94 ± 0.07 meV. With the aid of isotope shift measurements, this mode is unambiguously assigned to the frustrated translation mode of the adsorbed CO. In the c(2×2) structure (θ=0.5) this mode is found to show dispersion in both the 〈100〉 and 〈110〉 azimuths with frequencies ranging from 3.9 meV at the zone origin to 5.6 meV at the zone boundary. A simple force constant model with a single nearest neighbor force constant within the layer is found to be sufficient to describe the dispersion. For coverages slightly less than θ=0.5 the angular distributions of scattered helium atoms show features characteristic of vacancies in the overlayer. In the TOF spectra an additional nondispersive mode at about 4 meV is also seen and assigned to the frustrated translation of CO molecules adjacent to the vacancies in the c(2×2) overlayer. The Rayleigh mode is clearly observed in the c(2×2) structure but is found to decrease slightly in frequency while the longitudinal resonance, which is especially prominent on the clean surface, disappears completely. The results are interpreted with the aid of slab calculations. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: : A deterministic, separable, linear algorithm is presented for maximizing aggregate hydropower production. The method is iterative and amenable to solution using standard LP software. The utility of the technique is demonstrated using several test applications involving a hypothetical single-purpose hydropower reservoir and a monthly increment 20-year flow record from the Gunpowder River in Maryland. The separable linearized forms solved quickly using MPSX on a variety of IBM hardware: 3090-400 VF, 3084 QX, dual processor 4381-3, and an AT/370 personal computer. For comparison purposes, the original nonlinear nonseparable version of the model was also solved using MINOS. This yielded a value of aggregate hydropower marginally higher than that using MPSX. The separable, linearized methodology proved to be a useful and an efficient means of generating good starting points for MINOS. The use of these warm starts effected substantial reductions in MINOS execution times.

Notes: The eighteenth report of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution made no reference to any potential environmental impacts resulting from runoff pollution associated with transport activities. This paper identifies the magnitude and extent of pollution associated with discharges from various transport sources and identifies solids, metals, hydrocarbons, herbicides and de-icing agents as the principal contaminants of environmental concern. The impacts of these pollutants on the receiving water are reviewed. They are primarily associated with highways which have a high traffic density, and herbicides are considered to be the only potential and widespread hazard to groundwaters. Highway and airport runoff are shown to have both acute and chronic effects on biotic diversity and organism mortality rates, although these effects appear to be largely confined to reaches immediately downstream from the discharge outfalls.

Notes: Male Scyliorhinus canicula possess a longer and narrower mouth than females resulting in pronouced sexual dimorphism with respect to the mouth length/mouth width ratio (0.49 and 0.43, respectively). Significant sexual differences in the girth of the head and pre-oral, pre-branchial and head lengths were also recorded. Males were found to have longer teeth than females. Reasons for these differences are discussed.

Notes: The egg-laying sequence of Raja clavata from aquarium observations, has been found to consist of a 2-day cycle and to last less than 7 weeks. The mean body length, disc width, and weight of the newly-hatched rays were 118, 75 mm and 8.92 g respectively and the sex ratio was 1: 1.

Notes: Among 972 Scyliorhinus canicula, the overall sex ratio (males:females) was 1:1·23. Males matured between 490 and 540 mm LT with 50% maturity at 520 mm. Females matured between 520 and 640 mm LT with 50% maturity at 550 mm. Female gonadosomatic index peaked in May. Fecundity increased with fish length. The egg laying season lasted 10 months with a peak in June and July. The importance of erect, sessile invertebrates such as bryozoans, poriferans and hydroids as egg-case deposition sites has been established. Recently hatched fish were born in an equal sex ratio and at a mean length of 100·5 mm and mean weight of 3·07 g. One intersexual fish is described.
