    Notes: Evidence for the presence of the metal-binding protein metallothionein, MT, in higher plants is equivocal. Although a number of MT-like metal complexes have been isolated from plants, the chemical structures of most of these compounds have not been fully elucidated. Recently a novel class of plant peptides, poly (γ-glutamylcysteinyl) glycines, (γEC)nG, have been discovered. These peptides bind metal ions, and in the presence of such ions the amount of (γEC), G in plant cells increases. The presence of peptide bonds through the γ-carboxyl group of glutamate, rather than the α-carboxyl group, suggests that these peptides are not encoded by structural genes but are the products of biosynthetic pathways. Cells which are resistant to supra-optimal concentrations of certain metal ions over-produce (γEC)n G. (γEC)n G. may be functional analogues of MT. Whether or not some plants also produce MT is an important question which remains to be answered.

    Notes: Abstract Rats were trained on an FR10 schedule of food reinforcement to press one lever after pentylenetetrazol (PTZ), 20 mg/kg, IP, and an alternate lever after saline. After acute nicotine, 0.64 mg/kg, SC, 35% of the rats pressed the PTZ-lever. Diazepam, 5 mg/kg, IP, blocked the stimulus produced by PTZ, and mecamylamine, 5 mg/kg, IP, blocked the stimulus produced by nicotine. Training was then suspended and rats were treated with nicotine, at 8-h intervals, 0.64 mg/kg on the 1st day, and 1.25 mg/kg on subsequent days, for 21 days. To determine whether nicotine withdrawal substitutes for the stimulus produced by PTZ, rats were tested with saline at various times after chronic nicotine injections. Data from this part of the study were replicated in another group given nicotine for 15 days. Saline at 8 h after nicotine (five determinations each group) produced a small but stable degree of PTZ lever selection (35±4%). At 48 h after termination of nicotine treatment, the percentage of rats selecting the PTZ lever (50%) was greater than that in a control group tested after an equivalent period without training. The PTZ-like stimulus detected after chronic nicotine was not altered by mecamylamine, was additive with PTZ, and was blocked by diazepam. These data suggest that withdrawal from chronic nicotine produces a weak PTZ-like stimulus, which can be antagonized by an anxiolytic drug.

    Notes: Abstract A Cu-complex was isolated from the roots of copper-tolerant Mimulus guttatus. The elution volume of the complex determined by gel permeation chromatography was similar to that of rat-liver cadmium thionein. The complex was heat stable, had a relatively high ratio of absorbance at 254 nm: 280 nm and incorporated 35S. The complex, purified using a combination of gel permeation chromatography and anion-exchange chromatography, contained more glutamine/glutamic acid and glycine residues than mammalian metallothioneins. The amount of the complex in roots increased after 5 h growth in a solution containing 16 μM Cu. Induction was preceded by an increase in the concentrations in root tissue of unknown compounds containing sulphur which may serve as precursors. The availability of these compounds appeared to regulate the rate of synthesis of this Cu-complex.

    Notes: Abstract Apneic oxygenation was studied in six ponies for 30 minutes, and six horses for 10 minutes. Arterial blood was sampled at regular intervals for measurement of oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions (PaO2 and PaCO2) and calculation of alveolar-arterial oxygen tension difference (PAO2-PaO2). In both groups of animals, PaO2 decreased rapidly during the first 3 minutes of apnea, then more slowly. Although the mean value was above 100 mmHg at 10 minutes, there was considerable inter-animal variability. Before apnea, PAO2-PaO2 was slightly, but not significantly, larger in horses than in ponies and increased in both groups during the first 3 minutes of apnea, after which the increase was slower. There was no significant difference between ponies and horses up to 10 minutes, suggesting that PAO2-PaO2 is independent of body size. In ponies, the PAO2-PaO2 did not change significantly between 10 and 30 minutes. Final PaO2 could not be correlated with initial PaO2 or initial PAO2-PaO2. The rate of rise of PAO2-PaO2 could not be predicted from baseline values. The rate of rise of PaCO2 was similar and fairly constant in ponies and horses, and did not contribute to the rapid initial decrease in PaO2. It appears that apneic oxygenation should not be used in the equine species, since it is impossible to predict in which animals the technique is safe for more than a few minutes.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of lung inflation on thoracic radiographic anatomy was determined in seven anesthetized calves less than one week of age. Radiographs were taken with the calves in dorsoventral (DV), ventrodorsal (VD), left and right lateral recumbency at functional residual capacity (FRC), at half inflation of the lung and at total lung capacity (TLC). Lung volumes were maintained by positive pressure ventilation. Increases in areas and linear dimensions during lung inflation were not uniform, being greatest in the caudal and especially the caudal ventral regions of the thorax. With inflation, heart size decreased and the heart shadow moved cauded as the diaphragm flattened. When the calf was shifted from the DV to the VD position, the heart displaced toward the left thoracic wall. Lung areas were larger on VD than on DV projections with the right lung being larger than the left. On lateral radiographs the most reliable, easily observed indication of the stage of lung inflation was the area bounded by the vena cava, the caudal heart border and the diaphragm. On the DV or VD radiographs the transthoracic width at the diaphragm was the best indicator of the degree of lung inflation.
