Notes: Abstract Objective: The effect of β2-adrenoceptor agonist-induced hypokalaemia on cardiac arrhythmias might be exacerbated during exercise, especially in patients with more compromised airway function. Methods: To evaluate the effect of β2-adrenoceptor agonists on plasma potassium and cardiopulmonary function during exercise, two identical submaximal treadmill exercise tests were performed, at least 48 h apart, by 13 patients with moderate to severe COPD (11 men and 2 women, mean age 66 y, mean FEV1/FVC ratio 48.9 (2.8)%) 30 min after they had received nebulised fenoterol or salbutamol (2 mg). The experiment was done as a randomised, double-blind, crossover trial after an initial baseline study with vehicle (0.45% saline). Plasma potassium concentration, spirometry and the degree of breathlessness (Borg scale) were measured before treatment and immediately after exercise; oxygen saturation, QTc interval and cardiac rhythm were monitored continuously before, during and for 30 min after exercise. Results: After the saline control, exercise caused an increase in Borg rating (of 4.9), a premature ventricular contractions (VPC) (2.8 beats/min), and a fall in oxygen saturation (-6.7%), but no significant change in plasma potassium (+0.04 mEq·dl−1), FEV1 or QTc interval. Inhalation of fenoterol and salbutamol did not affect QTc interval, Borg scale or VPC frequency at rest, but significantly increased the duration of exercise undertaken to reach the submaximal levels (786 s, versus 783 s) compared to the vehicle control. Following exercise, plasma potassium fell after fenoterol by 0.2 mEq·dl−1 and it increased after salbutamol by 0.1 mEq·dl−1 compared to baseline levels. Plasma potassium after exercise was significantly lower after fenoterol (3.2 mEq·dl−1) compared to the saline control (3.7 mEq · dl−1) and salbutamol (3.6 mEq · dl−1). Neither fenoterol nor salbutamol had any significant effect on the change in FEV1, oxygen saturation, Borg scale, frequency of VPCs or QTc interval during or after exercise compared to the saline control. Conclusion: When compared to salbutamol 2 mg, fenoterol 2 mg caused more marked hypokalaemia but no significant difference in cardiopulmonary response in patients with COPD during exercise.

Notes: The method proposed by Chang & Tang [Acta Cryst. (1988), A44, 1065-1072] for quantitative determination of phases of X-ray reflection from three-beam diffraction profiles is applied to an organic crystal of (2R, 3 R)-3-acetoxy-5,7-dihydroxy-6-methylflavanone, with a mosaic spread of 0.08°. The expression for the kinematical diffraction intensities is modified according to the kinematical theory of X-ray diffraction in the multibeam regime. Three-beam Umweganregung and Aufhellung diffraction profiles are analyzed. With the help of the modified intensity expression, the crystal symmetry imposed by the space group and the three-beam diffraction geometry, four acentric phases and fourteen centric phases of structure-factor triplets are determined.

Notes: This report reviews the clinical and hisiopathological reactions caused by sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), and the non-invasive methods that can characterize these reactions. Furthermore, SLS exposure techniques and factors that may influence the outcome of these exposures are discussed. Finally, guidelines are introduced for each exposure technique in order 10 have a uniform approach to SLS jesting in man. Since different study aims warrant different testing conditions, we have proposed 2 categories, namely susceptibility testing and provocative testing, tailored to the aim with which the study is performed.

Notes: Phase transitions in the layer structured (C18H37NH3)2SnCl6 were studied using 1H NMR. The spin-lattice relaxation rate reflects the critical slowing down around the order–disorder phase transition temperature, and is compatible with the three-dimensional Ising model. A critical slowing down is also observed at the conformational transition in the second moment measurement, presumably for the first time. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Although many Viola species are grown as ornamentals, no information on molecular markers is available for the classification and breeding of Viola. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was applied to identify series-specific molecular markers from the series Pinnatae, Chinensis, and Variegatae of Viola species in the subsection Patellares. We report eight RAPD markers which can be used to distinguish three different series of Viola species based on morphological characters. The eight RAPD markers we identified could be useful to classify Viola species and to assist the hybrid breeding of new varieties.

Notes: We have designed three x-ray beamlines extracted out from one 25-pole 1.8 T wiggler insertion device. This wiggler insertion device at the Synchrotron Radiation Research Center 1.3 GeV storage ring will increase the usable x-ray photons with an energy up to 15 keV. In order to satisfy the big x-ray user community at Taiwan, we need to have at least three different types of beamlines to cover various kinds of experiments. Due to limitation of radiation source and space, we have specially designed three x-ray beam lines sharing the 13 mrad horizontal radiation output from the insertion device. The design and construction of these three beamlines will be described in this article. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The results of an investigation of the relationship between potentiodynamic anodic polarization behavior, composition, and microstructure for both sputtered and electroplated Ni-Fe thin-film alloys is described. The presence of high-temperature phases established by sputter deposition correlate directly with the compositional dependence of the passive current density. These results correlate exceptionally well with previous studies on the corrosion of Ni-Fe films under simulated atmospheric conditions. Electroplated films of the permalloy composition show significantly different passive behavior, as compared to sputter deposited films. Possible explanations for this anomaly are discussed.

Notes: Magnetic properties of multilayered Co/Cr films have been investigated by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and compared to magnetization studies carried out on a SQUID magnetometer. The interesting feature observed in most of the spectra was that along with an intense resonance corresponding to the uniform mode, several weak but well-defined peaks were observed at higher magnetic fields. The angular and temperature variations of the line positions indicates that these are due to cobalt atoms in the interface. In conjunction with static magnetization, the FMR studies of the main resonance lead us to believe that there may be long-range magnetic effects which result in additional anisotropy fields.
