    Notes: The low-temperature thermopower of two-dimensional electron gas has been calculated by using the expression obtained from the Boltzmann equation. The relevant scattering mechanisms are taken into account. It is found that the calculated thermopower increases almost linearly with temperature in the GaAs-AlGaAs and InGaAs-InP structures, but in all cases the results differ widely from the values given by the Mott formula and also from the experimental values. The results are not influenced by phonon scattering and are slightly affected if the impurity density is changed by the order of magnitude. For high-mobility samples, the experimental values are higher than the theoretical ones and it seems that phonon drag thermopower may account for the difference. For low-mobility samples, however, the experimental values are lower and in some cases decrease with temperature. The present model is then inadequate. Possible refinements of the theory are suggested.

    Notes: A scattering theory of one-dimensional electron gas formed in a narrow channel GaAs-AlGaAs high electron mobility transistor has been developed. The mobility values for the different scattering mechanisms have been computed and their variation with temperature has been presented. The various scattering processes include acoustic phonon scattering for both deformation potential and piezoelectric scattering mechanisms, impurity scattering, and surface roughness scattering at lower temperatures and polar optic phonon scattering at higher temperatures. The effect of dynamic screening has also been included. Finally, the temperature variation of thermopower for different 1D electron concentrations has been shown and attempts have been made to interpret the results obtained.

    Notes: Erythrocytes that exhibit the rare blood group p phenotype lack the P antigen (globotetraosylceramide) and the Pk antigen (globotriaosylceramide). This phenotype is inherited as an autosomal recessive condition and the red cells of heterozygous individuals, parents and children of p persons, are serologically normal but no chemical analyses of their red cells have been reported. We have studied an unusual family in which all five children exhibit the p phenotype. In addition to the abnormalities described previously, the erythrocytes of four siblings had twice the normal concentration of lactotriaoslyceramide and lactoneotetraosylceramide. These cells also contained 3-5 times as much sialosyllactoneotetraosylceramide and up to a two-fold increase in GM3 ganglioside. The glycolipids of the parents' erythrocytes were normal. Electrophoretic analysis of the glycoproteins of the proposita's erythrocytes revealed no abnormalities, but her erythrocyte membranes contained approximately 35% less galactosamine than normal red cells. This abnormality resulted from a marked decrease in galactosamine that was soluble in chloroformmethanol. The lipid-extracted residue, which contained the glycoproteins, had a normal galactosamine content.

    Notes: A healthy 22-year-old woman was noted to have erythrocytes of the Pk phenotype: a strong Pk antigen, no detectable P antigen and anti-P antibody in her serum. Her erythrocytes contained four to six times as much Pk glycolipid (globotriaosylceramide or CTH) and approximately half as much P glycolipid (globotertraosylceramide or globoside) as normal red cells. The structures of CTH and globoside were characterized by analysis of permethylated sugars and complement fixation in addition to chromaographic mobility and sugar composition. Inasmuch as the erythrocytes of two Pk individuals that were analysed previously (Marcus et al., 1976) contained no detectable globoside, these abnormalities appear o represent a new phenotype in the P blood group system.

    Notes: Abstract An ultrastructural analysis of three yeast rad 6-1/rad 6-1 diploids on sporulation medium for 0, 6, 10, and 24 h shows that arrest occurs at meiotic prophase. Two strains, CL 139 and PU 6, fail to complete chromosome synapsis based on the continued presence of single chromosomal cores in arrested nuclei. A clone derived from CL 139, however, showed complete pairing as evident from the presence of 17 synaptonemal complexes. All three strains underwent spindle pole body duplication but the poles failed to form a proper metaphase I spindle. A revertant Rad 6+ isolated from CL 139 showed normal chromosome behaviour and normal kinetic functions. It is concluded that the absence of meiotic recombination in some Rad 6− strains may result from asynapsis, but that in other strains (e.g., CL 139s) recombination fails in spite of complete synapsis. In all cases the lack of sporulation is adequately explained by failure of the kinetic apparatus to form a metaphase I spindle.

    Notes: Abstract Intellectual development, speech and school performance of preterm infants with birth weight appropriate for gestational age are reported in two separate investigations: a longitudinal study of 97 preterm children and 93 term children as a control group, and a cross-sectional study of 249 preterm children. Both preterm groups were regarded as high risk groups with respect to number of outborns, distribution of gestational age and perinatal risk factors. Intellectual outcome at 5 and 7 years of age in the majority of the preterm children was comparable to that of the term children. However, 8% of the preterm boys and 2% of the preterm girls achieved lower IQ scores than any of the term children. Between 15% and 17% of the preterm boys and 9%–12% of the preterm girls did not attend school at grade level, compared to 4% and 2% in the term group, respectively. Intellectual and neurological development and school performance were higher interrelated in the preterm than in the term children. Articulation defects, stuttering and dysgrammatism occurred more frequently in the preterm than in the term children and in boys more so than in girls.

Both preterm groups were regarded as high risk with respect to number of outborns, distribution of gestational age and perinatal risk factors. Neurological outcome at 5–6 years of age in the majority of the preterm children was comparable to that of the term children. However, 15% of boys and 9% of girls in the preterm group were diagnosed as having cerebral palsy. Mild diplegia was most frequently observed; 4% of the children were severely impaired. Fourteen percent of the preterm vs 2% of the term boys and 6–9% of the preterm vs none of the term girls received motor therapy during early school age. There was a small but consistent sex difference in neurological outcome in favour of the term and preterm girls. Effects of drop out rate and of incompleteness of ascertainment are reported in detail.

    Notes: Abstract The development of fine motor and adaptive skills during the first 2 years of life is reported in 97 highrisk preterm children and 94 healthy term children. Most stages of fine motor and adaptive development were found to occur at slightly later ages among preterm children. Neurological development was significantly correlated with fine motor and adaptive development in preterm children only. No significant influence of prenatal, perinatal and postnatal variables on fine motor and adaptive development was noted. No significant sex differences were observed in both the term and preterm group. The strongest predictors of later intellectual functioning were fine motor performance at 9 months and fine motor and adaptive skills at 18 to 24 months.

    Notes: Abstract Blocking queueing networks are of much interest in performance analysis due to their realistic modeling capability. One important feature of such networks is that they may have deadlocks which can occur if the node capacities are not sufficiently large. A necessary and sufficient condition for the node capacities is presented such that the network is deadlock free. An algorithm is given for buffer allocation in blocking queueing networks such that no deadlocks will occur assuming that the network has the special structure called cacti-graph. Additional algorithm which takes linear time in the number of nodes, is presented to find cycles in cacti networks.
