Notes: Summary The prognosis of bile duct cancer is still poor. Curative surgical therapy is possible in only 10%–20% of cases. Palliative effects of chemotherapy and radiation are small. Newer palliative techniques like iridium 192 wire radiation or hepatic artery infusion of chemotherapeutic agents seem to be more effective. Another new form of palliative local chemotherapy, intrabiliary application of 5-fluorouracil, is described. A 67-year-old woman with an adenocarcinoma of the left and common hepatic ducts received symptomatic therapy by an external biliaray drainage for 20 months. In the following 3 weeks the amount of drained bile diminished and finally stopped, while icterus occurred. Catheter cholangiography showed a right catheter position, the known obstruction of the common hepatic duct and the left bile duct, and a diffuse right-sided peripheral bile duct occlusion, regarded as multifocal tumor spreading. Intraductal application of 5-fluorouracil via the PTCD tube, 125–375 mg twice a week, effected a rising bile secretion after a few days, to a final volume of 1,000 ml/day. An X-ray control 34 days after start of the therapy showed a nearly complete reopening of the formerly occluded peripheral bile duct system and a filiform reopening of the common hepatic duct with sufficient flowing off into the common bile duct and the duodenum. Certain side effects of this therapy were not noticed. After successful reopening of malignant bile tract occlusion, other palliative therapeutic techniques like internal bile drainage or iridium 192 wire radiation can be applied.

Notes: Pterygium inversum unguis is a nail abnormality in which the distal aspect of the nail bed/hyponychium is adherent to the ventral surface of the nail plate, resulting in obliteration of the distal groove. We present a 50-year-old man who developed this abnormality on his right fingers and toes after a stroke that resulted in paresis of his right side. Unusual features of this case include the association with a neurologic disorder, assymetric distribution, involvement of toes as well as fingers, and occurrence in the male gender.

Notes: Summary Resting cells of several species of microorganisms removed neptunium (Np) from an aqueous solution. Concentrations of up to 15 mg Np per g cells (dry weight) were obtained. Maximum uptake byMicrococcus luteus occurred in less than 10 min.

Notes: [Auszug] We make the case that the cosmic-ray particles that produce cosmic γ-rays in the 100-MeV region can penetrate most of the dense clouds of gas that seem to contain much of the mass of gas in the Galaxy. We determine a probable form for cosmic-ray intensity as a function of Galactic position ...

Notes: Summary The body temperature (T b) of free-living alpine marmots rose with activity; the higher the effective environmental temperature (T e), the higher the rise. Maximum T bof 40° C was reached at the time of greatest activity in late afternoon or evening. The activity pattern was strongly influenced by the microclimate. Up to an T eof 25° C the animals spent more time above ground and were more active the higher T ewas, but above 25° C this trend was reversed, and the animals withdrew increasingly into their burrows. On warm days the activity pattern was therefore bimodal and above ground presence was reduced, in contrast to cool days. Hence behavioural thermoregulation limits the available time for above ground activity on days with high T ein this strictly diurnal species. We suggest that the alpine marmots' preference for south oriented slopes is due to the better conditions for hibernation there, the microclimate during summer is more favourable on northerly slopes. Thermoregulatory constraints could also keep alpine marmots away from lower elevations.

Notes: Abstract We use photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) to monitor the occurrence of fatigue cracks in metal specimens. Using piezoelectric detection, it is possible to estimate their depth in the extreme near-field of the acoustic wave by measuring the signal-width in a given scan. We also discuss shortly our experimental apparatus and the parameters relevant to the improvement of the signal to noise ratio leading to an acceptable scanning speed.

Notes: Intracellular glutathione (GSH) concentrations were titrated in Chinese hamster ovary cells by exposure to various concentrations of diethylmaleate (DEM). The various steady state levels of GSH obtained were maintained throughout the experimental time course. Cells were incubated at 42° after DEM addition in order to produce thermal dose response curves using colony formation as the end point. The slope of the dose response curve was subsequently determined and compared to the intracellular GSH concentration. This comparison indicated Chinese hamster ovary cells contain multiple reservoirs of GSH which in turn regulate thermal toxicity in a stepwise manner. Removal of 50% or less of the GSH did not affect thermal sensitivity. A small increase in sensitivity occured when 50 to 80% of the GSH was removed. Removal of greater than 80% of the GSH increased thermal toxicity significantly. The facts that 10 and 20 µM DEM produce extensive GSH depletion and only small changes in survival imply that a threshold concentration of GSH must be removed before thermal toxicity is affected.

Notes: 2,5-Dimethyl-2,4-hexadiene (1) dimerizes under Lewis acid catalysis or in the presence of tris(4-bromophenyl)aminium hexachlorostibanate (4) mainly to give exo-3-isopropenyl-exo-6-isopropyl-1,endo-2,4,4-tetramethylbicyclo[3.1.0]hexane (2). Small amounts of the acyclic dimer 2,5,7,7,10-pentamethyl-2,4,8-undecatriene (3) and traces of other unidentified dimeric and trimeric products are formed as well. The latter are the only products in the presence of Brønsted acids, whereas 2 and 3 were not detected under these conditions. The structural assignment of 2 has been carried out by means of 2D-INADEQUATE, -HETCOR, and -COSY spectra.
