    Notes: Abstract Pyruvate decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.1) from the ethanol producing bacterium Zymomonas mobilis was purified to homogeneity. This enzyme is an acidic protein with an isoelectric point of 4.87 and has an apparent molecular weight of 200,000±10,000. The enzyme showed a single band in sodium dodecylsulfate gel electrophoresis with a molecular weight of 56,500±4,000 which indicated that the enzyme consists of four probably identical subunits. The dissociation of the cofactors Mg2+ and thiamine pyrophosphate at pH 8.9 resulted in a total loss of enzyme activity which could be restored to 99.5% at pH 6.0 in the presence of both cofactors. For the apoenzyme the apparent K m values for Mg2+ and thiamine pyrophosphate were determined to be 24 μM and 1.28 μM. The apparent K m value for the substrate pyruvate was 0.4 mM. Antiserum prepared against this purified pyruvate decarboxylase failed to crossreact with cell extracts of the reportedly pyruvate decarboxylase positive bacteria Sarcina ventriculi, Erwinia amylovora, or Gluconobacter oxydans, or with cell extracts of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

    Notes: Abstract We carry out Monte Carlo simulations of the 4d SU(2) lattice gauge theory. The standard action and the Symanzik tree-improved action are used. Results for the string tension, glueball masses, and energy-momentum dispersion are reported. In case of the standard action our results are a finite size study extending previous investigations.

    Notes: Platelets from adolescents with minimal curve scoliosis (mcs) (7-18?) and healthy control subjects were examined for morphometry under the electron microscope and tested for calcium content and surface negative charge. These parameters have previously been found to be abnormal in severe idiopathic scoliosis (is) patients. Significantly more patients than control subjects showed deviations from normal in all tests. Two tests in particular, the average number of dense bodies per cell and an increased surface negative charge, were the most frequent abnormalities. In an attempt to assess the possibility of using platelet tests for prediction of curve progression, statistical comparisons were made and discriminant scores were generated for each patient. The results were compared with the clinical findings after a 2-to 3.5-year follow-up. The predictions proved to be incorrect although each of the five patients who had curve progression had some platelet abnormality. It is concluded that although platelet pathology does occur in early idiopathic scoliosis, it cannot be used as a prognostic indicator of curve progression.
