    Notes: Summary Spontaneous diabetes mellitus has been studied inMystromys albicaudatus (South African hamster) at the University of Missouri, Columbia Medical Center since its original discovery here in 1969. Thus far, characteristics established as part of the diabetic syndrome in this species included hyperglycemia, glucosuria, ketonuria, polyuria, polyphagia and polydipsia with variations in age of onset, degree of severity, and rate of progression. In addition, decreased glucose tolerance has been demonstrated and statistical analyses of data collected indicated that diabetes mellitus inM. albicaudatus has a polygenic, nonsex-linked mode of inheritance. — Histologic findings involving the pancreas, kidneys, and liver were found to be positively correlated to diagnostic parameters as well as to their degree of severity and duration. Pancreatic lesions includedΒ-cell vacuolization, glycogen infiltration, nuclear pyknosis, margination of organelles, andΒ-cell death.

    Notes: Summary This study measured the velocity of fast orthograde axonal transport of incorporated 3H-proline in motoneurones of the sciatic nerve in control rats and in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes of 3 weeks duration. Sciatic nerve and abdominal cavity temperatures were monitored throughout the period of measurement of transport velocity, and the rats were warmed to minimise hypothermia at both sites. There was marked abdominal and sciatic nerve hypothermia immediately after operation, and this effect was more intense in diabetic rats than in control rats. In steady state, abdominal cavity temperature (mean±SEM) was 38.1±0.1 °C in both control and diabetic rats, and the sciatic nerve temperatures were 37.8±0.1 °C in controls and 37.1±0.3 °C in diabetic rats. The difference was not statistically significant. The velocities of orthograde axonal transport for the fastest molecules containing 3H-proline were 14.0±0.9 (SEM)mm/h for controls and 13.9±1.1 (SEM)mm/h for diabetic rats. Thus, no velocity difference was observed. The findings are discussed in relation to measurements of fast orthograde transport velocity in experimental diabetes in other studies. It is suggested that, where velocity deficits have been seen in diabetic rats, nerve hypothermia should be considered as a contributory factor.

    Notes: Summary Spontaneous mineralization observed in the thalamus, and meninges of the median longitudinal fissure, of several strains of mice was studied by light and electron microscopy. The mineralized deposits were closely associated with blood vessels, were periodic acid-Schiff positive, and contained variable amounts of calcium. The thalamic deposits were found to be in an extra-cellular location, and consisted of a randomly arranged mass of fine fibrils or spicules, with laminations of varying electron density in larger deposits. The deposits appeared to develop on the surface of subendothelial and medial, vascular basement membranes. Energy dispersive, X-ray microanalysis demonstrated the presence of both calcium and phosphorus in small and large deposits.

    Notes: Summary Two cases of Central neurocytoma arising in the lateral ventricles are presented. Both patients had well-circumscribed masses in the right lateral ventricle causing hydrocephalus. The tumors were composed of small round cells forming Homer Wright rosettes against a fine fibrillary background. In one patient surgical removal was complete and no recurrence has been noted approximately one year later. These tumors appear to be benign and complete surgical excision should be curative.

    Notes: We examined maturation of speech-sound-related indices of auditory event-related brain potentials (ERPs). ERPs were elicited by syllables and nonphonetic correlates in children and adults. Compared with syllables, nonphonetic stimuli elicited larger N1 and P2 in adults and P1 in children. Because the nonphonetics were more perceptually salient, this N1 effect was consistent with known N1 sensitivity to sound onset features. Based on stimulus dependence and independent component structure, children's P1 appeared to contain overlapping P2-like activity. In both subject groups, syllables elicited larger N2/N4 peaks. This might reflect sound content feature processing, more extensive for speech than nonspeech sounds. Therefore, sound detection mechanisms (N1, P2) still develop whereas sound content processing (N2, N4) is largely mature during mid-childhood; in children and adults, speech sounds are processed more extensively than nonspeech sounds 200–400 ms poststimulus.
