Description / Table of Contents: Contents For synchronous machines based on permanent magnet excitation and the transvers flux concept an analytical approach for field and force calculations is being described. One of the assumptions is a known trapezoidal wave form of the armature current, maintained by appropriate frequency inverter and terminal voltage. The analysis covers one and two-sided armature configurations as well as different configurations of the excitation (magnet) system of the rotor. Refinements of the analysis can be achieved by taking into account magnetic leakage components and saturation effects. Comparisons with the 3-dimensional FE-computation and with results from measurements are presented.

Notes: We have fabricated the first optical quality polymer films of aromatic ladder polymers having an unbroken conjugated backbone, and find third-order nonlinear susceptibilities two orders of magnitude larger than CS2. The nonlinearities respond in less than 6 ps. Although we find their space symmetry to agree with that expected for a nonresonant electronic nonlinearity, the mechanism may well depend on lattice motion. The polymers are stable and rugged at room temperature. We also develop and analyze a simple form of degenerate four-wave mixing for the measurements, finding expressions for the effects of uncertainties in the spatial and temporal pulse profiles.

Notes: Abstract Issues in the design and implementation of a real-time Knowledge-Based Controller (KBC) have been investigated. The design objective of such a controller is to maintain overall system stability and performance not only during normal, but also contingency, conditions. A general structure for such controllers is proposed. It consists of four major components: a knowledge base, a real-time inference engine, information processing algorithms, and a distributed controller. The functions of each individual component, as well as the relationship among them, are considered. The proposed design methodology is applied to synthesize a real-time knowledge-based controller for a hydraulic turbine governor.

Notes: Abstract Collections of macrophytic algae from the subtidal and lower intertidal regions were processed to observe the diatom epiphytes both by light and scanning electron microscopy. For the purpose of comparison some samples of the sub-ice assemblage were also collected and processed similarly. The standing crop of epiphytes was high throughout the winter as well as the summer but the community composition varied depending upon the collection site and the morphology of the host macrophyte. The genus Cocconeis was ubiquitous achieving densities approaching 105 cells cm−2 and surpassed only by Nitzchiawith a density of twice that amount on one sample.

Notes: An elastoplastic constitutive model for concrete subjected to cyclic loading conditions is presented. The model is an extension of a recently proposed constitutive concept.7 An initial active loading process is described, using the conventional framework of the rate independent theory of plasticity. An appropriate hardening/softening parameter is introduced which allows one to model the sensitivity of material characteristics to varying confining pressure, including a smooth transition from stable to unstable response. For stress histories that include stress reversals, the formulation invokes a set of neutral loading loci defining the conditions of the neutral state.8 The field of hardening moduli is specified through an appropriate interpolation rule which enables one to simulate adequately the effect of cyclic degradation of the material. The performance of the model is verified for some typical cyclic loading histories, and the results are compared with existing experimental data.
