Notes: A 70-year-old male and a 46-year-old female, both living in Japan, were seen because of multiple erythematous papules and plaques on the trunk and extremities. The peripheral white blood cell counts were increased to 30000–80000/mm3. The majority of white cells had characteristic lobulated and deeply indented nuclei. The patients and most of their family members had anti-ATLV antibody. Using an OKT series of monoclonal antibodies the tumour cells were found to be T-cells. Trisomy 21 was detected in the first case and ATL virus proviral DNA in the second.

Notes: Abstract Matrix elements of the three-body Pauli potential are calculated in thenpα resonating group model. They are small (~1%) compared with matrix elements of the two-body subsystem potentials, provided that correct normalization of all relative motion solutions is induced by off-shell transformation of the effective (subsystem) hamiltonians.

Notes: Abstract The influence of hard core correlations on the effective interactions in theΛ-α andΛ-Λ-α systems is studied. It is found that the hard core correlations modify the shape of the effectiveΛ-α potential such that the minimum is no longer at the origin but at about 1.2 fm. Hard core correlations also give rise to an effective three-body force which decreases the binding energy of theΛ-Λ-α system by 0.5–0.7 MeV.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the glow discharge plasma of SiH4−NH3 mixture by CARS. The decomposition rate of NH3 is linearly dependent on SiH4 partial pressure but that of SiH4 is not affected by the mixing ratio.

Notes: Summary A case is described of paraneoplastic cortical cerebellar degeneration in a patient with a small cell carcinoma of the lung. Following therapy, clinical improvement of cerebellar ataxia had been observed. The most severe degeneration was found in the superior aspects of the vermis and in the anterior and simple lobes as well as in the inferior aspects of the hemisphere. In addition to this distribution of degenerative lesions, uneven loss of Purkinje cells was apparent. Such distribution patterns in this case were apparently compatible with those of alcoholic cortical cerebellar degeneration (ACD), although the lesions were less severe than in ACD. Furthermore, dendritic changes in the Purkinje cells including loss of the spiny branchlets, focal swelling of the dendrites, and disappearance of secondary and tertiary branches were remarkable. It is noteworthy that these cells showed various stages of degeneration before cell loss occurred. These data suggest that the degree of vulnerability varies among Purkinje cells, and that this could be related to the uneven loss of these cells. It is proposed that, although this case and cases of ACD have both similarities and differences in their neuropathological aspects, it is apparent that both conditions have some common morphopathogenetic factor.

Notes: Summary Fifty-six Japanese individuals from six pedigrees with familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (FAP), together with 2 individuals with symptomatic FAP from an unknown pedigree were analyzed, using the Southern blot procedures for the prealbumin gene structure. A human prealbumin cDNA was used as the probe. Altogether, these individuals included 20 with symptomatic FAP, 30 who were asymptomatic, and 8 disease-free spouses. Twenty individuals with symptomatic FAP were all heterozygous for the prealbumin genes, carrying one normal and one mutant gene. We confirmed the direct linkage between the mutant prealbumin gene and the Japanese type of FAP. Moreover, 10 of the 30 asymptomatic individuals from pedigrees with FAP were also heterozygous for the prealbumin gene. The number of asymptomatic individuals with the mutant prealbumin gene showed age-related decreases, and none was over 40 years. A linkage between the mutant prealbumin gene and serum levels of the prealbumin variant was also evident.

Notes: Summary An in vivo 5′-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdUrd) labeled DNA probe was used for in situ DNA-RNA hybridization. BrdUrd was incorporated into plasmid DNA by inoculating E. coli with Luria-Bertani (LB) culture medium containing 500 mg/L of BrdUrd. After purification of the plasmid DNA, specific probes of the defined DNA fragments, which contained the cloned insert and short stretches of the vector DNA, were generated by restriction endonuclease. The enzymatic digestion pattern of the BrdUrd-labeled plasmid DNA was the same as that of the non-labeled one. BrdUrd was incorporated in 15%–20% of the total DNA, that is, about 80% of the thymidine was replaced by BrdUrd. Picogram amounts of the BrdUrd-labeled DNA probe itself and the target DNA were detectable on nitrocellulose filters in dot-blot spot and hybridization experiments using a peroxidase/diaminobenzidine combination. The BrdUrd-labeled DNA probe was efficiently hybridized with both single stranded DNA on nitrocellulose filters and cellular mRNA in in situ hybridization experiments. Through the reaction with BrdUrd in single stranded tails, hybridized probes were clearly detectable with fluorescent microscopy using a FITC-conjugated monoclonal anti-BrdUrd antibody. The in vivo labeling method did not require nick translation steps or in vitro DNA polymerase reactions. Sensitive, stable and efficient DNA probes were easily obtainable with this method.
