Notes: Ru L2,3 edge XANES (x-ray absorption near edge structure) together with AES (Auger electron spectroscopy) and LEED (low energy electron diffraction) studies of Ru3(CO)12 adsorbed on Cu(111) reveal the following: (a) Ru3(CO)12 adsorbs molecularly on Cu(111) at low temperature ((approximately-less-than)−50°). (b) Upon electron bombardment, Ru3(CO)12 dissociates to form bare Ru aggregates which exhibit very broad Ru L2,3 white lines and featureless absorption in the XANES spectrum indicating that the Ru atoms are not well ordered on the Cu(111) surface. (c) Annealing of the bare Ru aggregates on Cu(111) at 450 °C results in the formation of Cu/Ru bimetallic clusters in which the Ru atoms are in the core and exhibit bulk-like Ru L2,3 XANES while the surface is covered with Cu atoms. Analysis of the Ru L3 white line intensity indicates that charge redistribution in the Ru d band occurs upon the transformation from the bare Ru aggregates to the bimetallic Cu/Ru clusters on Cu(111).

Notes: The design and performance of a compact, ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) compatible x-ray detector is described which can be applied to measurements of surface EXAFS spectra and x-ray standing wave (SW) profiles. The detector is a type of gas flow proportional counter. Its compactness allows us to save space around the sample. A 25-μm-thick beryllium window separates UHV (〈1×10−10 mbar) environment from atmospheric pressure and provides good efficiency to detect low energy x rays. Surface EXAFS spectra of less than 0.1 monolayer chlorine on a Ni substrate are successfully measured with high quality. Its high signal-to-background ratio allows us to measure SW profiles, which could hardly be obtained with any electron yield detection technique.

Notes: A crystal cooling system was designed and tested successfully for the soft x-ray double-crystal monochromator in an ultrahigh-vacuum environment at the Photon Factory. The temperature rise at the surface of the InSb first crystal is reduced to less than 45 °C at an average stored current of 200 mA. With the help of a control software, the output beam can be fixed in a position for a wide energy range. In this paper, the heating effect on the double-crystal monochromator, and the design and performance of a water cooling system are described.

Notes: Summary A finite element technique is used to obtain the natural frequencies and transient responses of Timoshenko beams resting on elastic foundations. The beam is discretized into beam elements, each with four degrees of freedom. The equations of motion in terms of the nodal degrees of freedom are derived by applying Hamilton's principle. The numerical results for a hinged-hinged beam are given to show the effects of rotatory inertia, shear deformation and foundation constants on the natural frequencies of the beam. The transient responses of beams are subsequently presented and compared with the available solutions.

Notes: Influence of preparation conditions on the electrical conductivity, dissipation factor, and hardness of silicone rubber vulcanized by the condensation reaction using dibutyltin dilaurate as catalyst was studied. Thickness of rubber specimens and amounts of catalyst added were varied. Electrical properties were measured at 20-200°C for rubber specimens heat-treated at 200°C for 10 h under various conditions, for example, heat treated in air, but in a sealed state in order to inhibit volatilizaions of the catalyst and vaporization of by-products, or heat treated in a dry nitrogen atmosphere, in order to avoid oxidation and hydrolysis of the catalyst. Furthermore, the catalysts and byproducts were volatilized in air from both surfaces of the specimen in order to accelerate volatilization. Degradation of silicon rubber with heat treatment was elucidated by hardness measurements and hardness dependence of the electrical conductivity of the specimens was analyzed.

Notes: Abstract A novel impact three-point bend test method has been developed for determining the dynamic fracture-initiation toughness,K Id, over the range of loading rates $$10^5 MPa\sqrt m /s \leqslant K_I \leqslant 10^5 MPa\sqrt m /s$$ . The split-Hopkinson pressure-bar technique is used to measure dynamic loads applied to a bend specimen with a fatigue precrack. The stress-intensity-factor histories for the bend specimen are evaluated by means of a dynamic finite-element technique and the standard formula (ASTM E 399-83) based on the measured dynamic loads. The time of crack initiation is determined using a strain gage mounted near a crack tip. The results for 7075-T6 aluminum alloy and Ti−6A1−2Sn−4Zr−6Mo alloy indicate that the reliableK Id data can only be obtained by evaluation procedures which take the inertial effects into account. It is shown that the novel impact bend test method in conjunction with dynamic finite-element analysis provides an effective means of characterizing the dynamic fracture-toughness parameterK Id.

Notes: The electrical conductivity and the dissipation factor of silicone rubber vulcanized by the condensation reaction of α,ω-dihydroxypolysiloxane with ethoxysilane, using dibutyltin dilaurate as a catalyst, were studied. Rubber specimens, with different amounts of catalyst, were prepared using various vulcanization times and then heat treated in dry or wet atmospheres containing oxygen and nitrogen. The electrical properties of these specimens were measured at 20 to 200°C in dry air. The amounts of residual catalysts and unreacted ethoxy groups were analyzed by colorimetric and gas chromatographic methods. Factors influencing the specimen electrical properties were discussed in terms of preparation conditions and amount of residual compounds.
