Notes: Summary An X-ray spectral analysis (EDAX) of isolated undischarged nematocysts of various cnidarians (Hydrozoa, Scyphozoa, Anthozoa) revealed the presence of extremely high concentrations of divalent cations. InHydra nematocysts both Ca2+ (conc. 0.36 μmole/mg dry cysts) and Mg2+ (conc. 0.80 μmole/mg dry cysts) ions add up to a total in situ concentration of 0.5 to 1.0 M. More than 85% of the cations, which are believed to be involved in cyst discharge, are contained in the soluble fraction of the cysts, where they must be bound to high molecular weight molecules.

Description / Table of Contents: Contents The current/time and voltage/time functions are derived for the principal and auxiliary arms of a self-commutated inverter as well as for its commutating capacitor. This is done at the example of the directly commutated (parallel type) inverter. The results are given as formulac as well as in figures for the different in tervals during the commutating process. Formulac for the electrical design of the components of the commutating circuit are derived.

Description / Table of Contents: Contents Analytical terms to determine the diversion of current into a twin conductor and a parallel connected co-axial cable are set up, whereat the twin conductor is originally fed by sinusoidal alternating current having an amplitudeI and the radian frequency while core and sheath of the coaxial cable are connected each parallel to one of the phases of the twin conductor. — From the beginning skin effect occuring in the coaxial cable is completely considered and later on — according to the dimensions of the arrangement — approximated, while skin effect occuring in the twin conductor is neglected. — Moreover, an equivalent circuit is given having impedances that can be determined from the dimensions of the arrangement and from the skin depth.

Notes: Summary Even though the enhancement of the lyitc capacity and the kinetics of lysis of natural killer cells (NK) by interferon has been well documented, an increase of the target-effector cell binding percentage is still disputed. We, therefore, modified the Grimm-Bonavida single-cell assay so that 400 to 600 cells per individual determination could be reliably evaluated. Using this assay, which makes possible separate determination of effector-target cell binding and target lysis, we demonstrated that, in addition to lytic capacity, target-effector cell binding is also increased by preincubating NK with 100 to 1,000 IU interferon alpha 2 per 106 cells. Our data indicate that interferon alpha 2 induces pre-NK cells to bind target cells and that it activates these pre-NK cells to kill the targets.

Notes: Abstract Ecological surveys involving over 500 man-days between 1966 and 1969 indicate that the coral-eating sea star, Acanthaster planci, is a normal component of the coral reef community throughout the tropical Pacific, and that its abundance in the past has probably been underestimated. The sea star is not uncommon in certain environments, particularly back-reef and lagoon slopes. Sheltered, inner reefs are generally preferred over less protected reefs. Recently reported “population explosions” of A. planci at Guam and on the Great Barrier Reef of Australia appear to be isolated, widely-separated, local infestations of unknown cause. The infestation on the Great Barrier Reef has not spread beyond the area off Cairns and Innisfail. Approximately 40 of the more than 1000 reefs comprising the Great Barrier Reef complex have been infested heavily.

Notes: Abstract Average radial growth rates of the hemispherical aragonite colonies deposited by the Indo-Pacific scleractinian reef coral Platygyra spp. were determined by measuring the thickness of density variations in the skeleton that are revealed by X-radiography. Ninety-one specimens from 21 localities were examined, but only 54 of these exhibited well-defined growth-banding. The apparent temperature dependence of growth rate is linear over the range 23.9° to 29.3°C, averaging 5.4±0.94 mm/year at 24°C, 8.0±0.42 mm/year at 27°C, and 9.7 ±0.58 mm/year at 29°C (90% confidence limits). Expression of the influence of temperature on growth rate in terms of the Arrhenius equation yields an activation energy of 20,680 cal/mole, which is comparable to values for typical biological reactions, but is only half that reported for skeletogenesis in another reef coral, Pocillopora damicornis, on the basis of controlled incubation studies involving 45Ca uptake.

Notes: Abstract Some coelenterates of the class Hydrozoa and some anthozoan coelenterates from the subclass Octocorallia secrete skeletons of calcium carbonate. Skeletal carbonates of three hydrozoans and of two octocorals were analyzed for the stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen. The results suggest that each of these coelenterates deposits CaCO3 in oxygen isotopic equilibrium with seawater, and that at least one octocoral, Heliopora, has skeletal carbon in apparent isotopic equilibrium with atmospheric CO2. Two of these coelenterates, Millepora and Helipora, are significant contributors to the construction of coral reefs. Whereas δ18O of these corals is temperature dependent, δ13C is not obviously related to temperature. The δ18O-temperature relationship is not significantly different from the oxygen isotope paleotemperature scale developed by Epstein et al. (1953). These findings contrast with numerous analyses of the carbonate in scleractinian coelenterates, which have long been reported to deposit CaCO3 skeletons whose carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions are not in equilibrium with the external sea-water environment.

Notes: Summary Three hundred and ninety-two subjects from 89 German families were typed for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) detected by the probes pmetH, pmetD, pJ3.11, KM19, and XV2c known to be tightly linked to the cystic fibrosis (CF) gene. The analysis of the predictive value of this typing in individual CF families indicates that the combined use of these probes provides a powerful diagnostic system for both carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis. In 45 families the complete haplotype including all RFLPs was available. Of them 41 (91.1%) were fully informative and 4 were partly informative.
