    Notes: Abstract. A new virus, provisionally named Herpesvirus vitreum, was isolated from hyperplastic epidermal tissue from a walleye, Stizostedion vitreum vitreum (Mitchill), taken in Saskatchewan, Canada. The virus, which was isolated in the walleye ovarian (WO) cell line, was identified as a herpesvirus on the basis of size (190–230 nm), morphology and apparent pattern of replication. The virus, which passes polycarbonate membranes of 200 nm mean pore diameter, was ether-labile. Virus replicated in WC-1 cells at 4 and 15°C, but not at 20°C. Although walleye cell lines (WO, WC-1, We-2) were susceptible to infection at 15°C, non-period cell lines were refractory. Syncytial formation and lysis occurred in susceptible cell lines. Virus was quantified by plaque assay at 13 to 15°C for two weeks. Replication was inhibited by 10-3.0m phosphonoacetate and by 10-5.0m 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BUDR), but addition of excess thymidine reversed the inhibition by BUDR. Viral replication in WO cells, but not in WC-1 cells, was inhibited by the antiherpetic drug acyclovir (10-5.0m). The relationship of the herpesvirus isolate and epithelial neoplasms was not determined.

    Notes: An approximate expression is given for describing Bloch-wave amplitudes of electrons which undergo multiple inelastic scattering in crystalline specimens. The expression is derived from differential equations of inelastic scattering given by Howie [Proc. R. Soc. London Ser. A (1963), 271, 268-287]. In the course of the derivation, the differential equations are reduced to a transport equation which has been applied to the analysis of multiple inelastic scattering in non-crystalline specimens. The identity between them is discussed, including the approximations employed. The expression was used to analyze Bloch-wave amplitudes of transmitted electrons at various thicknesses of copper and silicon crystals. It was found that the values of the amplitudes were sensitive to the shape of the interaction potential resulting from the excitation of core electrons. An accurate estimate of the potential will be required in future studies.

    Notes: Abstract The d. c. component of birefringence of aqueous carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) under an a. c. electric field was measured at frequencies ranging from 0.1 Hz to 100 kHz. Three samples of different molecular weights were studied with varying degree of neutralization, polymer concentration and added salt concentration. The dispersion curve of birefringence consists of three relaxation bands,A, B andC in order of decreasing frequency. RelaxationB with a negative relaxation strength is ascribed to end-over-end rotation of almost rodlike CMC molecules. RelaxationA with a positive strength is attributed to the relaxation of electrical polarizability along the minor axis of molecule. RelaxationC possesses also a positive strength and is induced by clusters of CMC molecules.

    Notes: Summary Single unit activities of the first-order taste neurons (chorda tympani), cortical field potentials and unit responses of cortical taste cells were recorded during anodal D. C. stimulation of the tongue surface in rats. This technique of anodal stimulation was found to be useful for accurate localization of the recording electrode in the cortical taste area, in order to record its unit activities. Salt- and/or cold-sensitive chorda tympani fibers were sensitive exclusively to anodal D.C. stimulation. The relationship between response magnitude and stimulus intensity corresponded approximately to Stevens' power function. In contrast to fibers in the chorda tympani, cortical cold-sensitive cells were less responsive to D.C. stimulation. Moreover, the dominant responsiveness of salt-sensitive cortical cells to D.C. stimulation of the tongue faded away within 1–5 s after onset of the stimulation.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Hier wird das Symm-Wilkinson-Verfahren diskutiert (ein sogenannter entspannender Algorithmus in [4]) zur Verbesserung eines approximativen einfachen Eigenwerts einern×n Matrix und seines zugehörigen approximativen Eigenvektors, die durch irgendein Verfahren erreicht werden. Das besagte Verfahren ist ein verallgemeinertes Newtonsches Verfahren, das auf ein nichtlineares Gleichungssystem angewandt wird, so daß unter gewöhnlichen Voraussetzungen der Prozeß linear konvergiert. Das Symm-Wilkinson-Verfahren braucht pro Schrittn−1 mehr Multiplikationen als das vereinfachte Newtonsche Verfahren, das auf dieselben Gleichungen angewandt wird. Es scheint also, daß aus der Verwendung jenes Verfahrens kein zusätzlicher Nutzen gezogen werden kann.
    Notes: Abstract Here is discussed the Symm-Wilkinson method (called a relaxed algorithm in [4]) for improving an approximate simple eigenvalue of ann×n matrix and a corresponding approximate eigenvector which were obtained by some method. It is shown that their method is a Newton-like method applied to a system of nonlinear equations so that the process converges linearly under the usual assumptions. The Symm-Wilkinson method needs more multiplications than the standard Newton-like method applied to the same equations byn−1 at each step. Therefore, there does not seem to be any great advantage in using the former in place of the latter.

    Notes: Summary The localization of serotonin(5HT)-containing subependymal cells was demonstrated by immunohistochemistry. The 5HT-containing subependymal cells were predominantly located in the paraventricular organ, while a small number of them were situated in the nucleus infundibularis dorsalis. The basal processes of these 5HT cells of the paraventricular organ appeared to have contact with the wall of blood vessels. The result was discussed in comparison with that obtained by the formaldehyde induced fluorescence (FIF) method.

    Notes: Summary Three different electrophoretic types (1-1, 2-1 and 2-2) of a human cellular polypeptide with molecular weight of 31000 have been identified by the analysis of PHA-stimulated peripheral blood lymphocyte proteins using high resolution two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Family and population studies indicate that the three phenotypes of the polypeptide are determined by two common alleles at a single autosomal locus. The 31k polypeptide appears to be present as a monomer in the cytosol in a wide range of different cell types, including permanent lymphoblastoid cell lines, fibroblasts and HeLa cells. In an individual with the 31k polypeptide type 2-2, the phenotypes of adenosine deaminase and uridine monophosphate kinase were both type 1. These data indicate that the 31K polypeptide is a new polymorphic protein encoded by a new autosomal locus. It is proposed that the polypeptide and its locus be temporarily designated cytosol 31k polypeptide (C31k polypeptide) and C31P, respectively. In a Japanese population, the gene frequencies of C31P 1 and C31P 2 were 0.940 and 0.060, respectively. The C31k polypeptide type 2-2 appears to be a molecular weight variant as well as a charge variant.
