    Notes: A new system is presented here, whose design is based on the electrochemical phenomena occurring on the platinum electrode that we examined before [P. Meunier and R. Popovic (unpublished)]. The architecture of the system is articulated around an IBM-PC computer which controls the polarization of the electrodes, the triggering of the flash lamp, and the acquisition of data. The potentiostat circuit and new electrode design improve the response of the electrode to a rise time of 4 ms and a decay time constant of 21 ms, without the signal being distorted by filters and without using the first derivative of the signal. This polarograph shows a 50-dB signal-to-noise ratio (0.3% error) during experiments with the motile algae Dunaliella tertiolecta. The determination of amplitudes of oxygen production is performed with third-order cubic spline interpolations, after subtraction of the current base line. The resulting accuracy and reproducibility will enable researchers to attain a higher degree of refinement in the quantification of properties of the oxygen evolving complex.

    Notes: The system presented here measures the fluorescence of plant samples in in vivo and in vitro automatically, calculating the principal photosynthetic parameters of the sample (evaluation of the F0 level of fluorescence, normalization of the fluorescence curve, rate of light trapped at the PSII complex, maximum quantum yield of photochemistry, average fluorescence induction time, and evaluation of the number of PSII reaction centers) as well as measuring heat dissipation kinetics. Because this system offers higher speed, more versatility, and greater accuracy (3%) than manual methods, it is a unique and valuable tool for laboratories involved in fluorescence research in the photosynthesis field. To demonstrate the use of this system and its superior performance, this article describes classic experiments carried out with the alga Dunaliella tertiolecta.

    Notes: Ga0.47In0.53As-InP multiquantum wells grown by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition on garnet (GGG=Gd3Ga5O12 with a=12.383 A(ring)) substrates are presented for the first time. The x-ray diffraction pattern shows that the orientation of the epitaxial layer is (111) while the underlying substrate orientation is (100). The photoluminescence at 77 K is due to the GaInAs layers.

    Notes: Summary Immunoreactivities to endogenous calcitonin, endogenous parathyroid hormone, endogenous estradiol and estradiol receptors were studied in osteoblasts from the calvaria of neonatal mice by immunocytochemistry with the use of ultrathin sections obtained by cryo-ultramicrotomy. Tissues were fixed in glutaraldehyde, postfixed in osmium tetroxide and frozen in liquid nitrogen. Estradiol and estradiol receptors could not be detected in osteoblasts, whereas calcitonin- and parathyroid hormone-like immunoreactivities were observed in this cell type. Calcitonin and parathyroid hormone had similar subcellular localizations: immunoreactivities were observed at the plasma-membrane level, in the cytoplasmic matrix, and in the nucleus. These results provide immunocytological evidence for: 1) the internalization of calcitonin and parathyroid hormone in osteoblasts; 2) a direct participation of calcitonin and parathyroid hormone in the regulation of osteoblasts; 3) the absence of estradiol receptors and estradiol in osteoblasts.
