Notes: In this paper the authors describe the construction and the operation of a scintillator hodoscope used in an intense beam. By using a fast scintillator (Pilot U), an XP1910 photomultiplier, and an appropriate electronic chain, a two-pulse separation of 6 ns per channel and a time resolution (σ) of 210 ps were obtained.

Notes: Summary Twenty-six workers in a hard metal manufacturing plant were monitored by cobalt urinary and ambient air measurements during the first month after summer holidays. Cobalt determinations were performed utilizing AAS, with a preliminary chelation and extraction procedure for urinary samples. Almost all personal ambient air samples turned out to be under the cobalt dust TLV of 0.1 mg/m3. When restarting work after the holidays, urinary values did not differ from the control group. At the end of the first working week, urinary cobalt had increased four fold, then decreased to the original values on the following Monday before restarting work. Thereafter, the weekend was no longer sufficient to reduce the levels to normal urinary cobalt values. The values rose to the same level observed before the holidays, and dit not substantially decrease even after the weekend. End-shift urinary cobalt values showed a good relationship with present as well as with mean past exposure on the first and the fifth weekday, but the third day did not. The correlation was better with present exposure on Monday and with mean past exposure on Friday. The observed differences may be explained by the minor influence of recent exposure on present exposure on Monday. The highest values were found on Wednesday. We suggest the utilization of end-shift urinary cobalt determination as a measure of the present exposure on Monday, and of mean recent or preceding exposure on Friday.

Notes: Abstract The results of an analysis of streamer chamber data from the NA5 experiment are presented. Topological cross sections forpp and $$\bar p$$ p interactions and strange neutral particle production at 200 GeV/c have been measured and ( $$\bar p$$ p−pp) difference cross sections have been determined. Multiplicity moments were calculated.

Notes: Corrosion of pasted and unpasted grids and of different lead alloys has been investigated by means of weight loss measurements and electrochemical tests. Pasted grids were analysed after several days immersion in sulphuric acid of different densities in the range 1.10-1.32 g cm-3. Some grids withdrawn from plates at various stages of manufacturing and from batteries stored for different times were also examined.Corrosion testing on lead-alloys sheet samples included cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, potentiostatic tests and photo-current measurements. The results evidenced the importance of the plates conversion process on subsequent corrosion of the grids. Antimonial grids appear to be more corrodible than lead-tin-calcium grids. Mechanical working greatly affects localized corrosion in the case of expanded grids. Corrodibility largely increases by decreasing the sulphuric acid density. Differences in the corrosion testing methods are discussed.

Notes: Abstract From 1979 to 1982, 1233 symptom-free subjects at high risk for colon cancer because of family history and/or personal history of bowel neoplasia (cancer or adenomatous polyp) were examined with a guaiac test (Hemoccult II) for occult blood in stools. The test was positive (H+) in 98 subjects (7.9%). Endoscopy was subsequently performed on 86% of the H+ and on 64% of the H-subjects. Of 20 in invasive cancers found, 15 had been H+ [75.0%; 95% confidence interval (CI), 54.3–91.0%]. Of 96 patients with adenoma(s), 23 were H+ (24%; 95% CI, 16.0–33.0%). However, the sensitivity for adenomas was higher in patients with multiple adenomas or with a single adenoma measuring 2 cm or more in its largest diameter (37.5%; 95% CI, 21.8–54.7%). Of 699 subjects free of neoplastic lesions at endoscopy, 47 had been H+, ie, false positive (6.7%; 95% CI, 5.0–8.7%). Adjusting for differential compliance of H+ and H-subjects to endoscopy, a corrected estimate for sensitivity would be 69% for cancer and 19% for adenomas; the corrected estimate for the false-positive rate would be 5%.
