Notes: Abstract For a Minkowski spacetime of dimension three, particles of arbitrary, real spin and intermediate (ϑ-) statistics, called ‘anyons’, are studied within the framework of relativistic quantum field theory. The localization properties of interpolating fields for anyons and the relation between the spin of anyons and their statistics are discussed on general grounds. A model of a quantum field theory exhibiting anyons is described. Our results might be relevant in connection with the fractional quantum Hall effect and two-dimensional models of high-T c superconductors.

Notes: Summary The presence of immunoreactive insulin in saliva and its relationship to plasma immunoreactive insulin was investigated in healthy subjects, newly diagnosed non-obese Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetic patients and obese non-diabetic subjects, basally and after an oral glucose tolerance test. The mean ± SEM fasting values of plasma and salivary immunoreactive insulin were significantly higher in diabetic patients and obese non-diabetic subjects than in normal volunteers (p〈0.05). During the glucose challenge, the increase of salivary insulin was related with that of plasma in the three groups of subjects, with a time lag in normal and obese subjects. In normal volunteers, plasma and salivary peak values were respectively 49.5 ± 13.4 μU/ml (p〈0.05 vs obese subjects) at 60 min and 12.0±3.3μU/min (p〈0.05 vs obese subjects) at 120 min; in diabetic patients, the values were 51.7 ± 5.6 μU/ml (p〈0.05 vs obese subjects) and 14.6±4.1 μU/min at 120 min; in obese subjects, the peak value for plasma insulin was 111.5±40.1 μU/ml at 90 min and for salivary insulin 15.6 ± 5.1 μU/min at 120 min. A positive linear relationship was shown between plasma and salivary insulin during the oral glucose tolerance test. The identity of salivary insulin was assessed by reversed-phase HPLC. We conclude that salivary immunoreactive insulin can be found in Type 2 diabetic patients and in obese non-diabetic subjects, as well as normal volunteers, that plasma and salivary insulin are related after a glucose load, and that differences exist in salivary insulin secretion patterns among the three groups of subjects.

Notes: Abstract We discuss the particle structure in the soliton sectors of massive lattice field theories by means of convergent cluster expansions. In several models we prove that the soliton field operator with lowest charge couples the vacuum to a stable one-particle state, in a suitable region of the coupling parameter space. Both local and stringlike solitons are analyzed. We also show that the mass of the local soliton equals the surface tension.

Notes: Abstract Quantization of solitons in terms of Euclidean region functional integrals is developed, and Osterwalder-Schrader reconstruction is extended to theories with topological solitons. The quantization method is applied to several lattice field theories with solitons, and the particle structure in the soliton sectors of such theories is analyzed. A construction of magnetic monopoles in the four-dimensional, compactU(1)-model, in the QED phase, is indicated as well.

Notes: Abstract We develop the quantization of topological solitons (vortices) in three-dimensional quantum field theory, in terms of the Euclidean region functional integral. We analyze in some detail the vortices of the abelian Higgs model. If a Chern-Simons term is added to the action, the vortices turn out to be “anyons,” i.e. particles with arbitrary real spin and intermediate (Θ) statistics. Localization properties of the interpolating field, scattering theory and spin-statistics connection of anyons are discussed. Such analysis might be relevant in connection with the fractional quantum Hall effect and two-dimensional models of HighT csuperconductors.
