Notizen: Abstract Type II, III, and continuum solar radio events, as well as intense terrestrial magnetospheric radio emissions, were observed at low frequencies (10 MHz to 30 kHz) by the IMP-6 satellite during the period of high solar activity in August 1972. This review covers briefly the unique direction finding capability of the experiment, as well as a detailed chronology of the low frequency radio events, and, where possible, their association with both groundbased radio observations and solar flares. The attempted observation of solar bursts in the presence of intense magnetospheric noise may, as illustrated, lead to erroneous results in the absence of directional information. The problem of assigning an electron density scale and its influence on determining burst trajectories is reviewed. However, for the disturbed conditions existing during the period in question, we feel that such trajectories cannot be determined accurately by this method. In conclusion, the capabilities, limitations, and observing programs of present and future satellite experiments are briefly discussed.

Notizen: Abstract We use Hα, X-ray, and kilometric radio data to examine the solar coronal activity associated with energetic (∼1 MeV/nucl−1) 3He-rich particle events observed near Earth. The basis of the study is the 12 3He-rich events observed in association with impulsive 2 to 100 keV electron events reported by Reames et al. (1985). We find that when Hα and X-ray brightenings can be associated with 3He/electron events, they have onsets coinciding to within 1 min of that of the associated metric type III bursts. In three or four events we found no associated Hα or X-ray flares, and in two events even the metric type III bursts were weak or absent. The measured low-energy (2 keV) electron spectra for these events show no evidence of a flattening due to Coulomb collisional losses. These results and several other recent findings are consistent with the idea that the 3He/electron events are due to particle acceleration in the corona well above the associated Hα and X-ray flares.

Notizen: Abstract The existence of a class of fast-drift, shock-associated (SA), kilometric radio bursts which occur at the time of metric type II emission and which are not entirely the kilometric continuation of metric type III bursts has been reported previously (Cane et al., 1981). In this paper, we establish unambiguous SA event criteria for the purpose of statistically comparing SA events with conventional kilometric type III bursts. We apply these criteria to all long-duration, fast-drift bursts observed by the ISEE-3 spacecraft during a 28-month interval and find that more than 70% of the events satisfying the criteria are associated with the radio signatures of coronal shocks. If a given event in our sample is associated with a metric type II or type IV burst, it is 13 times more likely to satisfy the SA criteria than an event associated only with metric type III activity. Compared with conventional kilometric type III bursts, the characteristics of these SA events are longer duration, higher maximum intensity, and a larger number of components. Differences in these characteristics for the two classes of events are not sufficient to distinguish all SA events from conventional type III bursts. The consistent lack of reported metric type III activity during the latter part of the candidate events suggests that some of the electrons are accelerated high in the corona, at or near the altitude of the shock.

Notizen: Abstract A magnetic loop located beyond 20 R ⊙ appears to be the later evolution of an expanding magnetic arch observed at 2 r ⊙. The expansion speed is of the order of 100 km s−1.

Notizen: Abstract A local density approximation (LDA) method is developed for reconstructing the trajectories of type III radio bursts through the interplanetary medium. The method uses the measured source directions and the measured frequency drift rates of the type III burst to determine the locations of the radio source in the interplanetary medium at consecutive frequency levels. The technique is used to reconstruct the trajectory of an actual type III burst and the results are compared to the trajectory obtained from the global density law method. The LDA method represents an improvement in that it utilizes more observed data on the type III burst and that it takes full account of the local density variations at the source locations.

Notizen: Summary A longitudinal study of changes in rheumatoid factor levels and their correlations with other clinical and laboratory assessment of disease activity followed 45 rheumatoid arthritis patients during 12 months continuous therapy with gold and penicillamine. Rheumatoid factors were measured by the titred latex assay and by ELISA assays for IgM and IgG rheumatoid factor. The IgM ELISA assay correlated strongly with the titred latex assay and weakly with the IgG rheumatoid factor assay at 0, 6 and 12 months. All showed significant falls with treatment, and ELISA assays were not more sensitive indicators than the latex assay. Correlations of initial rheumatoid factor levels by all 3 assays to 34 other clinical and laboratory assessments showed that only a small number of weak correlations existed; there were more at 6 and 12 months, but still not many. Changes in rheumatoid factor levels over 0–6 months showed no significant correlation to changes in other variables. There were no more correlations with ELISA assays than with titred latex rheumatoid factor. We conclude that ELISA rheumatoid factor assays have no clinically relevant advantage over the titred latex assay when following rheumatoid patients treated with gold or penicillamine.

Notizen: A cDNA clone of porcine alpha1 acid glycoprotein (α1AGP) has been isolated and sequenced. Sequence homologies between porcine, human, and rat indicate that porcine α1AGP is similar in structure to the rat and human proteins. RNA blots from days 40, 60, 80, and 110 fetal, newborn, and adult livers showed that α1AGP mRNA is relatively abundant throughout fetal development, particularly at the later stages and in the newborn; there is a rapid decline in abundance following birth. From birth to 3 days of age, there is a three- to four-fold decline in abundance, and α1AGP mRNA is approximately 100 times less abundant in the adult liver than in that of perinatal pigs. Southern blots showed that α1AGP is probably a single-copy gene. The isolation of a cloned cDNA for porcine α1AGP provides a tool to investigate the molecular mechanisms involved in the developmental regulation of the gene and to correlate changes in gene expression during development with fetal growth and well being.
