Notes: Abstract The specific humoral immune response against Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) antigens in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) was compared to that of patients with infectious mononucleosis (IM) and other EBV-seropositive subjects using immunoblotting technique. Almost all sera from E,BV serologically associated NPC reacted reproducibly with a major group of polypeptides (four to six) of early antigen (EA) complex with molecular weights ranging from 50 kD to 58 kD, and with some additional polypeptides. Sera from IM-patients reproducibly recognized only one polypeptide of 50 kD belonging to the major group of polypeptides of EA-complex. Sera from patients with other types of head and neck cancer and relatively high levels of IgG antibody against viral capsid antigen (VCA) and EA did not react reproducibly with any of the EBV-associated proteins.

Notes: Abstract Adenoviruses were detected in the stools in 459 of 3932 (111.6%) pediatric children hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis from January 1981 to December 1985. Out of the 459 adenovirus specimens 325 (8.3%) were presumptively identified as enteric adenovirus both by an adenovirus genus specific ELISA and by growth characteristics of adenovirus isolates in HEp-2 cells and in 293 cells. Enteral adenoviruses were found endemic since these viruses have been found for 5 successive years. A seasonal variation in the rates of adenovirus was also observed. Comparative data of rotavirus prevalence in the same study population are reported.

Notes: [Auszug] As most surname can be considered as neutral alleles of a genetic locus, they can be analysed using the theory of Karlin and McGregor6, which gives the distribution of neutral alleles expected in a population of N haploid individuals, each carrying one of k different alleles (surnames, in our ...

Notes: Abstract The element distributions for the reactions32S+100Mo,32S+93Nb, and28Si+93Nb have been measured atE/B∼1.4. The correlations between the first moment of the measured distributions and TKEL are consistent with the predictions of the liquid drop potential energy surfaces showing the charge equilibration of the dinuclear systems. The measured second moments are compared with a recent systematics.

Notes: Abstract The reactions induced by 143 MeV32S on58Ni have been studied detecting discrete γ-rays in coincidence with projectile-like fragments (PLF). Information on PLF excitation probability and sequential decay of target-like fragments (TLF) has been obtained. For the28Si+62Zn outgoing channel at small energy loss (¦Q¦〈20 MeV), both PLF and TLF data indicate that thermal equilibrium is not attained. The hypothesis of an equal excitation energy partition between the two reaction fragments does not describe properly experimental TLF data. A dependence of PLF excitation probability on the outgoing channel is found for the two final channels32S+58Ni and28Si+62Zn. The values of the spin alignment parameterP zz, derived for PLF and TLF from measurements ofγ-rays anisotropy, are in disagreement with the expectations of the transport theory for dissipative collisions.

Notes: Abstract The deep-inelastic reaction induced by 143 MeV32S on58Ni have been studied detecting projectile-like fragments (PLF) in coincidence withγ-rays in NaI(TI) scintillators. γ-ray multiplicity and anisotropy have been derived for Zplf=14, 15 as a function of energy loss and/or γ-energy. The information obtained are compared with a discrete γ-line study of the same reaction. The effect of the exit channel selection (ejectileZ, energy loss,E γ) on the γ-observables is discussed in connection with the evidence of a strong PLF γ-emission.

Notes: Processing involves complex polymer flow problems, either in the melt or in solution. Rheologists have developed many studies with the aim of correlating polymer structure with flow properties and polymer processing. Most of these studies, however, have had relatively little impact on practical processing because of the difficulty in solving the mathematical equations involved. Recently, a relatively few papers have been published with the aim of bridging the gap between theoretical rheology and technology. The first part of the paper presents an account of works which have dealt with the process of filling a mold cavity. The second part discusses briefly some experimental results which provide a correlation between moldability and rheological properties. By analogy with the terms “electrology” and “electrotechnics,” the term “rheotechnics” is suggested for this new area of study.

Notes: Cylinders (0.8 cm long, 1.0 cm of diameter and with an axial hole), constituted, after firing, of a ceramic mixture of hydroxylapatite (HA) and β-ricalciumphosphate (β-TCP) in a 10:1 ratio, were implanted into mid-diaphiseal defects of one femur of 20 rabbits and stabilized with intramedullary rods. The implantation sites were checked radiographically every month, and after 3 months (3 animals) and 6 months (17 animals) the rabbits were sacrificed and the implants with the surrounding tissue were embedded in methylmetacrylate, cut to thick sections and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Porosimetric and x-rays diffraction analyses were carried out before and after implantation of the cylinders, and the state of mineralization at the bone-implant interface was determined by EDAX microprobe analysis. Bony callus formation started at 1 month at the osteotomy sites, as judged by radiography, but after 3 months a not-mineralized zone had still been demonstrated between bone and the implants. At 6 months, 13 implants showed themselves firmly fixed in their implantations beds, while 4 implants were only incorporated at their proximal ends. In bone contact zones, an enrichment of Ca2+ was displayed by microanalytical techniques in the outer zone of the implanted samples which may be explained by an apparent additional phase transformation of HA into TCP, thanks to the change of the Ca/P ratio, that takes place in vivo.
