Notes: Summary We relate causes of mortality of snowshoe hares to density of hares over an 8-year period that included a peak in numbers. We then use simulation modeling to examine whether these density-dependent relationships could produce changes in hare density similar to those observed in our study are in Yukon, Canada. Predation during winter was the largest source of mortality for snowshoe hares at Kluane, Yukon during 1978–84. There was a one-year lag in the response of winter predation mortality rate to hare density. There was a two-year lag in the response of winter mortality not caused by predators to hare density. A simple simulation model with density-dependent predation produced 8–11 year cycles only within a narrow range of parameters that are inconsistent with data from the Kluane region. However, a simulation model that predicted winter mortality rates using a delayed density-dependent numerical response and a Type II functional response by predators, produced 8–11 year cycles within the range of parameter values measured in our study. Yet another simulation model that predicted both summer and winter mortality rates using a delayed density-dependent numerical response and a Type II functional response by predators, did not produce 8–11 year cycles within the range of parameter values measured in our study. Lack of data on juvenile mortality may be one reason for this result.

Notes: Abstract Residues of the DDT group, particularlyp,p′-DDT (DDT) were detected in high or unusual amounts in some wildlife samples collected in fruit orchards near Wenatchee, Washington from 1979 to 1983. Samples of birds containedp,p′-DDE (DDE) and DDT in ratios (DDE:DDT) as low as 2.6:1 in eggs and 1.9:1 in brains. An unexpectedly high number (about 50%) of some samples, such as fat of adult waterfowl, contained unusually low DDE:DDT ratios (≤10:l). At the lower sensitivity level (0.01 μg/g), 96% of the samples contained DDE and 46% contained DDT. From about 1946 to 1970, technical DDT was applied at very high rates to orchards in Washington (56 to 73 kg/ha/yr); some areas probably received 5≥1000 kg/ha over this period. Considerable wildlife mortality from DDT was documented during the period of intensive use, but only one DDT-related mortality was recorded during this study. The possible origin of the residues is discussed. Occurrence of DDT and its metabolites in resident wildlife and its food indicates continuing contamination that probably originates largely from past legal applications in the orchard system.

Notes: Abstract Early and late mortality of 313 ICU patients and the quality of life of 118 long term ICU survivors was studied to assess the effectiveness of intensive care for critically ill patients. The survival rate at discharge from the ICU was 76%, falling to 61% at 6 months and to 58% at 1 year. A simplified acute physiology score (SAPS) was recorded on ICU admission, as well as age, length of ICU-stay and the number of complications during intensive care. Information on housing, drug use, hospital admissions, physical condition and functional status 2 years after ICU discharge was collected by means of a questionnaire. No changes in housing occurred, but drug use and the number of hospital admissions were significantly increased. In 21% of the patients a deteriorated physical condition was found, 77% remained unchanged and 2% were improved 2 years after ICU discharge, compared to their condition prior to the acute illness. Major functional impairment was found in 38% of the patients. Although the longterm physical condition and functional status correlated with SAPS and age on ICU admission, the best indicator for quality of life after intensive care proved to be the health status prior to the acute illness.

Notes: Abstract An apparent thermal conductivity for inhomogeneous materials is widely used. In this paper it is demonstrated that the apparent thermal conductivity for stationary heat conduction is not sufficient to describe the transient heat response of an inhomogeneous medium. In the geometry we used the heat transfer is estimated too high when the stationary thermal conductivity is employed. A numerical solution of the equation of thermal diffusion has been used to check several approximations. For short and for long times a separate approximate analytic expression can be used.

Notes: Abstract Yrast states with spins as high as 22 ħ have been identified in76Kr with the reactions58Ni(24Mg,α2p) at 110 MeV and40Ca (40Ca, 4p) at 155 MeV. Simultaneous band crossings due to g9/2 proton and neutron quasiparticles have been observed in the frequency range 0.60≦ħω≦0.75 MeV. The moment of inertia increases rapidly at the crossing frequency. The systematics of proton and neutron alignments in the Kr isotopes are discussed.

Notes: Abstract: Using the technique of transstriatal dialysis in halothane-anesthetized rats, we have studied the effects of intrastriatally infused N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), kainate, and quisqualate on the liberation of endogenous striatal dopamine. The striatal infusion of NMDA (10-3-10-2M) or kainate (10-4-10-2M) but not of quisqualate (up to 10-2M) for one 20-min fraction provoked a dramatic increase in striatal dopamine efflux up to a maximum of 1,200 and 3,400% of basal levels for NMDA and kainate, respectively. NMDA (10-3M) evoked liberation of striatal dopamine was totally blocked by coinfusion of 2-amino-5-phosphonovalerate (2-APV; 5 × 10-4M) and by the systemic injection of phencyclidine (3 mg/kg i.p.). The effects of NMDA (10-3M) were also totally antagonized in a dose-dependent manner by the striatal coinfusion of atropine (10-7-10-4M), and abolished in rats that had received bilateral striatal ibotenate lesions (10μg/1μl) 1 week prior to implantation of the dialysis fiber. The striatal infusion of tetrodotoxin (10-6M) reduced basal dopamine efflux by 60–70% and abolished the NMDA (10-3M)-evoked liberation of striatal dopamine. The effects of kainate (10-3M) on striatal dopamine efflux were only partially reduced by doses of 2-APV or atropine that totally blocked the NMDA response, and were also partially resistant to tetrodotoxin. The intrastriatal infusion of carbachol (10-3M) for one 20-min fraction was without effect on striatal dopamine efflux; 10-2M carbachol produced a 50% increase in dopamine release in the fraction following carbachol application. The present results indicate that the effects of NMDA on striatal dopamine release are likely to be mediated via an active cholinergic striatal neuron which seems to play a permissive rather than an active role in this effect. The effects of kainate may involve a direct action on dopa-minergic terminals as well as activation of polysynaptic pathways or liberation of an endogenous NMDA receptor agonist.

Notes: Developmental changes in protein N-glycosylation activity have been studied using cultures of dissociated fetal rat brain cells as an in vitro model system. These cultures undergo an initial phase of neurite outgrowth and cell proliferation (4–6 days in culture), followed by a period of cellular differentiation. N-Glycosylation activity has been measured by assaying the incorporation of [2-3H]-mannose into dolichol-linked oligosaccharides and glyco-protein over a period of 1–25 days in culture. This study revealed a marked induction of N-glycosylation activity beginning at approximately 1 week of culture. [2-3H]-Mannose incorporation into the oligosaccharide-lipid intermediate fraction and glycoprotein reached maximal values between 12 and 16 days of culture and declined thereafter. The major dolichol-linked oligosaccharide labeled by the brain cell cultures was shown to be Glc3Man9GlcNAc2 by HPLC analysis. Parallel incorporation studies with [3H]leucine showed that the increase in protein N-glycosylation was relatively higher than a concurrent increase in cellular protein synthesis observed during the induction period. Maximal labeling of glycoprotein corresponded to the period of glial differentiation, as indicated by a sharp rise in the marker enzymes, 2′,3′-cyclic nucleotide 3′-phosphohydrolase (an oligodendroglial marker) and glutamine synthetase (an astroglial marker). The results describe a developmental activation of the N-glycosylation pathway and suggest a possible relationship between N-linked glycoprotein assembly and the growth and differentiation of glial cells.
