Notes: Summary To clarify whether activity of the sympathetic nervous system is decreased in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, noradrenaline turnover, which is a reliable indicator of sympathetic nervous system activity, was measured in the interscapular brown adipose tissue, heart and pancreas of streptozotocin diabetic rats. Results from studies using inhibition of noradrenaline biosynthesis with α-methyl-p-tyrosine demonstrated significant reductions (p〈0.05-0.001) in sympathetic nervous system activity in the interscapular brown adipose tissue, heart and pancreas of streptozotocin (65 mg/kg) diabetic rats, compared with measurements in streptozotocin (35 mg/kg) diabetic and saline-control rats. The daily injections of neutral protamine Hagedorn insulin to streptoz/otocin (65 mg/kg) diabetic rats prevented the decrease of noradrenaline turnover in the interscapular brown adipose tissue and heart significantly (p〈0.02), but this was less marked in pancreas, compared with non-treated streptozotocin (65 mg/kg) diabetic rats. Furthermore reduced noradrenaline turnover was also observed in the control rats which showed comparable changes in body weight to the rats injected with streptozotocin (65 mg/kg). These results suggest that poorly controlled streptozotocin diabetic rats may have reduced sympathetic nervous function, and that insulin therapy might prevent this.

Notes: The differences in the energy transport equations for tokamaks and stellarators associated with ΓrEr are discussed, where Γr is the radial particle flux and Er is the radial electric field. The energy exchange quantities are evaluated in terms of poloidal plasma flow, pressure gradient, and Er. It is found that for stellarators the radial flux Γr in ΓrEr should be Γr =Γna, the nonaxisymmetric flux, instead of the total particle flux.

Notes: Summary A 50-year-old man with a 1-year history of transient attacks of left total hemiparesis was admitted to hospital with a complaint of increasing frequency of attacks. Minimal or moderate left hemiparesis was elicited by elevation of environmental temperature when taking a hot bath or a hot shower. Right carotid angiography revealed an early-filling vein near the right central sulcus. An increase of focal luxury perfusion by elevation of body temperature seemed to cause relative ischaemia in this paracentral gyrus.

Notes: Summary Projections from the basal ganglia to the nucleus tegmenti pedunculopontinus pars compacta (TPC) were studied by using anterograde and retrograde tracing techniques with horseradish peroxidase conjugated with wheat germ agglutinin (WGA-HRP) in the cat. Following WGA-HRP injections into the medial TPC area, a substantial number of retrogradely labeled cells were seen in the entopeduncular nucleus (EP) and medial half of the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr), whereas following WGA-HRP injections into the lateral TPC area, labeled cells were marked in the caudal half of the globus pallidus (GP) and lateral half of the SNr. To confirm the retrograde tracing study, WGA-HRP was injected into the EP or the caudal GP, and anterograde labeling was observed in the TPC areas. Terminal labeling was located in the medail TPC area in the EP injection case, while terminal labeling was observed in the lateral TPC area in the caudal GP injection case. Projections from the striatum to the pallidal complex (the EP and the caudal GP) were also studied autoradiographically by injecting amino acids into various parts of the caudate nucleus and the putamen. Terminal labeling was distributed over the whole extent of the EP and the rostral GP following injections into the rostral striatum (the head of the caudate nucleus or the rostral part of the putamen), while terminal labeling was distributed over the caudal GP following injections into the caudal striatum (the body of the caudate nucleus or the caudal part of the putamen). From these findings, we conclude that there exists a medio-lateral topography in the projection from the basal ganglia to the TPC: The EP receives afferent projections from the rostral striatum and projects to the medial TPC area, whereas the caudal GP receives projections from the caudal striatum and sends fibers to the lateral TPC area.

Notes: Abstract Spectroscopic observations were performed of the early-type contact binary AW Lac with an image-intensified coude spectrograph of 1.9-m telescope at the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. A total of twenty-two spectra covering blue region with a dispersion of 16 Amm-1 have been secured on Kodak IIa-O baked plates. In every spectra sharp interstellar CaII H,K lines are clearly seen. The spectral type of AW Lac has been estimated as early B, which substantially confirms the one adopted in the photometric analysis by Jiang et al. (1983) and is diffrent from A0 listed in General Catalogue of Variable Stars (Kholopov et al. 1985). Contrary to the suggestion by the photometric solution of Jiang et al., no definite secondary lines could be separated, though some indications of light contamination due to the secondary component are surely observed. This would imply that the light ratio of the components should be somewhat smaller than that derived by photometric analysis. No emission features appeared either. The measurement of radial velocities of the primary component for the orbital elements was made for twenty spectra by a conventional method. It was difficult to measure the radial velocities because the lines are quite broadened and deformed. Hence the measured values for the radial velocities should be regarded as rather preliminary. The derived spectroscopic elements, combined with the photometric data, give the absolute dimensions of the system for each assumed mass ratio q. For q = 1, being the adopted photometric solution by Jiang et al., we obtain too small value for the primary's mass, comparing with its spectral type. For the mass ratio as small as q = 0.6, we can obtain a reasonable value for the mass of the primary. However, in order to get more definite conclusion the cross-correlation method would be more appropriate for the spectroscopic analysis of this system.

Notes: Abstract From analysis of the photometric ellipticity effect in seven well-understood detached close binary systems, empirical values of the exponent α of gravity-darkening have been practically deduced for eleven main-sequence components of spectral types A, F and G which should cover the range of structural change (from radiative to convective) in stellar atmospheres. The result indicate that values of the exponent diminish gradually with decreasing effective temperatures from α ∼ 1.0 for radiative atmospheres with T 〉 8500 K to α = 0.2 ∼ 0.3 for convective atmospheres with T 〈 6500 K, in spite of some uncertainty in the reflection correction process.

Notes: Abstract Tritium concentrations were analyzed for coastal seawater and lake water collected from various places in Japan. Low tritium concentrations were observed for coastal seawater of small islands and it was attributed to a short residence time of the ground-water in such a small island. Tritium concentrations in lake water showed a significant variation. And it was revealed that the size of the lake and its drainage area were the dominant factors controlling the tritium concentrations in lakes.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer effect measurements were carried out for sputtered fcc Fe-Ag and Fe-Cu alloys annealed at various temperatures. At temperatures higher than 300 °C, the metastable fcc phases decompose by removing saturated Fe atoms. During the phase separation processes, the ejected Fe atoms form clusters, which initially have a fcc structure and transform to bcc particles as their sizes grow beyond a critical value.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear quadrupole resonances (NQR) of139La in La2−xMxCuO4 (M=Ba, Sr) and63Cu in YBa2CU3O7 have been investigated with substitution of Cu by magnetic impurities. For La-system, the strong enhancement of the nuclear relaxation rate, 1/T 1 atT c *≈10 K (suggesting the occurrence of magnetic instability with hole-doping), is suppressed by 3D-antiferromagnetism induced by magnetic impurities. In the superconducting region, fluctuations of Cu moments at low temperatures remain extremely fast as at high temperatures. For Y-system, Fe-ions are substituted for both Cu(1) and Cu(2) sites, But Co-ions are preferentially substituted to Cu1 sites. The peaks in the relaxation rate of Cu indicate the appearance of magnetic ordering without destroying superconductivity for the 0.5%-Fe doped sample.
