    Notes: Summary The characteristic findings of metrizamide CT cisternography in two cases of epidermoid are reported. The main finding was a “cauliflower-like” appearance and was thought to be caused by the irregular interstices of epidermoids. Metrizamide CT cisternography may be helpful in making a diagnosis of an epidermoid.

    Notes: Summary Nineteen cases of malignant meningiomas-seven haemangiopericytic, two papillary and ten of the anaplastic type-were examined clinicopathologically. These were ten male and nine female patients and eleven of these received reoperation for recurrence. Tumours of the hemangiopericytic type had similar angiographic and macrooscopic features and malignant characteristics were found microscopically in some tumours. There were intratumoral cysts in both cases of the papillary type and these tumours had a high cellularity, an increased number of mitosis, haemorrhage and partially haemangiopericytic patterns. Six cases of the anaplastic type had changed from a benign type at recurrence and those tumours had variable features radiographically and macroscopically. Lack of typical arrangement, a large number of mitoses, increased cellularity, focal necrosis, brain infiltration, pleomorphism and anaplasia were found histologically. Four cases of the anaplastic type were diagnosed at the first operation and these tumours had apparently similar angiographic and macroscopic features, but with variable organoid structures and malignant forms, microscopically. Electron microscopic features are also described. In malignant meningiomas, the recurrence rate was high even in cases of total removal. The outcome for these patients was good in the papillary type, relatively good in the haemangiopericytic type and poor in the anaplastic type. From these results therapeutic indications are also suggested.

    Notes: Summary The three-dimensional distribution of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-like immunoreactive (VIPLI) structures in rat stomach and their origins were investigated using the indirect immunofluorescence method in whole mounted tissue. The present study demonstrates a very dense VIPLI fiber meshwork in the circular muscle layer, longitudinal muscle layer and myenteric plexus. In the muscle layers VIPLI immunoreactive fibers run parallel to the muscle. VIPLI fibers are distributed evenly throughout the entire stomach. We have also shown by experimental manipulations that the fibers in the stomach originate from VIPLI neurons in the myenteric plexus.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Des prélèvements obtenus à partir de genoux humains arthrosiques et de genoux de chien porteurs de lésions arthrosiques expérimentales ont permis l'étude de la charpente de collagène du cartilage articulaire et de l'os sous-chondral, par microscopie conventionnelle et par microscopie électronique. Dans les lésions dégénératives, les fibrilles de collagène du cartilage ont une orientation radiale, alors qu'elles sont habituellement groupées en faisceaux. En cas de lésions étendues, le cartilage présente souvent des clivages ou des fissures menant jusqu'aux couches calcifiées. Les fibrilles de collagène du cartilage arthrosique se fondent dans la plaque osseuse souschondrale, rendant la jonction ostéo-cartilagineuse irrégulière ou mal définie. L'orientation trabéculaire de l'os sous-chondral se modifie en fonction de l'altération du cartilage articulaire. Ces modifications réactionnelles montrent que, même au niveau ultrastructural, l'architecture de l'os sous-chondral reflète la dégénérescence cartilagineuse.
    Notes: Summary Specimens obtained from human osteoarthritic knee joints and dog knees with experimentally induced osteoarthritis were used to study the collagenous framework of articular cartilage and subchondral bone in relation to osteoarthritic changes using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Degenerative articular cartilage in osteoarthritic joints showed radial orientation of the collagen fibrils, which were usually discernible as fibrillar bundle formations. Cartilage with extensive lesions often showed cleavages or fissures down to the calcified layer. The cartilagenous collagen fibrils in osteoarthritic specimens merged into the subchondral bone plate making the tidemark and the osteochondral junction irregular or obscure. The trabecular orientation of subchondral bone changed with alteration in the articular cartilage and with reactive changes in the subchondral bone, showing the effect of cartilaginous degeneration on its ultrastructure.

    Notes: Abstract Two successive X-ray outbursts of the recurrent X-ray pulsar GX301-2 were observed in April and May, 1982 from Hakucho. Apart from general increase during flares lasting for several days, the X-ray intensity was highly variable on a time-scale of the order of an hour. The outstanding feature is that the amplitude of 700 s pulsation of GX301-2 changes rapidly in a very wide range. When the pulsation is distinct, the depth of modulation is as large as 60%; whereas, the pulse amplitude occasionally diminishes almost to an undetectable level so that the observed X-rays become unpulsed. Such drastic changes are found to occur at any intensity levels observed. In several cases of abrupt changes of pulse amplitude, the intensity at the pulse bottom remained essentially unchanged. These properties suggest a hypothesis that the X-ray emission from GX301-2 consists of a pulsating component with variable amplitude and a non-pulsating component of less variable intensity.
