Notes: Laser oscillation has been observed on the copper 510.6-nm (2P3/2-2D5/2) transition. A YAG laser is used to produce the metal vapor by irradiating a metal plate, and the metal atoms are excited by pulsed discharge.

Notes: The orientation of YBa2Cu3O7−x thin films grown on (110) planes of SrTiO3 by activated reactive evaporation was investigated by means of reflection high-energy electron diffraction. The orientation of the films depended on the substrate temperature. The films with (110) planes parallel to the substrate surface grew in a narrow range of substrate temperatures around 530 °C, while the films with (103) planes parallel to the surface grew at temperatures above 600 °C. The change of the epitaxial orientation with the substrate temperature is discussed in terms of the temperature dependence of the lattice mismatch between YBa2Cu3O7−x and SrTiO3.

Notes: Normal-metal/insulator/superconductor (NIS) junctions were fabricated using thin films of YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) or ErBa2Cu3O7−x. These were epitaxially grown on single-crystal SrTiO3 by the activated reactive evaporation method. For some NIS junctions prepared on SrTiO3 (110) substrates, we observed multipeaks in the differential conductance versus voltage curve. NIS junctions using single-crystal YBCO films on SrTiO3 (100) showed a set of peaks, from which we obtained a gap parameter of 11.5±1.5 meV at 4.4 K and a coupling constant of 3.2±0.4.

Notes: Summary We have evaluated the effect of serratiopeptidase (SER), a proteolytic enzyme, on the elasticity and viscosity of the nasal mucus in adult patients with chronic sinusitis. SER was administered in a dose of 30mg/day orally for 4 weeks. Nasal mucus was collected from the nasal cavities of each patient before (week 0) and 4 weeks after the start of the medication (week 4). The storage modulus (G′) and the dynamic viscosity (η′) of each specimen of nasal mucus were determined by an oscillating sphere magnetic rheometer at frequencies of 0.5, 1, 5, 10 and 20 Hz at a constant temperature of 25° C. The dynamic viscosity (η′) of the mucus at week 4 was significantly lower than that at week 0 (at frequencies of 5, 10 and 20 Hz). No significant differences were observed in the storage modulus (G′) between the mucus at week 0 and week 4. SER reduced the viscosity but not the elasticity of the nasal mucus. These findings are discussed in relation to mucociliary clearance.

Notes: Abstract This study examined the effect of local heating on the blood flow of the finger or forearm in male subjects in an environment of 35°C-40% (r.h.). One hand or forearm was immcrsed in a water bath the temperature of which (T w) was raised by 1°C every 10th min from 35° to 43°C, while the other hand or forearm was kept at a constantT w of 35°C. Blood-flow (BF) was measured by venous occlusion plethysmography, using temperature-compensated mercuryin-Silastic strain gauges. Finger BF in the heated hand was significantly lower than that in the control hand atT ws of 37°–41°C, mostly for the first few minutes of each heating period. Thereafter, finger BF in the heated hand gradually returned toward the previous values. AtT ws of 39°–40°C, liowever, finger BF in the heated hand remained lower than the control values for the entire period of heating. AtT ws of 42°–43°C, finger BF in the heated hand greatly increased after an initial transitory fall. In the forearm skin, however, no such vasoconstriction in response to local heating was observed. All this suggests that a rise in skin temperature to above the core temperature produces paradoxical vasoconstriction in the finger, which may be a mechanism to reduce heat gain through the hand heated locally at higher temperatures.

Notes: Summary A case of crossed total hemiatrophy (right side of the face, and left side of the trunk and left extremities) with a right precentral to central arteriovenous malformation is reported. The atrophy of trunk and extremities was well accounted for by the contralateral arteriovenous malformation, but a pathological early auditory response was the only brainstem sign possibly related to the facial atrophy.

Notes: Summary In the frog tongue, substance P(SP)-like immunoreactive fibers were consistently present in each fungiform papilla, which contained the gustatory apparatus. Numerous SP-like immunoreactive fibers were usually distributed in the periphery of the gustatory disc and formed a varicose meshwork among the ciliated cells encircling the gustatory disc. SP-like immunoreactive fibers were rarely evident inside the gustatory disc. The role of SP-containing fibers in the frog taste organ was discussed.

Notes: Summary To investigate the effects of the menstrual cycle and of exercise intensity on the relationship between finger blood flow (FBF) and esophageal temperature (Tes), we studied four women, aged 20–32 years.
