Notes: Summary Spontaneous mineralization observed in the thalamus, and meninges of the median longitudinal fissure, of several strains of mice was studied by light and electron microscopy. The mineralized deposits were closely associated with blood vessels, were periodic acid-Schiff positive, and contained variable amounts of calcium. The thalamic deposits were found to be in an extra-cellular location, and consisted of a randomly arranged mass of fine fibrils or spicules, with laminations of varying electron density in larger deposits. The deposits appeared to develop on the surface of subendothelial and medial, vascular basement membranes. Energy dispersive, X-ray microanalysis demonstrated the presence of both calcium and phosphorus in small and large deposits.

Notes: Summary A case of relapsing polychondritis (RPC) with strongly positive antibodies to both native and denatured type II collagen is reported. This is only the second report of the use of cyclosporin A in the treatment of RPC.

Notes: [Auszug] Women who carry mutations in the BRCA1 gene on chromosome 17q have an 85% lifetime risk of breast cancer, and a 60% risk of ovarian cancer. We have identified BRCA1 mutations in 12 of 30 (40%) Canadian families with breast and/or ovarian cancer, including six of the eight families (75%) that ...

Notes: Abstract A finite element based procedure for the solution of the compressible Euler equations on unstructured tetrahedral grids is described. The spatial discretisation is accomplished by means of an approximate variational formulatin, with the explicit addition of a matrix form of artificial viscosity. The solution is advanced in time by means of an explicit multi-stage time stepping procedure. The method is implemented in terms of an edge based representation for the tetrahedral grid. The solution procedure is accelerated by use of a fully unstructured multigrid algorithm. The approach is applied to the simulation of the flow past an installed aero-engine nacelle, at three different free stream conditions. Comparison is made between the numerical predictions and experimental pressure observations.

Notes: Summary The genetics of peroxidase and leucine-aminopeptidase isozymes was studied utilizing starch gel electrophoresis in the diploidsMedicago sativa L. (M. coerulea Less.) andM. falcata L. Three anodal and one cathodal sets of peroxidase isozymes identify four linked loci. In addition, two anodal sets of leucine-aminopeptidase isozymes identify two loci that may be linked. The allozymes at each of the loci segregated as expected for monomeric enzymes. However in several crosses there were deficiencies in the number of progeny in particular genotypic classes. This could result from the segregation of recessive deleterious genes linked to some of the allozyme alleles. This is the first report of multiple loci and multiple alleles determining isozymes inMedicago.

Notes: Summary We measured meteorological conditions and estimated the energy costs of thermoregulation for young and adult Adélie Penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) at a breeding colony near the Antarctic Peninsula. Air temperatures averaged 〈 5°C and strong winds were frequent. Operative temperatures (Te) for adults ranged from −8 to 28°C, averaging 5–6°C, for the period from courtship to fledging of chicks. The average energy cost of thermoregulation (Cth) for adult penguins was equivalent to 10–16% of basal metabolism. Cth comprised about 15% of the estimated daily energy budget (DEB) of incubating adults, but only about 1% of the DEB of adults feeding chicks. The Te's for chicks older than 14 days ranged from 0 to 31°C, averaging 8.0 C. The Cth for downy chicks ranged from about 31% of minimal metabolic rate (MMR) in 1 kg chicks to about 10% of MMR in 3 kg chicks. Between initial thermal independence (age 12–14 days) and the cessation of parental feeding (age 35–40 days), chicks use about 10–11% of assimilated energy for thermoregulation. Cth is equivalent to about 17% of the MMR of fledglings during their 2–3 week fast. We observed no indication of thermal stress (i.e., conditions in which birds cannot maintain stable Tb) in adults and no indication of cold stress in any age class. However, on clear, calm days when air temperature exceeds 7–10°C for several hours, downy chicks are vulnerable to lethal hyperthermia.

Notes: Abstract Twelve poor sleepers of mean age 52 years performed 2 h of laboratory tests three times on 1 day during each week of nightly intake of loprazolam 0.5 mg, loprazolam 1 mg, triazolam 0.5 mg, or continued placebos. Only in the mornings did loprazolam 1 mg cause impairment in manual dexterity and card-sorting, and triazolam 0.5 mg in manual dexterity. Using difference from baseline, withdrawal of either drug after 3 weeks was associated with poorer subjective quality of sleep than following continuing placebos. The rate of spontaneous complaints (including accidents) associated with the drugs was as informative as formal testing.

Notes: Summary Segregation ratios of allozymes in haploid female gametophytes obtained from viable seed were studied in a natural population of jack pine, Pinus banksiana. Stability of these ratios was assessed for three levels of the sexually reproductive crown as well as for four years of natural fertilization. Analyses of observed segregation ratios of four of five polymorphic isozyme loci showed good correspondence to the overall 1∶1 ratios expected for simple Mendelian inheritance. Allozymes of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase did not segregate in the expected 1∶1 ratio. In addition, there were significant deviations from the expected segregation ratio for all the loci at some sampling positions on individual trees. Heterogeneity of segregation among trees, strata and years could be the result of pollen pool heterogeneity, segregation distortion and/or recessive lethal and semi-lethal gene combinations resulting in early embryo abortion. These types of segregation deviations in viable seed can affect the estimation of allele frequencies from bulked samples of a small number of individuals, the inference of heterozygosity/homozygosity of parental trees, and estimates of selfing rates.
