Notes: The method proposed by Chang & Tang [Acta Cryst. (1988), A44, 1065-1072] for quantitative determination of phases of X-ray reflection from three-beam diffraction profiles is applied to an organic crystal of (2R, 3 R)-3-acetoxy-5,7-dihydroxy-6-methylflavanone, with a mosaic spread of 0.08°. The expression for the kinematical diffraction intensities is modified according to the kinematical theory of X-ray diffraction in the multibeam regime. Three-beam Umweganregung and Aufhellung diffraction profiles are analyzed. With the help of the modified intensity expression, the crystal symmetry imposed by the space group and the three-beam diffraction geometry, four acentric phases and fourteen centric phases of structure-factor triplets are determined.

Notes: The results of an investigation of the relationship between potentiodynamic anodic polarization behavior, composition, and microstructure for both sputtered and electroplated Ni-Fe thin-film alloys is described. The presence of high-temperature phases established by sputter deposition correlate directly with the compositional dependence of the passive current density. These results correlate exceptionally well with previous studies on the corrosion of Ni-Fe films under simulated atmospheric conditions. Electroplated films of the permalloy composition show significantly different passive behavior, as compared to sputter deposited films. Possible explanations for this anomaly are discussed.

Notes: Magnetic properties of multilayered Co/Cr films have been investigated by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and compared to magnetization studies carried out on a SQUID magnetometer. The interesting feature observed in most of the spectra was that along with an intense resonance corresponding to the uniform mode, several weak but well-defined peaks were observed at higher magnetic fields. The angular and temperature variations of the line positions indicates that these are due to cobalt atoms in the interface. In conjunction with static magnetization, the FMR studies of the main resonance lead us to believe that there may be long-range magnetic effects which result in additional anisotropy fields.

Notes: The dimensionality of Ni-Cr multilayered structures (MLS) was studied from the variation of the temperature dependence of the saturation magnetization Ms with the Ni layer thickness. Since NiCr alloys containing more than 12% Cr are nonmagnetic the thickness of the interfaces and pure Ni regions can be obtained from the measured value of Ms by modeling the MLS and determining the thickness of the pure Ni regions. Assuming that the pure Ni regions are isolated sufficiently to behave independently, comparison was made with several theories. It was found that the observed behavior is similar to that described by the theory of Davis and Keffer with a surface anisotropy energy of about 0.1 that of the exchange energy. This theory uses nonperiodic boundary conditions and assumes a surface anisotropy field which causes the partial pinning of the surface spins. The magnetization decrease calculated with this theory falls off less rapidly with film thickness than other theories. At high fields the magnetization and Curie temperatures of the MLS having 20 A(ring) or less of Ni is found to be field dependent. This is indicative that a considerable amount of the magnetic moments arise from itinerant d electrons.

Notes: Abstract Following PEG and high pH induced fusion of haploid tetrad protoplasts of a normal purple flowered variety of P. hybrida with cell suspension protoplasts of a nuclear albino mutant of the variety Blue Lace, triploid gametosomatic hybrid plants were recovered. These hybrids possessed an intermediate floral morphology and the expected chromosome number of 2n=3x=21. Selection was based on the fact that pollen tetrad protoplasts failed to divide in culture and that, following complementation to chlorophyll proficiency in the gametosomatic hybrid, the hybrid cells were visualised against a background of albino cells of the variety Blue Lace. The production of such gametosomatic hybrid plants in Petunia has shown that the concept of gametosomatic hybridisation can be extended to genera other than Nicotiana and that alternative selection strategies are available.

Notes: Abstract Following PEG and high pH induced fusion, intraspecific gametosomatic hybrid plants (pollen tetrad protoplasts of a normal purple flowered variety of P. hybrida fused with cell suspension protoplasts of a nuclear albino mutant of the variety Blue Lace) and interspecific gametosomatic hybrid plants (tetrad protoplasts (as above) fused with cell suspension protoplasts of a nuclear albino mutant of P. parviflora) were recovered. Hybrid plants of both combinations possessed an intermediate vegetative and floral morphology with chromosome numbers of 2n=3x=21 and 2n=3x=25 respectively. Hybrid cells were in both systems identified as green colonies against an albino background as a result of complementation to chlorophyll proficiency. Pollen tetrad protoplasts did not divide. The production of such plants at the intra- and interspecific level in Petunia has shown that the concept of gametosomatic hybridisation can be extended to genera other than Nicotiana. An alternative selection strategy is available to that as used earlier for Nicotiana.

Notes: Abstract The independent isomeric yield ratio of146La and84Br in the thermal neutron fission of235U is reported for the first time with the values of 0.058±0.017 and 0.62±0.20, respectively. the yields have been determined using a fast radiochemical separation technique followed by γ-spectroscopy. The deduced rms angular momentum of84Br is 5.9 ℏ from the statistical model analysis and the rms angular momentum of146La is found too low to be determined.

Notes: Summary The Escherichia coli enterotoxin STII gene is carried by Tn4521. The terminal repeats of Tn4521 are composed of IS2 sequences; however, neither repeat is a complete IS2. In order to determine how this seemingly defective transposon could transpose, mutations were generated within Tn4521 to determine the regions essential for transposition. The left terminal repeat region was found to be non-essential, but the right terminal repeat area was demonstrated to be crucial for transposition. Within the right terminal repeat area is an open reading frame (ORF), capable of encoding a 159 amino acid protein, which was shown by frameshift mutation analysis to be required for transposition. This protein may be the transposase of Tn4521. A pair of 11 bp repeat sequences flanking the ORF was also found to be important. The right 11 bp repeat is part of the left IS2 terminal sequence, and the left 11 bp repeat is located about 300 bp upstream from the right IS2 terminal sequence located within the right terminal repeat region. The results of this study suggest that Tn4521 is a functional transposon and that the sequence including this pair of 11 bp sequences plus the intervening sequence is a transposable element which may be responsible for Tn4521 transposition.
