Notes: Abstract Ion-exchange beads with different densities of fixed charges were prepared by sulfoethylation of dextran gel beads. The relative permittivities and the electrical conductivities of the ion-exchange beads in a sodium form were evaluated by a dielectric technique consisting of the following two procedures proposed in a previous study (2): (a) Dielectric measurements for densely packed sediments of the ion-exchange beads; (b) Analysis of the observed dielectric relaxations by means of a theoretical equation of interfacial polarization for suspensions of spherical particles. The deduced permittivities of the ionexchange beads in equilibrium with water were about 60, which is lower than those of outer aqueous phases. The deduced conductirities were of the order of 1 to 10 mS cm−1 and were increased reasonably with the fixed charge density. Closer consideration on these deduced values indicates that no specific interaction exists between the counter ions and the fixed charges irrespective of changes in fixed charge density and temperature.

Notes: Abstract We assessed the usefulness of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) for differentiating types of degenerative diseases in children. The findings of BAEPs were abnormal in one out of two with polioencephalopathies and in seven of the eight with leukoencephalopathies, showing prolonged interpeak latencies of waves I–III, I–V or disappearance of wave components. On the other hand, normal responses were observed in four with corencephalopathies and one with spinocerebellopathy. The serial BAEPs in eight patients had deteriorated with progression of the clinical symptoms. These data on 16 children suggest that BAEPs are indeed a useful tool for monitoring pathophysiologic processes of neurodegenerative diseases.

Notes: Abstract A theoretical formula of dielectric relaxation in a form of complex relative permittivity is derived for dilute suspensions of spherical particles of two kinds on the basis of the Maxwell-Wagner theory of interfacial polarization. Another theoretical formula is derived further for concentrated suspensions of spheres of two kinds on condition that the formula derived above holds for the infinitesimally increasing process in concentration of the dispersed spheres. Furthermore a theoretical formula is derived for concentrated suspensions of shelled spheres of two kinds as the extension of the formula for concentrated suspensions. By use of the theoretical formulas proposed, values of the permittivities and the conductivities of the two-component suspensions were calculated for some examples with different sets of phase parameters. Results of the numerical calculation demonstrates dielectric relaxation profiles full of variety and characteristic of the suspensions containing two kinds of spheres covered with or without shells.

Notes: Summary Starting from silica gel with a purity of 99.999%, octadecyl-(ODS), octyl-(C8) and propyl-(C3) bonded silica gels were synthesized, and end-capped by trimethyl groups. The pore size was 150 Å and the specific surface area was 320 m2/g. The ODS and C8 silica gels were stable in both acidic and basic solutions. The selectivity of these bonded-silica gels was examined from the difference of the retention behavior of alkanes (Al−Al), alkylbenzenes (Ph−Al), alkylalcohols (Al−OH) and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in aqueous acetonitrile. On these packings the log k′ values decreased in the order Al−Al〉Ph−Al〉PAH〉Al−OH. Furthermore, the chromatographic behavior of these compounds was measured on polymer-coated octadecyl-bonded silica gel (CAP) and octadecyl-bonded vinyl alcohol copolymer gel (ODP). The selectivity was verified from the value of R* of these compounds: $$R = R_v + R^* $$ where R is the retention time, and Rv is the retention time of an alkane having the same Van der Waals volume as the analyte. The R* values indicated that this ODS had more selectivity than C8 and C3, however R* on C8 showed a very good correlation with R* on C3. Their retention behavior on CAP was similar to that of ODS, however, their capacity ratios measured on CAP were smaller than those on ODS. The ODP has selectivity for the retention of aromatic compounds, because PAHs were retained strongly on this column.

Notes: A microwave-induced plasma emission spectrophotometric detector (MIPD) was used as an element-specific detector for capillary column gas chromatography. The atmospheric pressure microwave helium plasma generated with an original device called a SURFATRON was used as an atomization and excitation source. Combining a photodiode array spectrophotometer with the above system made the emission spectrophotometric detector very powerful. A wide range of spectra could be instantly monitored without any mechanical device. However, the spectrum of atmospheric helium emission plasma was complicated by the presence of air around the plasma discharge. An on-line background correction scheme was developed to handle such complicated spectra.
