Notes: Summary This report concerns a young woman, whose stained blood films revealed a hypochromic and microcytic red cell morphology. It could be shown by haemoglobin analysis that this atypical blood film was due to a double heterozygote disorder of haemoglobin D (Hb D) andβ-thalassaemia. The thalassaemia trait was inherited from her father and the Hb D from her mother. This is the first observation of this rate disorder in a German family. Comparable cases reported in the literature are mentioned.

Notes: Abstract The calanoid copepods Calanus hyperboreus and C. finmarchicus were investigated in view of their lipid and wax ester content and their fatty acid and alcohol composition. Analyses were performed in females and copepodid stages V and IV from the Fram Strait region between Greenland and Spitsbergen in 1984. This region offers different food conditions like diatom blooms in the North East Water Polynya, food shortage in areas with very close ice cover, high phytoplankton biomass in the marginal ice zone and lower biomass in the open Atlantic water. Lipids contained generally more than 70% wax esters. Highest levels were found in C. hyperboreus with more than 90%. This percentage was not very variable, in spite of large differences in dry weight and lipid content. Copepods with particularly high weight and lipid content were found in the North East Water Polynya. The lightest individuals were found under the pack ice. Lipid proportions per unit dry weight were higher in C. hyperboreus than in C. finmarchicus, whose lowest values were found in the open Atlantic water. Spatial variability in fatty acid composition was much higher than in alcohol composition. The principle alcohols, 20:1 and 22:1, generally accounting for more than 80% of total alcohols. In the North East Water Polynya, the predominant monounsaturated fatty acid was 16:1, while under the ice 20:1 and 22:1 dominated. In the marginal ice zone and in the open water, the 18:4 acid reached percentages up to 30% of total fatty acids. These changes were related to the different food conditions. C. hyperboreus appears to be best adapted to the cold water and unfavourable conditions of polar regions because of its high lipid and wax ester store with long-chain wax esters of high calorific value.

Notes: Abstract A 16-year-old boy is described who had a relapse of a phaeochromocytoma 6 years after an initially successful tumour resection. The relapse was suspected after routine testing of urinary catecholamine excretion and was confirmed by scintigraphy with 123I-meta-iodobenzylguanidine, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The plasma norepinephrine level was 3082 pg/ml (normal 〈500 pg/ml); the plasma epinephrine level was in the normal range. Surprisingly, our patient had no symptoms, including hypertension. The density of the α- and β-adrenoceptors on circulating blood cells was decreased. Postoperatively the plasma catecholamine levels were in the normal range. Three months after surgery the adrenoceptor density was almost normal. We conclude that the absence of clinical symptoms was probably due to desensitization of the adrenoceptors. After a successful operation to treat phaeochromocytoma, long-term monitoring of catecholamines is necessary to rule out an asymptomatic relapse.

Notes: Abstract The total lipid and wax ester content as well as the fatty acid and alcohol composition of all copepodid stages and adults of Calanus finmarchicus s.l. were investigated at different locations in the North Sea in 1983 and 1984. Total lipid and the wax ester proportion increased exponentially until Copepodid V. The females were sometimes lower in lipids than the Stage V. The wax ester proportion reached about 90% of total lipids in males and Copepodid V and up to 40% in Copepodid I. The major fatty acids were 16:0, 20:5, and 22:6 and the major fatty alcohols were 16:0, 20:1 and 22:1. At one station the 18:4 acid became one of the dominant acids, because of a Phaeocystis sp. bloom, indicating that the fatty acids of the diet are incorporated mostly unchanged into the lipids of the copepods. The other main fatty acids 20:1 and 22:1 are probably synthesized de novo, serving as precursors for the principal alcohols 20:1 and 22:1. Their levels decreased in the younger stages due to increases in 16:0 alcohol. The fatty alcohol-forming enzyme seems to be specific for saturated and monounsaturated acids, which may be synthesized de novo or derived from diet.

Notes: Abstract K+ concentrations were measured with K+ sensitive liquid ion exchanger microelectrodes in situ and in vitro in the mucus layer at the luminal cell surface of the proximal and the distal colon in guinea pig. In a first series of experiments K+ concentrations were increased in the luminal solution from 0 to 70 mmol·l−1; the serosal K+ concentrations were kept in vitro at 5.4 mmol·l−1. In the proximal colon mean K+ concentration in the microclimate was in vitro 7.9±3.5 mmol·l−1, and independent from mucosal concentrations. In the distal colon in vitro, and in situ in the proximal as well as in the distal colon, K+ concentrations in the microclimate were increased slightly when K+ concentrations were elevated in the luminal solution up to 70 mmol·l−1. In a second series of in vitro studies K+ concentrations were also altered in the serosal fluid. In the proximal and in the distal colon K+ concentrations increased linearily with elevated K+ concentrations in the serosal solutions. A temporarily interrupted mucosal blood flow resulted in a significant increase in the K+ concentration in the microclimate. A paracellular shunt pathway and a high preepithelial diffusion barrier for K+ would explain the observed K+ concentrations in the microclimate at the luminal cell surface.

Notes: Abstract An RNA polymerase III transcript, 7SK nuclear RNA, was found to bear sequence homology to the B2 class of highly repeated elements in the mouse genome. Northern blot hybridizations between the small RNAs and two B2 clones showed that only one of them (p49C8) hybridized to 7SK RNA. Both clones, however, hybridized to 4.5SI RNA as well as to a third class of nuclear RNA transcripts around 170 nucleotides long, whose levels were found to be greatly increased upon induction of transformation in a mouse 3T3 cell line transformed with a temperature-sensitive mutant of simian virus 40.
