    Notes: Abstract— A comparison was made at room temperature of the fatigue sequence in Monel K 500 (N05500), both between the different states of solution heat treated, aged, and overaged, and with nickel that had been studied previously. The test mode was reversed bending and monitoring was by Nomarski interference contrast microscopy, in conjunction with sequential microhardness measurements. It was found that variations in Monel between the heat treated states were minor in comparison to differences with nickel. In Monel, the fatigue resistance was relatively poor because of ready intergranular, as well as transgranular, cracking. To achieve a significant life, the stress level had to be kept well below the yield strength, low enough to delay the onset of visible slip, for cracking would follow promptly. This meant that, in contrast to nickel, stress levels high enough to invoke strain hardening and obvious secondary slip led to exceedingly short lives. Also, inclusions mattered, slip occurring preferentially in their vicinity.

    Notes: Abstract We present 1-D eddy diffusion model calculations of the distributions of propane and acetone in the atmosphere for continental conditions. The magnitude of the surface seasonal variation in propane mixing ratios that we obtain is in general agreement with measurements at the surface and in the free troposphere. A comparison of the absolute values of the model with propane measurements suggests that a larger surface flux than we have used may be more appropriate for continental conditions. The acetone model results for summer conditions that we obtain are also in reasonable accord with measurements. However, we find serious disagreement between the model winter profiles of acetone and the measurements at the tropopause and in the lower stratosphere. The measured values are lower than the model values at 45° N by a factor of 7–30. In addition, it is also surprising that, given the relatively long lifetime of acetone, free tropospheric values of acetone more representative of surface values have not been measured. The results simulating the decay of elevated levels of propane in the upper troposphere caused by rapid convective transport of boundary layer air indicate that propane will be primarily dispersed by transport rather than destroyed photochemically. Thus, the impact on acetone and PAN is minimal.

    Notes: Abstract Growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on non-fermentable medium was more sensitive to inhibition by vanadate than growth of fermentable medium. The frequency of petite mutants increased in cultures grown for 18 hours in fermentable medium containing vanadate. However, oxygen uptake markedly increased in yeast cultures grown in the presence of vanadate, a similar effect being produced by phosphate. It was also found that oligomycin toxicity was relieved by vanadate. These results suggest that vanadate may interact with the mitochondria of S. cerevisiae.

    Notes: The relationships between equilibrium melting temperatures (Tm*) and crystalline morphology of poly[3,3bis(ethoxymethyl)oxetane], (polyBEMO), poly[3,3-bis (azidomethyl)oxetane], (polyBAMO), and poly(ethylene oxide), (PEO), were characterized. The Hoffman-Weeks extrapolation procedure led to Tm* values of 92, 102, and 69°C for these three polymers, respectively. The gross morphologies of polyBEMO, polyBAMO, and PEO were studied as a function of melt-liquid temperature (Ti) and isothermal crystallization temperature (Tc) by visible light microscopy. Spherulitic morphologies were observed for polyBEMO, polyBAMO, and PEO when Ti was above Tm*, while nonspherulitic (hedritic) morphologies were observed at Tls below Tm*. Mixed morphologies were observed when Tl was approximately equal to Tm*.

    Notes: Two crystal modifications have been found for poly(3,3-bisethoxymethyl oxetane) [poly- (BEMO)] by wide-angle x-ray powder diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry, while only one modification has been found for poly(3,3-bisazidomethyl oxetane) [poly(BAMO)]. Melting temperatures for the two polymers were nearly the same, varying from about 70 to about 90°C depending on the thermal treatment; higher crystallization temperatures resulted in higher melting temperatures. The equilibrium melting temperature T*m was found to be 125 and 128°C for poly(BEMO) and poly(BAMO), respectively, by using the Hoffman-Weeks extrapolation procedure. Measurement of the melting-point depression of Poly(BEMO) and poly(BAMO) in dibutyl phthalate yielded enthalpy of fusion values of 2.25 and 12.8 kcal/mol, respectively. The percent crystallinity for poly(BEMO) and poly(BAMO), respectively, was calculated to be 55-60 and 13-30% based on DSC and x-ray analysis.
