Notizen: To study the organization of the plasminogen activator/plasminogen-plasmin (PA/PG-P) system in human epidermis we raised monoclonal antibodies with specificity for human plasminogen and plasmin (PG-P), Monoclonal antibody P2, which appeared most suitable for immunohistology, is a mouse monoclonal antibody of IgG1 subtype, specific for the precursor enzyme plasminogen and for the high molecular weight chain of the active enzyme, plasmin. Immunofluorescence analysis of normal human epidermis revealed that reactivity with P2 was confined to the basal cell layer. In psoriatic lesions, however, this regional organization was not found. Immunoreactivity in this case was scattered throughout all the hyperproliferating cell layers, which is taken as evidence for an altered distribution of PG-P in psoriatic lesions. In psoriasis other components of the PA/PG-P system have previously been found to be altered. In this context our findings add to the hypothesis that this system may be involved in the pathology or the pathogenesis of psoriatic lesions.

Notizen: Abstract The influence of adjuvant-induced arthritis of the rat on central and peripheral peptide neuroanatomy was investigated by immunohistochemistry. The most striking feature of arthritic rats was the differential intensification of neuronal proenkephalin- and prodynorphin-related staining in dorsal horn. Changes were ipsilateral in monoarthritic and bilateral in polyarthritic rats as compared to controls. Opioid responsive neurons were target of substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) fibers. Changes of SP and CGRP predominated in peripheral inflamed tissue and consisted of intensified immunostaining and an apparent sprouting of sensory fibers particularly around venules, in the epidermis and in areas infiltrated by immunocompetent cells. Opioid staining was absent from primary afferents but present in some immune cells of inflamed tissue. Endogenous antinociceptive opioids and pro-nociceptive/pro-inflammatory SP and CGRP may be crucial in the concerted response of the neuroimmune system to chronic inflammatory pain.

Notizen: Abstract Electric field induced conformational changes of bacteriorhodopsin were studied in six types of dried film (randomly and electrically oriented membranes of purple as well as cation-depleted blue bacteriorhodopsin) by measuring the frequency dependence of the optical absorbance change and the dielectric dispersion and absorption. For the purple bacteriorhodopsin the optical absorbance change induced by alternating rectangular electric fields of ±300 kV/cm altered the sign twice in the frequency range from 0.001 Hz to 100 kHz (around 0.03 Hz and 100 kHz), indicating that the electric field induced conformational change in these samples consists of, at least, three steps. Similarly, it was found for the blue bacteriorhodopsin that at least two steps are involved. In accord with optical measurements, the dielectric behaviour due to alternating sinusoidal electric fields of±6kV/cm in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 10 MHz showed two broad dispersion/absorption regions, one below 1 kHz and the other around 10–100 kHz. This suggests that the conformational change of bacteriorhodopsin is also reflected by its dielectrical properties and that it is partially induced at 6 kV/cm. Including previous results obtained by analysis of the action of DC fields on purple membrane films, a model for a field-induced cyclic reaction for purple as well as blue bacteriorhodopsin is proposed. In addition it was found that there are electrical interactions among purple membrane fragments in dried films.

Notizen: Abstract We compare several algorithms for the recognition of ordered and disordered images. As image sources we use waves of the Belousov-Zhabotinskii reaction coupled to convective motion in a petri dish. This device allows reversibly the generation of periodic (ordered) and aperiodic (disordered) patterns. The best match between the parametric description and the observations is obtained by an “autodifference function”. This function is computed by summing up intensity differences over all pairs of picture elements having a given distance on the picture plane. Then, the minimum of this function is determined upon variation of the distance. This algorithm is not only efficient for the recognition of order and disorder in “machine vision”, but also plausible in biological visual perception.

Notizen: Summary The 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) autoradiographic method is used to analyse the functional organization of the auditory forebrain nucleus, field L, in parrots, ducks, pigeons, gulls and passerine birds. The data are compared to earlier studies in domestic and Guinea fowls. In all birds field L is a trilaminar structure, placed at the border between neostriatum mediale and caudale. The orientation and spatial extent within the forebrain, however, shows considerable variability. There is a close spatial relationship between field L and the overlying hyperstriatum ventrale, which is a secondary auditory center receiving input from field L. Stimulation with tones produces stripe like patterns of metabolic activity which are continuous across the layers of field L and the hyperstriatum ventrale. In all birds the position of the stripes in both areas shift in medio-lateral direction with decreasing tone frequency. In none of the birds the representation of frequencies above 3 kHz cover more than 20% of the neuronal space. Thus, high frequency hearing is underrepresented. Frequencies between 500 Hz and 3 kHz with somewhat variable representation, cover most of the neuronal space. Fowls and pigeons appear to have a low frequency specialization in field L.

Notizen: Abstract A new version of the Al/Cl2 battery previously described was investigated. Instead of a graphite cylinder, a porous titanium plate was used as a chlorine electrode (cathode). The electrolyte used was a moderately acidic aqueous NaCl solution of pH 2 containing small amounts of In3+ and Hg2+ as additives. The cell had an open-circuit voltage of 2.6 V and delivered a maximum power of 19.8 W at 1.1 V with a Faradiac efficiency of 69%. The power density was 280 mW cm−2. A module consiting of 4 submodules connected in series, where each submodule contained 4 double-unit cells connected in parallel, had an open-circuit voltage of 10.6 V, a maximum power of 200 W and an energy density of 110 Whl−1.

Notizen: Abstract Al/Cl2 cells were built using a coaxial cylindrical cell arrangement with cylindrical porous graphite chlorine electrodes and 99.5% Al anodes (cylindrical rods). The electrolyte used was a slightly acidic aqueous NaCl solution containing small amounts of In3+ and Hg2+ as additives. The cells have an open-circuit voltage of 2.6 V and a maximum power density of 55mW cm−2 at a cell voltage of 1.6V with a Faradaic efficiency of 65–70%. A battery consisting of seven cells connected in parallel delivered a maximum power of about 15W.

Notizen: Abstract Long-term experiments have been undertaken to investigate the effects of various types of phosphorus fertilizers on yields, phosphorus uptake and fertilizer conversion in the soil. Optimum effects were obtained from water-soluble phosphate, whereas finely ground soft rock phosphate had little effect even with large amounts of phosphorus fertilizers and with a pH value of the soil of around 5.4. Partially decomposed and sintered phosphates performed well, as did NPK fertilizers (100% water soluble) and Thomas phosphate. The addition of large amounts of phosphorus fertilizers (to cereals, 26.4 kg/ha, to other crops 44 kg/ha) led to yields being increased by 7% and phosphorus extraction being increased by 11%. Smaller amounts of phosphorus fertilizers (13.2 and 17.6 kg/ha) did not have this effect. Increases in the amount of double-lactate-soluble phosphorus in the soil depended on the level of fertilization and did not differ significantly according to the type of phosphorus fertilizer used.
