Notes: A very-high-sensitivity magnetometer is described in detail. The sensitivity of the apparatus is typically of the order of 10−9 A cm2/(Hz)1/2, so that changes in magnetic moment of 10−10 A cm2 can be detected. The magnetic moment can be calculated by simulation of the measurement system. An example of a hysteresis loop is shown. The size of the sample is determined by electron microscopy. The physical limits of the measurement system are worked out and discussed.

Notes: The response of cells to signalling molecules such as hormones, growth factors, and immune mediators that bind to cell-surface receptors depends in part on the density and distribution of the relevant receptors. We have developed methods to map the distribution of IgE receptors on RBL-2H3 mast cells at high resolution in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The key elements of our procedure are a new fixative that preserves receptor binding activity; a family of colloidal gold-conjugated probes that bind directly or indirectly to the IgE-receptor complex; an SEM with detectors for both secondary and backscattered electrons (to observe surface topography and gold particles, respectively); and an image processor that can average, digitize, and store these images. Topographical maps are generated by processing and superimposing the digitized images. The methods we describe can be applied to study the density and distribution of any membrane receptor that can be labeled with colloidal gold particles.

Description / Table of Contents: Aza- and Thia-2-germa(II)-indanes and Corresponding 2,2′-Spirobi(2-germaindanes)Reactions of dilithiated 1,2-phenylenediamine, N,N′-dimethylphenylenediamine, 1,2-dimercaptobenzene, 3,4-dimercaptotoluene and N-methyl-2-aminothiophenole with the dioxane complex of germanium dichloride give cyclic germylenes of the germaindane type (1-5). Corresponding 2,2′-spirobi(2-germaindanes) (6-9) are obtained as byproducts (by thermal treatment). The compounds are characterized by elemental analyses and by the mass- and n.m.r. (1H, 13C) spectra. A x-ray structure analysis has been performed for 7.
