    Notes: Summary Peripheral nerve meningiomas are exceedingly rare neoplasms of controversial origin; only four cases have been reported. Proposed origins of ectopic meningiomas include extradural trapping of arachnoid cells during embryogenesis, ectopic migration of arachnoid cell nests with the developing peripheral nerve, and metaplasia of mature peripheral nerve sheath cells or a common progenitor cell. In this report of a meningioma of the brachial plexus, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural examinations of the tumor matched all the criteria of a traditional meningioma but failed to clarify the origins of such neoplasms.

    Notes: Summary A melanotic ganglioglioma was biopsied in the pineal region of a 12-month-old girl who preoperatively underwent a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt for hydrocephalus and postoperatively received radiotherapy. The tumor was subtotally excised when the girl was 7 years and 4 months of age. Histologically, it demonstrated mature neurons in disorganized clusters and in well-differentiated cerebrum-like tissue, rare binucleated neurons, glia similar to normal gray matter, and bands of fibrous tissue containing heavily pigmented cells. Ultrastructurally, melanosomes of stages I to IV were identified in the pigmented cells. An origin involving retinal differentiation of the primitive pineal gland was not supported; the tumor was negative for both retinal S-antigen (MAbA9-C6) and cellular retinal-binding protein (CRALBP). This report demonstrates the ability of a cerebral neoplasm to contain neurons, glia, and melanin-containing cells; all of which are neuroectodermally derived.

    Notes: Summary Perineurial cell basement membrane (PCBM) thickening is a consistent feature in diabetes mellitus (DM) and may have relevance to the cause of DM neuropathy. In this ultrastructural morphometric study of identical twins discordant for DM, we found that the PCBM was significantly thicker in the dermal nerves of the diabetic twin. Following pancreas transplantation (PT) and a 2-year period of euglycemia, the PCBM in both dermal and sural nerves was significantly thinner. At the end of the 2nd year post-PT, the PCBM thickness in the dermal nerves of the diabetic was not significantly different from the non-DM twin. The correction of diabetic dysmetabolism may have played a role in the regression of PCBM. These data suggest that PCBM thickening may not be a permanent legacy of DM.

    Notes: Summary Localized hypertrophic neuropathy (hypertrophic mononeuropathy) is a rare benign condition that generally occurs in people under 40 years of age. Our immunocytochemical (S-100 protein) study of four new cases confirms previous observations that the cells forming the hypertrophic onion bulb are composed of perineurial cells. These observations and previously published illustrations, reveal a curious hyalinization of the outer perineurium of affected fascicles which suggests the absence of a perineurial barrier. Compartmentation (compartmentalization) of the endoneurium in hypertrophic mononeuropathy closely mimics the transient compartmentation which occurs in the distal nerve stumps of axotomized nerves, particularly in nerves in which re-innervation is prevented. Compartmentalization also can be produced by resection of the perineurial sheath. These findings suggest that hypertrophic mononeuropathy may be a reactive condition due to focal damage to the perineurial barrier.

    Notes: A pulsed electric discharge in a pulsed supersonic jet of N2 is found to produce high densities of metastable E3Σ+gN2. Subsequent laser irradiation of these metastables results in single-photon excitation to autoionizing states. Singly charged cations are detected by time-of-flight mass spectrometry or alternatively, ejected electrons are detected by TOF electron energy analysis. From both the laser excitation spectra and photoelectron spectra we have identified a number of autoionizing Rydberg states, including a triplet Rydberg series (np=8−26) 3Πu←E 3Σ+g converging to the ground state ion, the first member of an s-type triplet Rydberg series 3Σ+u←E converging to the B state of the ion and the lowest member of a d-type triplet Rydberg series 3Πu and 3Σ+u←E converging to the A state of the ion. Some of these transitions involve core excitations of a 3s Rydberg state configuration, resulting in a doubly excited electronic configuration [He(2sσg)2(2sσu)(2pπu)4 (2pσg)2(3sσg)]. Other transitions confirm that the E state is a mixture of a 3s Rydberg state with an X ionic core and a 3p Rydberg state with an A ionic core.

    Notes: We describe a normal incidence grating spectrometer for use in inverse photoemission studies of surfaces. We show that by operating in a configuration where the source and image are displaced from the Rowland Circle it is possible to construct a useful spectrometer that can be attached to any existing surface science chamber. The device covers the range 10–30 eV in photon energy with a typical energy resolution of 150 meV. Capable of operating with relatively low incident currents, this instrument will be an excellent choice for spin-polarized inverse photoemission experiments.

Airway smooth muscle from rabbits which had been pretreated in vivo, was studied in vitro. Tracheal rings, segmental bronchial rings, subsegmental bronchial spirals and lung parenchymal strips were all prepared from each rabbit lung.3. Although C5a des Arg produces hyper-responsiveness to histamine in vivo, which is inhibited by indomethacin, the airway smooth muscle responses in vitro from control, C5a des Arg and C5a des Arg plus indomethacin pretreated rabbits did not differ.4. The neutrophil counts in the tracheal and subsegmental bronchial specimens were increased in the C5a des Arg-treated group. Indomethacin significantly (P〈0.05) inhibited the neutrophil influx in the subsegmental bronchi.5. It is concluded that intrinsic smooth muscle function is unaltered following C5a des Arg-induced hyper-responsiveness in vivo.

    Notes: The quark propagator in massless quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is analyzed using the gauge technique. In both the Feynman and Landau gauges with a Pauli–Villars cutoff, a chirally symmetric solution is found, while a nonsymmetric solution appears at a critical coupling λc〉0. As the cutoff is removed, λc tends to 0 but the nonsymmetric solution vanishes in the continuum limit, so that chiral symmetry is then restored.
