Notes: Studies were conducted to characterize the water soluble cytotoxic substances elaborated in vitro by cultured human plaque. A complex bacterial plaque, derived from scrapings of whole human plaque, was cultured in a programmable culture apparatus. Exposure of tissue culture media to the cultured plaque rendered it toxic to mouse L929 fibroblasts. This toxic activity was not alleviated by addition of exogenous tissue culture nutrients, fractionated with a molecular weight of less than 1000 daltons and was heat stable. Water extracts of the cultured plaque contained similar low molecular weight toxic factors. In contrast, extracts prepared from vigorously disrupted plaque contained high molecular weight toxins which were in part sensitive to heat inactivation. These findings demonstrate that a heterogenous cultured plaque does elaborate water soluble toxins and that such factors represent only a fraction of the total complement of water soluble toxins contained within that plaque.

Notes: The long-term effects of chlorhexidine on plaque, gingivitis, sulcus depth, loss of attachment, and gingival recession in the beagle dog were evaluated in this study. Dogs treated thrice daily with 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate were found to have significantly less plaque, gingivitis, loss of attachment, and gingival recession than dogs treated similarly with water. The study demonstrates that chlorhexidine is effective in preventing the normal progression of periodontal disease in the beagle dog over a five-year period.

Notes: Summary Here we report the isolation of several new temperature-sensitive mutations which cause cells of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae to arrest in the G1 period of the cell cycle. Four different selection schemes were employed. The cell division cycle (cdc) mutations define five new complementation groups. At non-permissive temperatures, strains bearing these new cdc mutations arrested in G1 within one cell division cycle. By order-of-function mapping, cells of each population were found to be arrested at “start”, the regulatory point in the G1 period of yeast. Mutations were grouped into two categories by the abilities of mutant strains to continue extensive macromolecular synthesis and to conjugate with cells of the opposite mating type. For strains with mutations in one category, shift to the non-permissive temperature caused an abrupt decrease in the rates of labelling of protein and RNA, and rendered cells unable to mate efficiently. For strains with mutations in the second category, cells continued to grow and mating ability was not significantly impaired. Each selection scheme was also designed to isolate mutations which specifically affect the ability of cells to reinitiate the cell cycle from stationary phase. This was done to test the hypothesis that stationary phase cells are in a unique developmental state referred to as G0. No mutations specific for resumption of growth from stationary phase were isolated.

Notes: Summary The levels of thriiodothyronine and tetraiodothyronine were measured in blood and semen of normozoospermic, oligozoospermic, and azoospermic men, prior to, and following, treatment with thyroid extracts. The semen, hormones and sperm quality were not affected by treatment.

Notes: Abstract Hummingbird pollination is documented for a natural population ofStenorrhynchos lanceolatus Aublet. L. C. Rich. occurring in Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. At the study site the plants are pollinated byPhaethornis eurynome (Phaethorninae),Thalurania glaucopis (females only) andLeucochloris albicollis (Trochilinae). The plants offer nectar as a reward and the pollinaria become stuck to the surface of the hummingbird's bill while it is probing the flowers. The orchid population received a few (0–4) hummingbird visits per day, with about 83% of the flowers being pollinated. In spite of the low frequency of visits, the granular structure of the pollinarium plus the behaviour of the most frequent pollinators, which tend to visit all the fresh-looking flowers of each inflorescence, a very high fruiting success was promoted. Experimental evidence suggests that the pollinaria may remain up to 6.30 hours on the hummingbird's bill, enhancing the chances of cross-pollination and long-distance pollen flow.

Notes: Summary When shifted from 23°C to 36°C, cells of a non-temperature-sensitive strain of yeast arrest transiently in G1 before continuation of the cell division cycle. When shifted to 36°C, cells harboring a temperature-sensitive rna mutation behave similarly. Others have shown that temperature shift transiently decreases the rates of production and processing of ribosomal precursor RNA (rpreRNA). Production of rpreRNA is soon restored to normal levels in these strains, but normal processing of these rpreRNA transcripts is restored only in non-temperature-sensitive strains. Therefore these experiments serve to eliminate from cell cycle considerations the involvement of processing of rpreRNA, while maintaining the established correlation between cell cycle behavior and rpreRNA production.

Notes: Summary Pattern recognition methods as applied to multivariate investigations of multidimensional data sets permit the detection of complex connections between properties and the measured datas including the interaction of the variables. In this case, statistical methods like multidimensional variance and discriminance analysis are advantageous because of the possibility to weight the variables according to their influence on the classification. Application of multidimensional variance and discriminance analysis to a set of spectrographically determined concentrations of colouring elements in historical glass bead findings yields good classification results after eliminating univariate detectable outliers.

Description / Table of Contents: High Temperature Fatigue of the Precipitation Hardened Alloy AlCuMnZr (2219) - A Study of the MicrostructureThe creep resistant alloy AlCuMnZr (age-hardened) was subjected to simultaneous fatigue and annealing (at 300°C). This condition (high temperature fatigue) is often found under operational conditions, e.g. in cylinder heads. The material was then studied by means of mechanical testing (hardness measurements) and optical and electron microscopy. It is shown by microscopy that the microstructure is inhomogeneous: Band-like regions are formed in which the phase transformation Θ′ → Θ has occurred. Coarsening of the precipitates is somewhat accelerated in the matrix due to fatigue. The results will be discussed on grounds of the literature and the existing theories.
