Notes: Single crystals of the compounds R2Fe14B some 1–4 mm in size have been grown for a study of the anisotropy of the magnetization curves. These curves for crystals with R=Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Tm were measured at the Service National des Champs Intenses, Grenoble, between 4.2 and 275 K, with fields of 0–18 T being applied along the [100], [110], and [001] directions. Magnetization curves for all five compounds are analyzed in terms of the exchange and crystal field interactions (including terms up to sixth order, which may differ at 4 f and 4g sites) following the analysis previously developed for Nd2Fe14B. Molecular field coefficients representing the exchange interactions between R and Fe spins decrease from light to heavy R compounds as previously deduced from analysis of Curie temperatures. The CEF parameters are approximately the same across the series. In particular, the A20 terms are constant to within 10%.

Notes: Summary To determine the effect of neutralization of endogenous insulin upon the glucagon response to a rise and fall of glucose concentration, pancreata isolated from normal rats were perfused with either a potent anti-pork insulin guinea pig serum or a nonimmune guinea pig serum for 30 min. During this period glucose concentration was changed from 100 mg/dl to either 130, 180 or 80 mg/dl for 10 min. Antiserum perfusion at 100 mg/dl caused an approximately two-fold increase in glucagon which was not suppressed by an increase in glucose concentration to either 130 or 180 mg/dl, although glucagon secretion was significantly suppressed in the control experiments in which nonimmune serum was perfused. However, the 0.38±0.21 ng/min rise in glucagon secretion in response to a reduction in glucose concentration to 80 mg/dl in the control experiments was not abolished by antiserum perfusion but, instead, was enhanced (2.66±0.60 ng/min). These findings suggest that insulin may be required for glucose-mediated suppression of glucagon in the isolated pancreas of normal rats but not for stimulation of glucagon secretion by mild glucopenia. Alternatively, neutralization of insulin-mediated release-inhibition of glucagon secretion may simply have altered alpha cell responsiveness in a direction that desensitized it nonspecifically to suppression and sensitized it to stimulation.

Notes: Summary A geothermal and meteorological observation was carried out inside a hot tunnel (named Torigoe tunnel) penetrating through a volcanic zone in northeastern Japan, just after it has been penetrated. Rock wall surface temperature, some thermal properties of rock samples, temperature profile in slender pits drilled into the rock body, temperature of water flowing on the floor and the meteorological elements of air passing through the tunnel are contained in the observation. Introducing the coefficient of heat transfer determined from the Reynolds analogy for turbulent forced convection in a circular tube, the heat budget of the air-tunnel system is investigated with those observed data. The results show that the net sensible heat of 58.61 kW is drawn out from the tunnel by air passing through it and seems to be overcompensated by the net heat supply of 67.21 kW from the rock wall to air, while for the net latent heat removal of 101.56 kW by air the apparent undercompensation of 80.01 kW is found from the water flowing on the floor. Consideration is carried out on such excess and deficiency of heat supplies.
