    Notes: Summary Parenchymal deposits with the histochemical characteristics of acid glycosaminoglycans were discovered in the brains of 12 chimpanzees ranging from 6 months gestational age to 17 months post partum. Similar deposits were not seen in the brains of one fetus of approximately 3 1/2 month gestational age or in the brains of three animals that were 10 or more years of age. The deposits were found primarily in thecapsula interna, lentiform nucleus, andcapsula externa. Only a few deposits were located in the thalamus. In most instances, the mucopolysaccharid deposits were surrounded by accumulations of glial cells indicating a weak to moderate glial reaction.

    Notes: Summary Adult African green monkeys and young baboons were inoculated with a baboon-derived herpesvirus (0430) which is antigenically related to herpesvirus SA8. The African green monkeys were not clinically affected, but virus could be recovered from explants. In baboons, pathogenicity was inversely related to age. In intratracheally-inoculated newborns and, to a lesser extent, in intravenously-inoculated newborns, the virus produced severe disease accompanied by weight loss, anorexia, malaise, dyspnea and fever. In 2-month and 1-year-old baboons, the virus produced no clinical symptoms. In all cases, recovery of virus from explants was superior to recovery from tissue homogenates using routine methods.

    Notes: Abstract The absence of appreciable spin-orbit splitting in the low-lying even and odd parity states of the nucleon and delta is puzzling in conventional quark models. A constitutent quark model, in which the quarks interact through gluon as well as pion exchange, and the baryon is allowed to deform in the excited states, may provide a solution to the problem.

    Notes: Abstract The imaginary part of the optical potential for nuclear ion-ion scattering in the energy range 20 MeV ≲E/A ≲ 200 MeV is derived using Feshbach's projection formalism. It is defined as the effective absorptive potential in the projected one-body Schroedinger equation for the relative motion of the colliding nuclei. Calculations are done in the Thomas-Fermi approximation, which accounts in a simple way for all phase-space effects as well as for the finite size of the ions. Intrinsic excitations are considered to be of one particle — one hole type in either of the ions, the other remaining in its ground state. The effective two-body interaction is taken to be of finite range. Further simplifications of the model consist in neglecting antisymmetrization between the mutual wave functions of the two ions and in the omission of the Coulomb energy.
