Notes: A new detection scheme for Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) studies is proposed and initial experimental results are presented. While in conventional FT-ICR, the difference of the transient signals from two opposite electrodes is recorded and Fourier transformed, it is also possible to use the sum of these signals. In this way resonances are observed at the harmonic of the reduced cyclotron frequency 2 ν+ as well as ν+−ν− and ν++ν−, the later being important for accurate mass measurements. The experiments were performed with a Penning trap in an electromagnet.

Notes: Summary Specific “reference areas” were derived from relationships between the proteins prealbumin, albumin, alpha1-acid glycoprotein, alpha2-macroglobulin, total transferrin, IgG, IgA, IgM, and the corresponding total protein in normal lumbar CSF samples. The procedure for calculating the boundary lines of these reference areas was carried out on the basis of double standard deviations in subgroups with total protein differences of 50 ml/l within the whole range of 150–400 ml/l CSF. The resulting biochemical data, hydrodynamic radii of the individual proteins investigated, and van Deurs' and Koehler's morphological findings on the existence of pores in the barrier-forming tight junctions of the choroid plexus epithelium could be surprisingly well correlated with one another, although these morphological findings were obtained in choroid plexus of the rat brain. The correlation allowed the conclusion that proteins undergo ultrafiltration via a pattern of tight junction pores with various diameters. However, the molecular mechanism seems to include an additional facilitating component.

Notes: Abstract The isotope shift between197Au (stable) and the radioactive Au isotopes190Au,191Au,192Au and193Au were determined by resonance fluorescence spectroscopy in the 6s 2 S 1/2–6p 2 P 1/2.λ=267.6nm line. The unstable Au isotopes were produced at the ISOLDE mass separator at CERN. The nuclei were investigated semi on-line in a resonance vessel, heated to 1,400°C. The results areδν 190,197=−11.12(39) GHz,δν 191,197=−9.67(12) GHz,δν 192,197=−8.32(15) GHz,δν 193,197=−6.29(11) GHz, corresponding to a change of the mean-square charge radius byδ〈r 2〉190,197 =0.261(12) fm2,δ〈r 2〉191,197=0.227(5) fm2,δ〈r 2〉192,197=0.195(5) fm2,δ〈r 2〉193,197 =0.148(4) fm2.

Notes: Abstract Neutron rich205Hg (T 1/2=5.2 min) was produced and on-line mass separated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The polarization achieved by optical pumping via the atomic line (6s 21 S 0↔6s6p 3 P 1,λ=2 537Å) was monitored by theβ decay asymmetry. Hyperfine structure and isotopic shift of the205Hg absorption line was determined by Zeeman scanning. In addition a magnetic resonance was performed on the polarized205Hg nuclei in the atomic ground state. The results are: $$I(^{205} Hg) = \tfrac{1}{2}$$ (confirmed);μ I (205Hg)=0.5915 (1)μ N (uncorrected for diamagnetism); isotopic shiftδv204/205=v(205Hg)-v(204Hg)=−1.8 (1) GHz.μ I and IS are discussed briefly in the frame of current literature.

Notes: Abstract An optical pumping apparatus has been attached to the reconstructed ISOLDE on-line mass separator at CERN in order to obtain nuclear data of isotopes far fromβ stability. As first results the spins of76Rb (T 1/2=36.8 s) and119Cs (T 1/2=37.7 s) have been determined byβ radiation detected optical pumping (β-RADOP) to beI=1 andI=9/2 respectively.

Notes: Abstract Resonance ionization mass spectroscopy (RIMS) and pulsed-laser induced desorption (PLID) have been combined in order to study the isotope shift (IS) and hyperfine structure (HFS) of184Au (T1/2=53 s) and183Au (T1/2=42 s) in the 6s2S1/2 → 6p2P1/2 (λ=267 nm) transition. The Au isotopes were obtained as daughters in the decay of184,183Hg produced and mass separated at the new ISOLDE-3 facility at CERN. It was found that the strong deformationβ 2}-0.25 setting in at186Au persists down to183Au.

Notes: Abstract Gamma-ray energy correlations have been measured for several reactions leading to light-mass Hf isotopes with 160 ⩽A⩽166. The correlation spectra show ridge-valley structures up to high rotational frequencies from which a drop in J c (2) is deduced at high frequencies. This drop suggests that a large portion of the angular momentum is generated by aligning particles. It may also be explained by the theoretically predicted triaxial states with large deformation.

Notes: Abstract 199mHg was produced and mass separated at the ISOLDE facility (CERN). Nuclear orientation achieved by optical pumping via the resonance line 6s 2 1 S 0→6s6p 3 P 1,λ=2537Å was monitored by means of the anisotropy of theγ-radiation emitted in the cascade199mHg(I=13/2+) $${}^{199m}Hg(I = 13/2^ + )\xrightarrow[{M4}]{}{}^{199*}Hg(I = 5/2^ - )\xrightarrow[{E2}]{}{}^{199}Hg(I = 1/2^ - ).$$ 199*Hg(I=5/2−)199Hg(I=1/2−). Maximum anisotropies of 35% (2,8%) were found in the M4 (E2) transition. A Zeeman scanning of the3 P 1 state yielded the positions ofF=13/2 and theF=15/2 hfs components relative to the reference isotope204Hg at 15.13 (15) GHz and −2.86 (15) GHz respectively. Isotopic shift and the quadrupole interaction constant were deduced from these values using the knownA factor.δv 199m/2O4=v 2O4−v 199m=12.20 (16) GHzB=−0.86 (25) GHz. From theB factor the spectroscopic quadrupolment was calculated asQ s =1.54 (44) barn.

Notes: Abstract Excited states in162Hf were investigated up to spinI ≈ 38 using the anti-Comptonspectrometer array HERA with 21 detectors. In addition, some information was obtained on161Hf. The analysis of triple coincidences was crucial for the construction of the level schemes. The results are interpreted within the framework of the cranked shell model and are compared to neighbouring isotopes and isotones, showing Fermi level and deformation effects. The systematic behaviour of the band crossings in the Hf isotopes and theN=90 isotones is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Resonance ionization mass spectroscopy (RIMS) and pulsed-laser induced desorption (PLID) have been combined for ultrasensitive detection and spectroscopy of very small samples of refractive elements. The method has been tested and applied to laser spectroscopy of 5×109 atoms (1.5 pg) of195Au (T 1/2= 183d) implanted at the ISOLDE online mass separator with 60 keV into graphite. A pulsed thermal atomic beam was formed by laser desorption with a 10 ns Nd∶Yag laser pulse. Subsequently the atoms were photoionized in a three-colour, three-step resonant excitation to an autoionizing state. The selectivity was enhanced by a time-of-flight measurement of the photo ions. In resonance, one ion was detected per 105 atoms implanted resulting in a gain in detection efficiency by three orders of magnitude in comparison to the use of a continuous atomic beam. In the course of the experiments several unknown autoionizing states were found, and the lifetime of the 6d 2 D 3/2 state of gold was determined to beτ=10.7(6) ns.
