    Notes: Ferromagnet-insulator-ferromagnet tunnel junctions with one NiMnSb electrode were studied to test the 100% conduction electron spin polarization predicted from band structure calculations performed on this compound. This phenomenon, known as half-metallic ferromagnetism (HMF), should result in significantly larger junction magnetoresistance (JMR) than in junctions using only conventional ferromagnetic materials such as Ni, Co, and Fe alloys which show JMR of up to 32%. Analysis by x-ray diffraction, Rutherford back scattering, SQUID, AFM, and STM confirm that the NiMnSb has the desired physical properties. A maximum JMR of 8.1% was observed in NiMnSb/Al2O3/Ni0.8Fe0.2 junctions at 77 K and 5.7% for NiMnSb/Al2O3/Co0.5Fe0.5. Maximum JMR for these two types of junctions at room temperature was 2.4% and 3.7%, respectively. The JMR observed is much lower than that expected for an HMF-I-FM junction. This could be due to scattering of the spins at the FM-I interfaces resulting from surface degradation of the NiMnSb, since the film growth requires deposition at elevated temperatures of 〉400 °C. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present a study of spin polarized tunneling in tunnel junctions in which one of the conducting layers is a half-metallic ferromagnet (HMF). HMF are unique in that the Fermi level of these materials intersect the majority spin electron band, while the minority band has an energy gap near the Fermi level. Hence, HMF simultaneously have both metallic and semiconducting characteristics, and theory predicts that the conduction electrons are 100% spin polarized. As a result, the magnetoresistance in magnetic multilayers or trilayer tunnel junctions is expected to be significantly higher than with conventional ferromagnetic materials. Two important parameters affecting the performance of these junctions are the smoothness of the HMF surface and its surface composition. Tunnel junctions consisting of a layer of NiMnSb, a barrier layer of Al2O3, and a layer of aluminum were prepared and studied for their tunneling properties. Surface analysis of HMF films was done using Auger depth profiling and AFM. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary Effects of the workpiece surface vibration on planing noise were investigated theoretically and experimentally. A method of calculating the sound pressure level generated by the workpiece surface vibration due to the impact of planing knives was developed. Sound pressure levels and sound spectra calculated using this method show good agreement with measured values.

The cutting tool and workpiece were electrically insulated so that there was no current flow.     Notes: Summary The band saw blade vibration under non-moving and moving conditions has been experimentally studied for band saw blades unfitted with saw tension and back crown, fitted only with saw tension, and only with back crown. The lateral natural frequency of a band saw blade was found to decrease by fitting saw tension in a saw blade, but there was little or no effect for blades having only back crown. The torsional natural frequency of a band saw blade increased by fitting saw tension in a saw blade, but again there was little or no effect of fitting back crown in a blade. The lateral natural frequency decreased by tilting the upper wheel for the band saw blades investigated. On the contrary, when the upper wheel was tilted the torsional natural frequency increased for an untensioned blade with no back crown, and blades fitted only with back crown, however, there was little or no effect for a band saw blade fitted only with tension. The lateral and torsional natural frequencies significantly affected the over all self-excited displacement vibration of band saw blades. However, the displacement vibration due to the frequency of the number of wheel rotation affected significantly the over all self-excited displacement vibration of a band saw blade fitted with excessive back crown.

    Notes: Summary We investigated the effect of GABA on the spontaneous efflux of 3H-acetylcholine (ACh) from the isolated guinea pig gallbladder loaded with 3H-choline. Application of GABA (10−5 M) caused a significant increase in the fractional rate of tritium efflux. This GABA-evoked efflux of ACh was inhibited by the perfusion of tetrodotoxin (10−6 M) and Ca-free medium. Nipecotic acid (10−4 M) did not affect the GABA-evoked release of ACh, indicating that ACh was not released by the entry of GABA into cholinergic nerve terminals. Bicuculline (10−6 M) and furosemide (10−6 M), the chloride ion channel blocker, inhibited the GABA-evoked ACh release. The application of muscimol (10−5 M), but not baclofen (10−5 M) also produced an increase in the fractional rate of ACh release. Thus, the GABA receptors involved in the increase of ACh release are bicuculline-sensitive. The GABA-evoked release of ACh was not altered by the perfusion with hexamethonium (10−5 M), thus indicating the presence of GABA receptors on the postganglionic cholinergic neurons. These findings suggest that bicuculline-sensitive GABA receptors probably coupled to a Cl− ionophore are present on postganglionic cholinergic neurons and are involved in the increase of ACh release in guinea pig gallbladder.
