Notes: Abstract Measurement of linear polarization of gamma-rays from nuclei oriented by hyperfine interaction at low temperatures using the3He/4He dilution refrigerator at the SERC Daresbury Laboratory is reported. Three different types of a Compton polarimeter were assembled using coaxial Ge(Li) detectors. The method was applied to192IrFe and60CoFe and a polarization detection efficiency curve and a figure of merit for each polarimeter were produced. As a result of combined directional distribution and linear polarization measurements multipole mixing ratios of several transitions in192Pt have been obtained and are compared with theoretical predictions.

Notes: Abstract The interacting boson model has been used to calculate the isotope shift in146–154Sm isotopes. Fitted model parameters have been used for calculation of the monopole strength parameters ρ(EO) and the branching ratios X(EO/E2) for150–154Sm. Consideration of the effective proton boson number as it reflects the Z=64 subshell closure, is shown to be insignificant in the present calculation.

Notes: Abstract The magnetic moment of116Sbg(t1/2=16 m, Iπ=3+) has been measured to be ¦μ¦=2.716(7)μN using the technique of NMR/ON on nuclei oriented at low temperatures in an iron host, on-line at the DOLIS-COLD facility, Daresbury. The measured moment can be well interpreted using empirical magnetic moments of neighbouring odd-A antimony and tin nuclei. The change in Iπ=3+ moments between116–120Sb is well accounted for by the variation in the odd neutron contribution, the odd proton acting as a spectator.

Notes: Abstract On-Line measurements of magnetic dipole moments of117–122I are interpreted using coupling of the odd particles to a deformed core. The results show interesting effects of g7/2, d5/2 orbital admixtures in the odd-A isotopes, which are close to spherical. The odd-odd isotopes118, 120I show clear examples of shape co-existence.

Notes: Abstract The introduction very briefly outlines the basic idea and experimental evidence to suggest that quarks may behave differently in nuclei and in indididual nucleons, with possible consequences for the calculation of nuclear magnetic dipole moments. After description of a calculation of moments made using the extreme model of total quark deconfinement (the MIT bag model) attention is focussed on experimental tests and the state of current evidence for more partial quark deconfinement. The arguments of Yamazaki which give an experimental basis for distinguishing quark deconfinement effects from, specifically, effects caused by pion echange currents, are given in more detail. The reasons underlying choice of nuclei in which meaningful tests may be possible are given. Early claims by Karl et al. to have demonstrated the existence of quark deconfinement in mass 3 nuclei are discussed. The current status of evidence for deconfinement based on orbital gfactor measurements in heavier nuclei is also summarised. Finally some examples are given of possible experiments using recently developed on-line facilities which may provide further tests of these ideas.

Notes: Abstract Calculations using the IBA-2 model code are presented for even-even tellurium isotopes118Te to124Te. Three parameter sets are used, two from previous work and a third chosen to give optimum fit to experimental positive parity energy levels and B(E2) ratios. With only two additional parameters, each with simple physical interpretation, the three parameter sets are shown to give excellent fits to the known collective negative parity states in these isotopes. Failure to fit the O 2 + ,O 3 + and 2 3 + levels suggests these may be 4p-2h intruder states, although their Behaviour with varying neutron number is not as clearly characteristic of such configurations as is found for the 2p-4h states in Cd isotopes.

Notes: Abstract The present status of γ-ray linear polarization measurements on oriented nuclei is discussed. The formalism used in the analysis of experimental data is summarized and complemented by formulae for γ-transitions with triple multipole mixing. A survey of the present technique of detection of γ-ray linear polarization, using Compton polarimeters, is given. Two important applications of γ-ray linear polarization measurements are briefly surveyed, namely, the measurement of theg-factors excited states and the investigation of time-reversal symmetry in atomic nuclei.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine field of CsFe has been measured to be (+)40.8(0.7)T, using the technique of on-line low temperature nuclear orientation. The time dependent relaxation of121Csm Fe has also been investigated using a new technique, giving a Korringa constant Ck of 0.059 (15) sK. From this, an effective relaxation time of 3.0 (0.8)s can be deduced for the short lived118Csm(T1/2=17s). This value has then been used to extract the magnetic moment of118Csm to be |μ|=5.4 (1.1) nm.

Notes: Abstract A facility for Nuclear Implantation into Cold On-Line Equipment (NICOLE) is being installed at the new on-line isotope separator ISOLDE 3 at CERN. The first on-line run was in the beginning of July 1988. The low temperature equipment has been successfully tested and first off-line experiments on various isotopes have been performed. NMR/ON has been done on vaious isotopes (Co, Xe, Pt, Au) in iron host. First experience with the top-loading dilution refrigertor (Oxford Instruments Limited) shows that it performs very well. The cooling power is 400 μW at 100 mK and 34 μW at 25 mK. The base temperature can be kept continuously well below 5 mK. NMR/ON can be performed at temperatures below 5.5 mK. The base temperature on-line is expected to be lower then 6 mK. The sample can be cooled down from room temperature to 10 mK within two hours, to 6 mK within 3 hours which is not only important for off-line but also for on-line experiments when samples have to be changed to remove long lived daughter activity. The latest results will be reported.
