X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been used to study the chemical modification of low density polyethylene, high density polyethylene and polypropylene using a very mild treatment with chromic-sulphuric acid or treatment with concentrated sulphuric acid. The treatment of low density polyethylene with CrO3-water has been studied in detail by XPS and multiple internal reflection infrared spectroscopy. In all cases surface modification has been correlated with adhesion level to an epoxide adhesive. The XPS data are also used to discuss the adhesion of metals to CrO3-water etched polymers and the effect of surface contaminants on adhesion to epoxides.
