Notes: We present a theoretical analysis of the effect of noise color on the mean beat frequency of a ring-laser gyroscope based on the matrix continued-fraction technique. The results are compared to measurements made on an electronic circuit model, and to digital simulations.

Notes: Pseudopotentials are used for investigating the effects of relativity and correlation on atomic properties of Br and I, and on bond lengths and dissociation energies of the molecules HBr, HI, Br2, and I2. The pseudopotentials are adjusted to energies of Br6+ and I6+ on different levels of approximation: (i) to Hartree–Fock data for the nonrelativistic case, (ii) to Dirac–Fock data for the relativistic case, and (iii) to experimental energies for the relativistic case including correlation. At the highest level of approximation, atomic ionization energies, electron affinities, molecular dissociation energies, and bond lengths are obtained in good agreement with the experimental results.

Notes: Abstract Continuous mixed venous oxygen saturation SvO2c was measured in 16 infants immediately after cardiac surgery. A polyurethane 4F, dual channel catheter (Opticath, Modell U440, Oximetrix) with fiberoptic filaments was introduced into the pulmonary artery during cardiothoracic surgery. The catheters were left in place for an average of 67.5 h (range 27 h – 125 h) and there were no catheter-related complications. Correlation between continuous in vivo SvO2 values and in vitro values was satisfactory (r=0.85), whereas a correlation between SvO2c and arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) was not found (r=0.07). The sampled arterial lactate values were inversely correlated to the simultaneously measured SvO2c, but the corelation coefficient was only r=-0.4. There was an inverse correlation between SvO2c and arteriovenous oxygen content difference (Ca−vDO2c) (r=-0.82), and a marked inverse correlation to the calculated oxygen utilization ratio (r=-0.97). Therefore SvO2c continuously reflects the overall balance between oxygen consumption and delivery, but the use of SvO2 as a predictor of blood lactate levels is unreliable. A further purpose of the present study was to demonstrate the clinical applications and to show the usefulness of SvO2c-monitoring; particularly as a surveillance and early warning system, as a guide for assessing therapy and its relevance in interpreting other monitored parameters. In our opinion continuous SvO2 measurement is a reliable and valuable indicator of cardiopulmonary function in the immediate post-operative period, even in infants with complicated repair of cardiac malformations.

Notes: Abstract Recent accidents in chemical plants involving compounds previously thought to have been Harmless, demonstrate the importance of complete safety screening. Modern DSC instruments using rugged sensors and CRT graphics allow fast investigations of substances and mixtures in question. In addition to potential hazard due to exothermic reaction, DSC supplies information concerning drying, melting, purity, polymorphic transitions, sublimation and vaporization. Our paper deals with measurements of selected inorganic and organic samples that undergo decomposition in the applied temperature range of room temperature up to 700°C. The measurements are performed by the Mettler TA 3000 Thermal Analysis System with the new computer graphics and evaluation software GraphWare TA72.

Description / Table of Contents: For column chromatography of dissolved materials silica gel preparations with systematically changed space structure are used. Differences of space structure are characterised by a distinctive parameter of space structure, the specific pore volume.Separations are described which are no longer effected by differentiated chemical reactions of the dissolved materials with the silica gel surface, but only by a differentiated distribution of the larger and smaller particles of the dissolved materials between the mobile phase of the solvent and the quasi-stationary phase of this solvent within the wide pores of the silica gel granules.Separations were made of the following material systems:Thorium oxide sol/Cl ions (using water as solvent), styrene/polystyrene (using benzene or chloroform as solvent), paraffin/polystyrene (using chloroform as solvent). Polystyrene as a mixture of polymeric homologues of the mean molecular weight 38,000 or 250,000 is fractionated. In the successive fractions the mean molecular weight decreases.
