    Notes: Abstract A study of $$\bar np$$ annihilations with $$\bar n$$ momentum between 0.5 and 0.8 GeV/c is presented. The search fors-channel resonances in $$\bar np$$ annihilations reveal possibly two narrow structures in the odd pions final state. Inclusiveρ 0 andf 0 cross sections in $$\bar np$$ annihilations have been estimated to be 9.0±0.6 mb and 3.4±0.6 mb respectively. Longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions for inclusiveρ 0 production have been presented. A study of resonance production in exclusive final state revealsρ 0 production to be dominant in the odd pion final states andρ +,ω 0 productions are most important for the even pion final states. Theπ + π − effective mass spectra in the backward and the forward directions in the $$\bar np$$ c.m. system have been examined for a possible ϱ-ω interference effect.

    Notes: Abstract Results are presented on the charge exchange reaction $$\bar pp \to \bar nn$$ and $$\bar np$$ annihilations from bubble chamber exposures to antiproton beam of momenta 700 and 760 MeV/c. The differential cross section of $$\bar pp \to \bar nn$$ shows a forward spike followed by a clear dip bump structure. Total annihilation cross section of $$\bar np$$ for average $$\bar n$$ momentum of 700 MeV/c has been evaluated to be 55.4±2.2 mb. The multiplicity, Feynmanx andp T 2 distributions for inclusive charged pions in $$\bar pp$$ and $$\bar np$$ annihilations are found to be similar. The emission of charged pions from $$\bar np$$ annihilations are found to be consistent with thermodynamic models with temperature ∼110 MeV.

    Notes: Abstract Sensitivities on 0.1 eV HgCdTe photoconductors with new electrode configuration and in different sizes were measured at 77K and under 1014phcm−2s−1 photon background conditions. After data for responsivity, generation-recombination noise (g-r noise) and minority carrier lifetime were reproduced by solving a one dimensional diffusion equation on excess minority carrier, discussions on 1/f noise were made and the following characteristics were concluded: (1) 1/f noise does not originate near electrodes for bias current. (2) 1/f noise hardly depends on sensor size and temperature in the 77–95K range, while g-r noise does. (3) 1/f noise is proportional to bias electric field, i.e. current density. (4) 1/f noise does not depend on photon background. From characteristics (2) and (4), it was concluded that 1/f noise has nothing to do with g-r noise. Finally, a new empirical formula was proposed for 1/f noise.

    Notes: The influence of dilution rate on the production of biomass, ethanol, and invertase in an aerobic culture of Saccharomyces carlsbergensis was studied in a glucose-limited chemostat culture. A kinetic model was developed to analyze the biphasic growth of yeast on both the glucose remaining and the ethanol produced in the culture. The model assumes a double effect where glucose regulates the flux of glucose catabolism (respiration and aerobic fermentation) and the ethanol utilization in yeast cells. The model could successfully demonstrate the experimental results of a chemostat culture featuring the monotonic decrease of biomass concentration with an increase of dilution rate higher than 0.2 hr-1 as well as the maximum ethanol concentration at a particular dilution rate around 0.5 hr-1. Some supplementary data were collected from an ethanol-limited aerobic chemostat culture and a glucose-limited anaerobic chemostat culture to use in the model calculation. Some parametric constants of cell growth, ethanol production, and invertase formation were determined in batch cultures under aerobic and anaerobic states as summarized in a table in comparison with the chemostat data. Using the constants, a prediction of the optimal control of a glucose fed-batch yeast culture was conducted in connection with an experiment for harvesting a high yield of yeast cells with high invertase activity.
