Notes: We have extended the Kobayashi, Sankey, and Dow [Phys. Rev. B 25, 6367 (1982)] theory of deep levels in Hg1−xCdxTe to include (vacancy, impurity) nearest-neighbor pairs. In qualitative agreement with the results obtained by these workers for isolated point defects, we find that the composition dependences (dE/dx) of the defect energy levels associated with such complexes depend on the site occupied by the impurity atom. Furthermore, we find that the composition dependences of some of the defect levels produced by such a complex are very different than the dE/dx of levels associated with the corresponding isolated point defects. We thus suggest that this theory can often be used as an aid in the identification of the defect center producing an observed energy level. In particular, it can be used to obtain site information about an observed level and, in favorable cases, to distinguish between levels produced by isolated point defects and those produced by complexes. As an example, we compare our theoretical predictions for the dE/dx of levels associated with (vacancy, impurity) pairs to the experimental slopes of the energy levels observed in deep level transient spectroscopy by Jones, Nair, and Polla [Appl. Phys. Lett. 39, 248 (1981)] and find that the theory lends support to these workers' interpretation of their data. In addition, we present new photoluminescence data on both a previously observed and identified acceptor and on an unknown center in Hg1−xCdxTe. As a further example of the usefulness of our theory, we compare the theoretical slopes of energy levels associated with (vacancy, impurity) pairs with the composition dependences of the defect levels extracted from the photoluminescence data. The results of both of the theoretical-experimental comparisons show that the theory can be used successfully, in conjunction with experimental data, to aid in the identification of the defect center which produces an observed energy level.

Notes: Aggressive growth by legumes may restrict the diversity of species-rich meadows recreated on sites restored after mineral extraction. We investigated the ability of mineral nitrogen (N) applications and spring grazing to control the legume component of such meadows. The use of N suppressed Trifolium repens but had no effect on other legume species or on the species richness, diversity, or equitability of the meadow community. Spring grazing significantly reduced the yield from the legume component of the meadow. This was accompanied by an increase in the equitability index of the community, suggesting that the aggressive nature of the legumes had been checked. Spring grazing may therefore provide a means of controlling aggressive legume growth and may maintain the diversity of species-rich meadows established on restored sites.

Notes: We conducted an experiment with the dual aims of (1) examining the feasibility of establishing a species-rich grassland using a commercially available grass and wild-flower seed mixture and (2) examining the effects of different defoliation and fertilizer managements on the productivity, species richness, diversity, and composition of a species-rich grassland established on a site reclaimed after opencast coal mining. The use of the seed mixture successfully established a sward of some 18–25 species per square meter. The species composition was enriched to some extent by recruitment of unsown species, principally from the soil seed bank. Hay-type defoliation management produced greater dry matter yield and species richness than grazing defoliation, but grazing defoliation produced greater species diversity. Fertilizer application had no significant effect on dry matter production but reduced species diversity. Ordination analysis revealed that both defoliation and fertilizer management significantly affected species composition. The response obtained by individual species was explicable largely by their comparative biology.

Notes: Abstract. The water contents of a restored and an undisturbed soil were monitored over two ‘dry’ growing seasons in order to examine the differences in crop water availability from different horizons. Bulk density was approximately 10% greater in the topsoil of restored land than in undisturbed land, and the water holding capacity was less, probably because there was less organic matter. In the subsoil a major problem was the inability of the soil to allow winter rainfall to recharge the water reserves. Bulk density and penetration resistance were greater in the restored subsoil than in the undisturbed subsoil. Increases in penetration resistance on drying may have restricted rooting activity, especially in the restored subsoil.Ripping of the subsoil to a depth greater than the usual 0.5 m, possibly early in the year in a grass crop to allow new root growth to exploit the cracks, may increase water availability for future dry seasons.

Notes: The growth of grass and clover components in mixed swards on a site restored after opencast coal mining and an undisturbed control site were compared. Soil nitrogen supply was reduced at the restored site. This inhibited grass growth but was beneficial for the clover component.Growth at the restored site was also inhibited by a compacted subsoil, which reduced available soil water content and impeded access to available soil water. This inhibited crop production from the middle of the second silage crop onwards. In 1989 this was associated with the soil at the restored site reaching permanent wilting point at 40cm. In 1990 this effect was associated with the restored site soil reaching permanent wilting point at 70cm. These drought effects reduced clover growing point population and stolon mass. Grass tiller populations were unaffected.

Notes: The thermal stability of ∼50 nm CoSi2 and TiSi2 thin films after BF2+ implantation was investigated. The electrical characteristics of silicide films were evaluated after high temperature annealing as a function of implanted BF2+ energy. It was observed that implantation with a projected range near the silicide/silicon interface produced the most stable films. The silicide/silicon interface morphology was investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy, where with appropriate BF2 implantation conditions, smoother interfaces were seen after high temperature annealing. The stabilizing effect is attributed to fluorine segregation into the silicide grain boundaries and at the silicide/silicon interface.
