    Notizen: Abstract Light ion induced alignment measurements ofL 3-subshell in heavy atoms are analyzed within the framework of the semiclassical theory of inner shell ionization. Coulomb deflection effects are exactly taken into account by hyperbolic classical orbits while the electron in the initial and final states is approximated by screened relativistic hydrogenic wave functions. Satisfactory agreement between experiments and theory is obtained for proton- and α-particle induced reactions within the whole region of bombarding energies.

    Notizen: Abstract Electron screening effects influence the classical trajectory of the projectile. The influence of this effect on inner shell ionization probabilities is studied. We compare calculations with straight lines trajectories to trajectories in a screened and in an unscreened Coulomb potential. Rather simple prescriptions are found which allow to take the screening effects into account using “modified Coulomb trajectories”. Their accuracy is investigated and demonstrated for a number of representative examples.

The results concerning the $e^+e^-$ production in peripheral highly relativistic heavy-ion collisions presented in a recent paper by Baltz et al. are rederived in a very straightforward manner. It is shown that the solution of the Dirac equation directly leads to the multiplicity, i.e. to the total number of electron–positron pairs produced by the electromagnetic field of the ions, whereas the calculation of the single pair production probability is much more involved. A critical observation concerns the unsolved problem of seemingly absent Coulomb corrections (Bethe–Maximon corrections) in pair production cross sections. It is shown that neither the inclusion of the vacuum–vacuum amplitude nor the correct interpretation of the solution of the Dirac equation concerning the pair multiplicity is able the explain (from a fundamental point of view) the absence of Coulomb corrections. Therefore the contradiction has to be accounted to the treatment of the high energy limit.

    Notizen: Abstract It has been observed that the separation between the absorption and the emission bands of a fluorescent dye is smaller in a rigid polymer matrix than in the liquid monomer. Low temperature measurements have been carried out in order to understand this phenomena. It has been found, that the molecular mobility of the matrix, in which the dye is dissolved, plays an important role. By doping the rigid matrix with molecules of high mobility, the separation between the absorption and emission bands can be increased. A nearly complete separation can be achieved by this doping method if the difference of the dipole moments in the ground and excited states of the dye molecules is very large. This allows, for example, to increase the brightness of the fluorescence-activated liquid-crystal display (FLAD) and the efficiency of solar collectors based on fluorescent dyes.

    Notizen: Summary The major parameters of the peroxide-metabolizing system were investigated in eight human colon carcinoma excisions and compared with apparently non-neoplastic colon tissue from the same patients. The mean malondialdehyde level as an index of lipid peroxidation was 147 pmol/mg protein in carcinoma compared to 40 pmol/mg in healthy tissue. The following relations of specific activities in carcinoma and healthy tissue were found: superoxide dismutase 3.9 μg/mg protein (carcinoma): 2.4 μg/mg (healthy), glutathione peroxidase 23 mU/mg:10 mU/mg; GSH-transferase 38 mU/mg:25 mU/mg; catalase 2.3 mK/mg:4.1 mK/mg. The mean selenium concentration in carcinoma was 36 ng/mg protein compared to 24 ng/mg. The difference between carcinoma and normal tissue showed an overall-significance of p〈0.002 for the whole set of data. No significant differences were found in GSH levels (12.6 nmol/mg protein in carcinoma: 9.4 nmol/mg in normal colon), GSSG levels (0.6 nmol/mg:0.7 nmol/mg) and in the protein content (70±23.5 mg/g wet tissue: 66±20 mg/g). It is concluded that the enhanced lipid peroxidation in tumor tissue may be due to peroxisomally generated H2O2 in conjunction with a lowered catalase activity.

We solve the coupled-channels equations for the excitation of the giant dipole resonance and the double giant dipole resonance. Taking Pb+Pb collisions as example, we study the resulting effect on the excitation amplitudes, and cross sections as a function of the width of the states and of the bombarding energy.

    Notizen: Abstract The isotope shift in electronic atoms is calculated in second order perturbation theory. We consider multipole ordersλ=0, 1 and 2 forZ=20–82 nuclei. To a good approximation it is directly proportional to the electron density at the nucleus. We study whether the polarization effect modifies the extraction ofδ〈r 2〉 values from isotope shifts measurements and find it to be small but not always negligible. Relative to the volume effect, the polarizability is of the same order of magnitude for electronic as well as muonic atoms.

    Notizen: The influence of the chemical structure, composition, and physical properties of polymers [polyacrylates and -methacrylates, poly(vinyl acetate), polystyrene, and polybutadiene] and plasticized polymers [poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene] on the Stokes shift of fluorescent dyes has been investigated. The results indicate that the structure and overall mobility of the polymer matrix as well as the nature of the dopant all together influence the separation of the absorption and emission band of a given fluorescent dye. In general, polar and highly flexible polymers favor the band separation. The effect of both polar and apolar dopants seems to be primarily a plasticization in case of polar polymers, whereas for apolar polymers the plasticizer effect can be neglected and the increased Stokes shift upon addition of polar dopants has to be attributed to particular dopant/dye interactions. These findings open some new routes to improve the efficiency of solar collectors based on fluorescent dyes.
